Richard Arthur Wollheim (1923–2003), a Fellow of the British Academy, was an advocate of pacifism. Born in London to Eric Wollheim and Constance Baker, he went to Westminster School as a King’s Scholar at the age of thirteen and was influenced by Aldous Huxley’s Encyclopaedia of Pacifism. After volunteering for service during World War II, he returned to Balliol College at the University of Oxford in 1945, obtaining two first class BA degrees, one in History in 1946, the other in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 1948. His first substantial piece of work, F. H. Bradley (1959), notable for the elegance and lucidity of its writing and its unrivalled mastery of Francis Herbert Bradley’s philosophy, was immediately recognised as the best book on its subject. Underlying his concern with social issues was one of the deepest commitments of Wollheim’s life, ‘devotion to the cause of socialism’, and it is in the final section of his Fabian Society pamphlet Socialism and Culture (1961) that his own conception of socialism becomes clear.

Sylvia Agnes Sophia Tait was born on 8 January 1917 in Tumen, Siberia, Russia. She was the daughter of James Wardropper, an agronomist and trader, working in Russia. It seems that James Wardropper worked there with his elder brother, Robert (Huntford 1997). The wife of James Wardropper, Ludmilla, was a Russian who had the rare distinction of graduating in mathematics from the University of Moscow in the time of the reign of the Tsar. James and Ludmilla Wardropper adopted a Russian girl, Pasha; she became part of the family and helped to look after Sylvia. During the revolution, in 1920 the whole family, including Pasha (but not including Robert) left Russia from Vladivostok for the UK, where James Wardropper eventually became a successful civil engineer. The fate of Robert Wardropper remains a mystery. The other Wardroppers first stayed in the UK in Ealing, London, where Sylvia attended the local secondary school, the Ealing County School for Girls. In her senior years there, she mainly studied languages, particularly German but also French and Latin. The Wardroppers had relatives in Germany and, before World War II, Sylvia spent some time in Germany, including Berlin, which improved her German. In addition, of course, at that time she spoke fairly fluent Russian with her mother and step-sister, Pasha. Sylvia had considerable trouble in establishing her citizenship because of her birthplace but eventually was officially declared British. Because of the nature of the father's history as a Scottish engineer in Russia and also the effects of the revolution, Sylvia never met her maternal grandparents and knew little about them.

African states and studies are in a profound period of revisionism as the ‘lost decade’ of the 1980s yields to the ‘adjustment reforms’ of the 1990s. The relative optimism and expansion of the initial years of independence have long since been superseded by pessimism and contraction as successive energy, drought, debt, and devaluation shocks have resulted in impoverishment and inequalities. The former has affected ‘vulnerable groups’ in particular – women, children, elderly and peripheral communities1 – while the latter has occurred both within and between states. A few classes and countries have thrived despite or because of the continental crisis – more bourgeois fractions and more informal sectors on the one hand and, on the other, Botswana, Mauritius, and Zimbabwe. Africa at the end of the 1990s will likely be more marginal, vulnerable, and unequal than ever, as indicated in the final section, hardly the revolutionary, nationalist scenario anticipated after World War II, but more realistic and realisable none the less.2

Judah Benzion Segal (1912–2003), a Fellow of the British Academy, had a long career as a teacher of Semitic languages at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University. Segal’s principal interest was in Aramaic and Syriac, in addition to Hebrew and the other main Semitic tongues. Before his teaching career, he was employed in the Sudan Civil Service and, during World War II, his service was frequently behind the enemy lines in North Africa. He was educated at Magdalen College School, University of Oxford, and at St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge. One of Segal’s other abiding interests concerned the Jews of Cochin whose history he published in 1993. But it will probably be in the area of Aramaic studies that Segal will be best remembered in the academic world.

This book examines the evolution of American universities during the years following World War II. Emphasizing the importance of change at the campus level, the book combines a general consideration of national trends with a close study of eight diverse universities in Massachusetts. The eight are Harvard, M.I.T., Tufts, Brandeis, Boston University, Boston College, Northeastern and the University of Massachusetts. Broad analytic chapters examine major developments like expansion, the rise of graduate education and research, the professionalization of the faculty, and the decline of general education. These chapters also review criticisms of academia that arose in the late 1960s and the fate of various reform proposals during the 1970s. Additional chapters focus on the eight campuses to illustrate the forces that drove different kinds of institutions--research universities, college-centered universities, urban private universities and public universities--in responding to the circumstances of the postwar years.

George Archibald Grant Mitchell, OBE, TD, MB, ChB, ChM, MSc, DSc, FRCS (1906–1993) was a professor of anatomy at the University of Manchester from 1946 to 1973. He is mainly remembered for his research in neuroanatomy, especially of the autonomic nervous system. He studied medicine at the Aberdeen University, and after qualifying in 1929 he held posts in surgery and anatomy and worked as a surgeon in the Highlands. In 1939, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was based in Egypt and the Middle East, where he carried out trials of sulphonamides and penicillin on wounded soldiers; in 1943, he returned to England as Adviser in Penicillin Therapy for 21 Army Group, preparing for the invasion of Europe.

Since the end of World War II the study of Southeast Asia has changed unrecognizably. The often bitter end of colonialism caused a sharp break with older scholarly traditions, and their tendency to see Southeast Asia as a receptacle for external influences—first Indian, Persian, Islamic or Chinese, later European. The greatest gain over the past forty years has probably been a much increased sensitivity to the cultural distinctiveness of Southeast Asia both as a whole and in its parts. If there has been a loss, on the other hand, it has been the failure of economic history to advance beyond the work of the generation of Furnivall, van Leur, Schrieke and Boeke. Perhaps because economic factors were difficult to disentangle from external factors they were seen by very few Southeast Asianists as the major challenge.

This paper explores the link between explicit Luxembourgish language policy and the actual practices as well as expressed attitudes of a group of speakers of Luxembourgish, with the aim of studying the role of World War II in the advancement of Luxembourgish as Luxembourg’s national language. The first two sections introduce the theoretical approach of the paper and provide an overview of the history and present situation of Luxembourg and Luxembourgish. The following two sections present the findings of a sociolinguistic study of language choice, language values and identities, and linguistic (in)security among a group of Luxembourgish letter-writers, as well as recent interview data provided by the sole surviving correspondent. The final section brings together these results and the claims made regarding the role of World War II in the changing status of Luxembourgish and points out the complexity of this discussion.

[Associated Students of the University of California] and its activities rests in their hands and they assume the responsibility of their new tasks with sincerity and confidence. —Blue and Gold, University of California, Berkeley, 1943During World War II, female students at the University of California, Berkeley—then the most populous undergraduate campus in American higher education—made significant advances in collegiate life. In growing numbers, women enrolled in male-dominated academic programs, including mathematics, chemistry, and engineering, as they prepared for home-front employment in fields traditionally closed to them. Women also effectively opposed gendered restrictions on extracurricular participation, filling for the first time such influential campus leadership positions as the presidency of Berkeley's student government and editorship of the university's student newspaper. Female students at Berkeley also furthered activist causes during the war years, with the University Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) serving as one of the most popular outlets for their political engagement. Historically rooted in a mission of Christian fellowship, by the 1940s the University YWCA held progressive positions on many of the nation's central social, political, and economic issues. Throughout the war years, women dedicated to promoting civil liberties, racial equality, and international understanding led the organization in its response to two of the most egregious civil rights violations in U.S. history: racial segregation and Japanese internment.
