Contemporary organizations face the challenge of growing and advancing in a complex and changing environment (Johannessen, Olaisen, & Olsen, 2001; Malhotra, 2000). In order to accomplish this objective, private organizations continuously innovate to attract customers (Johannessen et al.). Competition has been accelerated by information technology, which allows the appearance of new business models, introducing new competitors in the business arena (Rayport, 2001). Under these circumstances, it appears that innovation is one of the most valuable activities for any organization (Nonaka, 1996). Furthermore, the management of intangible assets such as knowledge is one of the critical factors to promote innovation and sustainable competitive advantage (Davenport, 2001; De Long & Fahey, 2000; Malhotra; Nonaka).

Innovation is considered the engine for firm growth. Especially innovations, through recombining seemingly unrelated knowledge streams, can have groundbreaking impact and lead to sustained competitive advantage. To generate such innovation, firms often need to go beyond their existing technological or geographical boundaries to identify and integrate novel knowledge elements. This article refers to firms' knowledge activities of drawing upon distant knowledge (i.e., knowledge from dissimilar technological domains or distant geographical regions) to create novel technological solutions, as innovation through boundary spanning. Aiming to investigate the roles of information technology (IT) in facilitating innovation through boundary spanning, we collected data from the pharmaceutical industry over a six-year period to test the research model. The data analysis results indicate that IT supports boundary-spanning activities in firm innovation and different IT-enabled knowledge capabilities affect boundary-spanning innovation differently.

Mastery of information technology is important for the banking industry has an oligopoly marketstructure, but does not guarantee a sustainable competitive advantage. To win the competition is not onlydetermined by the technologically and price (interest given), but also factors mastery of knowledge andinformation currently an issue that is very strategic. If a bank uses technology as an advantage its competitiveness, then the advantage will be temporary, because thetechnology has the properties easily imitated. However, if the advantages of information technology along withthe mastery of information and knowledge of quality management, the competitors require greater effort and along time to be able to imitate or duplicate the competitive advantage. Thus the competitive advantage thatwill last longer.Through literature study and analysis of secondary data obtained information that the national bankingmarket outlook is still widespread. In today’s competitive global economy, characterized by shorter product lifecycles, increased employee turnover and ubiquitous information technologies, an organization’s ability to manage knowledge may be the only remaining source of competitive advantage (Drucker, 1995, 1999; Kogut & Zander, 1992; Nonaka, 1994; Winter, 1987). Even though a number of researchers have outlined the importance of adopting knowledge management (KM) practices and many organizations have given lip service to the term, there is still some ambiguity concerning what KM actually is (Malhotra, 2000b), and little attention has been paid to factors that enable effective KM to occur (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995). This research uses technical and human-centric approaches combined with Holsapple and Joshi’s (1998, 2001) Kentucky Initiative to investigate KM within an information technology (IT) department. Based on our case study, modifications to Holsapple and Joshi’s architecture of a KM episode, a model of execution of knowledge manipulation activities and a model outlining factors enabling effective KM are proposed.

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the practical application of knowledge management as an aid to decision making by pharmaceutical firms which comprise an industry that seems very well suited for knowledge management investigation. Although researchers assert that knowledge management has moved beyond fad status to become mainstream, practitioners remain skeptical and express major concerns regarding the ambiguity surrounding the sub-discipline associated with the management of knowledge. The major players in the pharmaceutical industry have already implemented knowledge management systems and therefore may experience a competitive advantage over other pharmaceutical companies. No attempt will be made in this chapter to suggest how the lessons learned from the pharmaceutical industry can be generalized to other industries.

This chapter describes the roles of information technology (IT) and knowledge management (KM) in global tourism, thus explaining the theoretical and practical overviews of IT, KM, and global tourism; the significance of IT in global tourism; and the significance of KM in global tourism. The fulfillment of IT and KM is vital for modern organizations that seek to serve suppliers and customers, increase business performance, sustain competitiveness, and accomplish continuous success in global tourism. Therefore, it is necessary for modern organizations to promote their IT and KM applications and establish a strategic plan to regularly examine their advancements toward satisfying customer requirements. The chapter argues that applying IT and KM has the potential to increase organizational performance and gain sustainable competitive advantage in global tourism.

Today, advances in information technology have increased the importance of knowledge day by day. Possessing knowledge and managing knowledge effectively are very important for firms to gain competitive advantage in rapidly changing environment conditions. Knowledge management helps to a firm to achieve its organizational objectives by making the best use of knowledge. It includes many processes. Knowledge transfer as one of the important processes in knowledge management, is defined as the transfer or dissemination of knowledge from one individual, group or organization to another. Effective knowledge transfer has many benefits to the firms. It increases the benefits that firms gain from knowledge. This study examines 11 factors based on literature review. Determining the factors influencing knowledge transfer will lead to a better understanding of the process and these factors can be used in other researches.
