The Geoprocessing has been considered a fundamental tool in the definition of intervention policies and environmental management. This work presents a methodological guide of application of Geoprocessing technologies to characterize the environmental fragility of Arroio Cadena sub river basin, inserted in the municipality of Santa Maria, central region of Rio Grande do Sul state. We used the methodology proposed by Ross in (1994), which is based in the comprehension of the characteristics and the dynamics of the natural environment. To evaluate the fragility, it is established weights or grades to each situation that the variables can present. We used as indicators of the potential environmental fragility, the factors: declivity and soil type, and as indicators of emerging fragility, the factors: declivity, soil type and the use and occupation of the land. Among the uses of the basin, the areas of soil that is exposed and urbanization predominate. The basin has a weak potential fragility, with 52.9% in relation to the total area, and it is a consequence of the flat declivity aggregated in the soil type. It presents a strong emerging fragility, with 37.7% of the total area, due to the irregular occupations and the inadequate use of natural resources.

FLORISTIC AND STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF A FOREST FRAGMENT IN THE CENTRAL REGION OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL STATE ABSTRACT:The knowledge of the structure and composition of forest species together with the understanding of the formation of floristic groups is an important subsidy for the definition of conservation and restoration strategies. The present study analyzed the structure, diversity and floristic clusters of a forest fragment with a history of degradation, in the State Park Quarta Colônia, central region of Rio Grande do Sul. In 2012, tree individuals with CBH ≥ 15 cm were evaluated in 16 plots of 10x10 m. For analysis of the floristic structure density and frequency were calculated in absolute data, Shannon diversity (H ') and Pielou equability (J). The vegetation characterization was performed through the cluster analysis, using the Twinspan method. The fragment presented groups in the early and advanced stages of succession. Among the raised species Escallonia bifida was highlighted as an indicator in the formation of floristic groups of open areas. The high values of density and frequency of the species also characterize it as the most important in the horizontal structure of the forest fragment, demonstrating potential for use in restoration actions. Keywords: Floristic groups, Escallonia bifida, ecological succession. DOI:

A Triassic taphoflora identified in the Central Region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, represents an important biostratigraphic stage in the paleofloristic succession of the Paraná Basin. This megafloristic association is composed of compressed leaves, fronds and seeds of a “Dicroidium Flora” and shows a predominance of the Dicroidium genus, with several species, and other important taxa like Neocalamites sp, Cladophlebis sp, Tetraptilon aff, heteromerum, Ginkgoites Antarctica, Sphenobaiera sp, Podozamites sp, Nilssonia sp, Pteruchus sp and Carpolithus sp. Taking into account the stratigraphical distribution of different species of the Dicroidium genus, a biostratigraphic framework was established. The biostratigraphical position of this Triassic flora was established by comparison with Triassic floras from Argentina, South Africa and Australasia. Considering that the recognition of this Dicroidium Flora was based on limited outcrops belonging to one lithostratiphic level (Santa Maria Formation – Passo das Tropas Facies), it was impossible to establish a formal biostratigraphic zonation. Instead, at present time, an informal floristic interval, named “Dicroidium odontopteroides Flora” is proposed (Late Anisian to Late Ladinian, Middle Triassic).

The open pollination cultivars (VPA) of maize are an alternative of production for a small property, because it presents a good agronomic performance and low production cost, mainly due to the possibility of seed production with low cost. The objective of this research was to evaluate the agronomic performance and economic viability of open pollination cultivars of maize in a low-altitude site in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The experiment was conducted during the 2018/2019 crop season, in the experimental area of the Federal University of Santa Maria-UFSM, in the municipality of Santa Maria-RS. The open pollination maize cultivars (SCS 154 Fortuna, SCS 155 Catarina, and SCS 156 Colorado) were used. The experiment consisted of three treatments and four replicates and the experimental design used was that of complete blocks at random. The open pollination cultivars presented an adequate agronomic performance in a low-altitude region in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, associated with the economic viability of the crop in the central region of the state.

Throughout the development of the sciences and in search of an answer to disturbing questions, professionals from different areas of knowledge, mainly health, sought and seek alternatives to assist in the treatment of different diseases and limitations, which affects individuals, causing irreversible biopsychosocial damage. In this view, and in order to assist in the treatment, Equine Therapy has been discovered as a therapeutic resource, a therapeutic and educational method that uses the horse from an interdisciplinary approach between the areas of health and education. Thus, this study aims to analyze the Riding Therapy Centers of Santa Maria, in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, aiming to evaluate the services according to the ANDE-BRASIL norms in the biopsychosocial development of people with intellectual needs. For this, a survey was carried out with questionnaires and observations in three Riding Therapy centers in the city of Santa Maria - RS, between May and June 2019, realizing that riding therapy develops the inclusion and improves the practitioner's biopsychosocial aspects in a mediating and complementary way. treatment proposed by conventional medicine, since this therapy offers a variety of stimuli: visual, auditory, olfactory, tactile and kinesthetic. It is concluded, therefore, that hippotherapy, not only benefits people with intellectual needs, but several pathologies, being difficult to focus its benefits only in one pathology, since, it benefits the global development, both of the patient, and of the team involved, bringing a improvement for patient, family and community involved.

Abstract During the cold season, episodes of a windstorm known as Vento Norte (VNOR) are frequently observed in the city of Santa Maria, situated in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). The onset of this windstorm is characterized by strong gusts with northerly component which are accompanied by a sharp increase in temperature and abrupt drying. A methodology based on the observed behavior of the standard deviation of temperature during VNOR was successful in identifying the onset and demise of the windstorm. Additionally, the research shows the results of different micrometeorological variables during the event. Early morning and evening atmospheric profiles exhibit an elevated mixed layer over central RS in association with the strong VNOR winds, indicating the presence of mechanically-forced mixing during nighttime hours.

The effect of soil mulching with transparent, black, white, and co-extruded white-on-black polyethylene sheets on soil temperature and tomato yield was evaluated in the Subtropical Central Region of the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The experiment was carried out from August 21, 1994 to December 2, 1994 in a 10m x 25m nonheated plastic greenhouse located at the county of Santa Maria. Highest soil temperatures were obtained under transparent mulch. Maximum amplitude of soil temperature waves was smaller under opaque mulches. Tomato yield was not significantly affected by mulch treatments, however, a tendency of greater yield was observed for opaque mulches as compared to transparent mulch. Among opaque mulches, the highest yield was obtained from white mulches.

The area occupied by crops has expanded in recent years in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and the search for alternative winter crops to integrate the productive system is relevant given the idleness of the areas at this time and the lower risk of frost losses that occur in most grain-producing regions. In this sense, the objective of this research was to evaluate the agronomic performance of eight canola hybrids (Hyola 61, Hyola 50, Hyola 433, Hyola 571CL, Hyola 575CL, Diamond, ALHT B4, and ALHT M6), cultivated in low altitude areas, in the Central region of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). The experiment was conducted in 2017, in Santa Maria, RS, using a randomized block design with four replicates. Canola hybrids show variability regarding the morphological components and grain production. The environmental condition and low altitude of the region of Santa Maria do not compromise the productive potential of the canola crop, obtaining grain productivity superior to the state and national averages. Therefore, canola crop can be inserted in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul if adequate agronomic management is performed. The cultivars Hyola 50, Hyola 571CL, Hyola 433, Hyola 575CL, Diamond, and Hyola 61 present the highest grain productivity.
