FLORISTIC AND STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF A FOREST FRAGMENT IN THE CENTRAL REGION OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL STATE ABSTRACT:The knowledge of the structure and composition of forest species together with the understanding of the formation of floristic groups is an important subsidy for the definition of conservation and restoration strategies. The present study analyzed the structure, diversity and floristic clusters of a forest fragment with a history of degradation, in the State Park Quarta Colônia, central region of Rio Grande do Sul. In 2012, tree individuals with CBH ≥ 15 cm were evaluated in 16 plots of 10x10 m. For analysis of the floristic structure density and frequency were calculated in absolute data, Shannon diversity (H ') and Pielou equability (J). The vegetation characterization was performed through the cluster analysis, using the Twinspan method. The fragment presented groups in the early and advanced stages of succession. Among the raised species Escallonia bifida was highlighted as an indicator in the formation of floristic groups of open areas. The high values of density and frequency of the species also characterize it as the most important in the horizontal structure of the forest fragment, demonstrating potential for use in restoration actions. Keywords: Floristic groups, Escallonia bifida, ecological succession. DOI:

The Geoprocessing has been considered a fundamental tool in the definition of intervention policies and environmental management. This work presents a methodological guide of application of Geoprocessing technologies to characterize the environmental fragility of Arroio Cadena sub river basin, inserted in the municipality of Santa Maria, central region of Rio Grande do Sul state. We used the methodology proposed by Ross in (1994), which is based in the comprehension of the characteristics and the dynamics of the natural environment. To evaluate the fragility, it is established weights or grades to each situation that the variables can present. We used as indicators of the potential environmental fragility, the factors: declivity and soil type, and as indicators of emerging fragility, the factors: declivity, soil type and the use and occupation of the land. Among the uses of the basin, the areas of soil that is exposed and urbanization predominate. The basin has a weak potential fragility, with 52.9% in relation to the total area, and it is a consequence of the flat declivity aggregated in the soil type. It presents a strong emerging fragility, with 37.7% of the total area, due to the irregular occupations and the inadequate use of natural resources.

Family as patrimony: the building of memories among descendents of Italian immigrants Abstract The Italian settlement in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul state has began in 1877 and from then on a long trajectory of a construction of “italianity” has been processed. The revalorization of the notion of ethnic pertinence has allowed, among other things, new forms of sociability, exchanges and of insertion of individuals in the local society. In this reconstruction of origins, the family is the link that enables individuals to remake the collective history of their group, but also to meet themselves in this process. The construction of the descendents´ memories has developed a fundamental role in the search for origins searching and it was through these memories that this research was conducted.

Faunistic inventories regarding natural history of amphibians and reptiles are considered scarce and very little is known about their assemblages in urban areas; the Pampas morphoclimatic domain, also known as Uruguayan Savannah or Southern Grasslands, is also poorly known regarding their faunal composition.  Herein, we present a checklist of 16 amphibian and 20 reptile species recorded over a course of four years in the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciências e Tecnologia, Câmpus Pelotas-Visconde da Graça, in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We also present data on natural history and discuss conservation efforts to be undertaken in the area, in one of the least preserved and known Brazilian morphoclimatic domains, providing insights into urban herpetofaunal diversity patterns and showing the importance of modified areas in its conservation.

Abstract The goal of this study was to identify which bird species consume Solanum granuloso-leprosum fruits and disperse its seeds. 60 hours of focal observations were carried out between April and May 2006 on the edge of a deciduous forest fragment in the Uruguay River region, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Ten species were observed in total removing 443 fruits. Saltator similis removed 61.8% of the fruits, followed by Tangara sayaca (17.1%), Pipraeidea bonariensis (11.7%), and T. preciosa (6.8%), while the remaining six species accounted for only 2.5% of the fruits removed. Most fruit removal occurred early in the day or mid-afternoon. The most common feeding behaviors were picking (60.7%), followed by stalling (23%) and hovering (16%). Birds flew more than 10 m from the fruit plant in 62% of the removal events. All bird species observed here may be considered potential dispersers of S. granuloso-leprosum, as they moved the seeds away from the mother plant where strong competition and predation are likely to occur. Results also suggest that S. granuloso-leprosum may be useful in ecological restoration programs.

ABSTRACT: This article describes the clinical, pathological and epidemiological aspects of 17 outbreaks of bluetongue (BT) disease in sheep occurring between December 2014 and July 2015 in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul state (RS), southern Brazil. Affected farms were visited for clinical examination, necropsy, sample collection and epidemiological investigation. The outbreaks were seasonal and occurred during the summer and autumn. A total of 180 sheep (20.4%) out of 884 in 17 small herds were affected. All ages of Texel and mixed breed sheep were affected. However, lambs (younger than one year) had higher morbidity than adult sheep. The most frequent clinical signs were anorexia, lethargy, loss of body condition, facial swelling mainly involving the lips, and greenish seromucous or mucous nasal discharge. Pulmonary lesions characterized by edema were the most prevalent findings; however, erosive and ulcerative lesions in the upper gastrointestinal tract, as well as cardiac, skeletal muscle and esophageal striated muscle necrosis, and hemorrhage in the pulmonary artery were also frequent. The bluetongue virus (BTV) genome was detected by RT-PCR in blood and tissue samples (spleen and lungs) of 21 animals from 17 outbreaks. The virus involved in the outbreak 3 was subsequently isolated and shown to belong to serotype 17, for the first time reported in Brazil. In summary, our data support the BTV genotype 17 as the etiological agent of the outbreaks and indicate that the central region of RS is an area at risk for BT in sheep, a disease previously not recognized in the region.

In the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, the term cerrito was traditionally used to designate archaeological phenomena that emerge in the form of mounds in different landscapes. Except for recent research developed in the southwestern region of the Patos Lagoon, few advances have occurred since the 1980s in the study of cerritos in Brazil. This article presents an analysis of the lithic industries of sites with mounds in the southwestern region of the Patos Lagoon and in the central region in the current territory of Rio Grande do Sul. The results, along with other data from the sites, suggest that coastal sites were occupied by sedentary fisher-hunter-gatherers, who also possibly domesticated certain plants. Lithic material was scarce there and was mainly produced from pebbles and quartz cobbles using the anvil technique. In contrast, central region formations presented mounds on outcrops, using land, pebbles, and boulders; the area was occupied by a hunter-gatherer group that had projectile points and other instruments carved mainly by façonnage and débitage.

In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, there are few records of geographical distribution and host plants to species of Tomoplagia Coquillett, as well as other genera of Tephritidae, especially those associated with plants of the family Asteraceae. Here, we report the first occurrence of Tomoplagia rudolphi (Lutz & Lima, 1918) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, inducing stem galls in Vernonanthura tweediana (Baker) H. Rob. (Asteraceae, Vernonieae), whose plant becomes a new host record for this species. In this way, is increased to nine species of Tomoplagia recorded for Rio Grande do Sul. Biological and morphological data and photos of gall, larvae, pupae at new host and distribution map of the species in Brazil are provided.

ABSTRACT Objective: to evaluate the records of nursing in the perioperative period from a hospital in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Method: a quantitative approach, with a descriptive, conducted with 110 records from January and February 2010, through a form with closed questions. Approved by the Ethics Committee of the Methodist University IPA (346/2009) and the Institution search (357/CEM/09). Results: 65,4% of records had no nursing records. Only 7,3% of the medical records were analyzed on the history of the patient's health and on their physical assessment. At surgery, the patient's position was the most frequent item of complete records (13,6%), whereas postoperatively were vital signs (57,3%). Conclusion: there is a shortage of perioperative nursing records, which compromises the nursing process. It is suggested that the institutionalization of a single instrument that enables systematic records of perioperative, thereby stimulating a flow of information about the surgical procedure - an event vital to human life. Descriptors: perioperative care; operating room nursing; nursing records; postoperatively. A new species of freshwater anomuran, Aegla manuinflata n. sp. (Decapoda: Anomura: Aeglidae), is described from the Ibicuí River basin, a tributary of the Uruguay River, from the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It can be distinguished from its congeners based on both morphological and molecular (mitochondrial gene — COII) evidence. Morphologically, the new species partly resembles A. inermis and A. uruguayana, but differs in having an inflated cheliped propodus and more elongated dactyls, besides other features. Our molecular results showed a high degree of genetic divergence between A. manuinflata and its sister group (composed of A. singularis, A. uruguayana, A. rossiana and A. platensis), an indication of species distinctness within the Aeglidae.
