At a meeting held in the Naval Ship Engineering Center, Philadelphia Division, in January and February 1967, the following were found to be the principal reasons for the 1200-psi-boiler problems:Introduction of a new type of boiler without a sufficient training program;lack of a sufficient supply parts backup;lack of adequate manuals and documentation;lack of sufficient auxiliary equipment to assist in boiler operation and maintenance, and lack of optimum design features. This paper describes the aforementioned problems and what has been and is being done to improve conditions. An extensive program is now underway to vastly improve overall boiler reliability and decrease maintenance requirements.

The paper introduced the basic characteristics, maintenance requirements and backward cell processing method of Valve Regulated Lead Acid Battery (VRLA) based on the practice of substation communication, elaborated the charge-discharge test battery requirements. This paper discussed the test of battery operation and maintenance, charge and discharge risk. Through the test methods of battery communication charging and discharging and the steps of analysis, we find out the possible dangerous points in processing of charging and discharging, and at the same time, we list the typical examples on safety risk and carry on the analysis on accident cause to put forward the pre-control measures.

Shipyard training programs are varied in their methods and in the metrics they use to qualify welders, and welders are not always trained on each specific weld needed for today’s ship production (i.e., butt, fillet, lap, or a small precision one-pass weld) before going out into the field and performing them. As naval ship designs continue to incorporate a rising amount of thin steel, the demand for a standardized training program to address the requirements for welding this thinner material is increasingly apparent. In many programs, little attention is given to distortion control practices during fitting and welding processes on thin material. Working with shipyard instructors, a new program was implemented at Ingalls with the goal of training welders who are able to weld to design and capable of performing welding procedures needed for current modern lightweight ship production in order to reduce rework and downstream costs.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to extract the real requirements of the owner (or users) for the construction project in the operation and maintenance stage completely and accurately and carry out the construction based on the requirements, to make the project status and operation and maintenance requirements (RO&M) consistent after delivered.Design/methodology/approachThis study creatively proposes the operation and maintenance functions deployment (OMFD) under RO&M. In addition, the OPAR (naming is made up of the initials of owners, project, analysis and result) model is constructed to fully identify the requirements of both owners and projects. In this study, three typical construction projects are taken as examples to calculate the correlation strength between project characteristics (PC) and operation and maintenance requirements through the Apriori algorithm, and order parameters are obtained from the cost chain.FindingsThis study found that there are significant differences in the correlation strength between 11 types of RO&M and PC, in which the “cost of types” (TC) correlation of residential housing and factory buildings is the largest, while the largest correlation demand of commercial buildings is “safety of types” (TS) and “system” (S). Simultaneously, through the calculation of order parameters, the most influential factors on project characteristics are obtained.Practical implicationsThis study could effectively help the owner (or users) to check whether the delivered project fully satisfy their real requirements and also extract the key technical points to realize RO&M, which can guide the accurate construction of the same type of projects.Originality/valueThis research establishes OPAR model to accurately identify the requirements of the project in the operation and maintenance stage and establishes the association rules between the requirements and the construction scheme, which is helpful for the project to construct under the expected requirements.

Recently the difficulties arising from changes of our lifestyle and the curtailment of school hours in primary and secondary education constrict university students learning mechatronics engineering. For the purpose of improving such a serious situation, we propose a new type of hands-on training program for mechatronics education. The program consists of two parts; one is to develop the physical sense of mechanical hardware design and the problem solving ability, the other is to develop the creativity and the sense of system integration. In this paper we report the results of the program to freshmen, and verified the effectiveness by a questionnaire survey on the students.

Combination of gyro north-finder, self-collimation photoelectric theodolite can be composed a ground rapid directional aiming system. In the paper, based on the CCD angle measurement technology, the self-collimation optical system is redesigned, focal length of the optical system is calculated, and the appropriate parameters are chosen. Optical conjugate design of the three light paths of light source module, visual module, and CCD receiving module is adopted to synchronize the transmission beams of the three light paths. The simulation and optimum design of light paths in the optical system are achieved by using the ZEMAX software. By analyzing the spot diagram and modulation transfer function (MTF), appropriate structural parameters of the optical system suitable for aiming working conditions are obtained.
