Modeling of indicators for evaluation the sustainability of artisanal fishing in the surrounding of the National Forest Ibura, northeastern Brazil

Brazil is the holder of the greatest biodiversity on the planet, and can not shirk regarding the development of monitoring templates related to nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. In this sense, this research aimed to develop a model for evaluating indicators based on the methodology MESMIS (Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales incorporando Indicadores de Sustentabilidade) for use in its level of fishing communities or extractive related to protected areas, based on the existing community of fishermen in the surrounding National Forest Ibura, Brazil. The MESMIS the methodological basis was chosen for model development and evaluation indicators. Descriptive statistics analyzed censitariamente (N=100) with the minimum (MIN), medium (MED), desirable (P75), and maximum (MAX). The resulting model consists of 14 sustainability indicators that meet the attributes: (a) productivity, (b) stability, resilience and reliability, (c) adaptability, (d) equity, (e) self-management. It is possible to conclude that there is technical feasibility and to develop mathematical models of sustainability assessment systems based on indicators. When reviewed in complex revealed that artisanal fisheries developed in the analyzed system has a Relative Sustainability Index (IRS) of 26%. The results also demonstrated that it is possible to reach an IRS=33% based on the local situation (P75).

This study aimed to correlate sustainable development indicators with the occurrence of mosquitoes from the genus Aedes and phlebotominae sand flies, vectors of dengue fever, American visceral leishmaniasis and American tegumentary leishmaniasis, in order to establish a relationship between infestation indices and sustainability conditions in southern and northern neighborhoods of Natal, Brazil, adjacent to environmental protection zones 5 and 9, respectively. Data were obtained on Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus breeding sites and captures of phlebotominae sand flies of the genus Lutzomyia in the study area between 2006 and 2008, from the Center of Zoonosis Control of the Municipal Health Secretariat, and correlated with environmental and social indicators. Factorial analysis was applied to transform these indicators into a sustainability index for each neighborhood studied (Neighborhood Sustainability Index – NSI). Relating these indices with the occurrence of insect vectors at these sites shows a high positive correlation between SID and the Breteau index of A. aegypti (p=0.028) and with the index of household infestation by phlebotominae sand flies (p=0.01). This reveals a pattern allowing the association of sustainability conditions in the study areas with the occurrence of these insects. Analyses demonstrate the occurrence of a larger number of A. aegypti breeding sites and higher indices of household infestation by phlebotominae sand flies in neighborhoods with lower sustainability indices. Knowledge of the relationship between sustainable development indicators and the occurrence of zoonotic vectors may contribute to public health programs as well as to a restructuring of public policies in the study areas.

Zusammenfassung Die Nachhaltigkeit von Bauunternehmen wird bei der Gebäudezertifizierung und bei der Vergabe von Bauleistungen derzeit nicht berücksichtigt. Ein bauspezifisches Modell zur Bewertung unternehmerischer Nachhaltigkeitsaspekte existiert bisher nicht. Forschungsansätze der Bau- und Immobilienwirtschaft sowie bestehende Modelle anderer Wirtschaftszweige, wie beispielsweise der Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), können nur sehr eingeschränkt für die Bewertung von Bauunternehmen herangezogen werden, da diese mehrheitlich auf die Evaluation kapitalmarktorientierter Großunternehmen abzielen und die Besonderheiten der Bauproduktion sowie die vergaberechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen der VOB/A zumeist unberücksichtigt bleiben. In diesem Beitrag werden die wesentlichen Ergebnisse eines am Lehrstuhl Immobilienwirtschaft und Bauorganisation der TU Dortmund durchgeführten Dissertationsvorhabens zur Entwicklung eines Modells für die Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung von Bauunternehmen dargestellt. Zunächst werden die wesentlichen bauspezifischen Anforderungen zur Bewertung der unternehmerischen Nachhaltigkeit von Bauunternehmen erläutert. Anschließend werden die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung bestehender Forschungs- und Bewertungsansätze aus der Bau- und Immobilienwirtschaft sowie der stationären Industrie aufgezeigt. Abschließend werden die wesentlichen Bestandteile des neu entwickelten Modells zur Bewertung der Nachhaltigkeit von Bauunternehmen dargestellt. Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf der entwickelten Bewertungsmethodik und dem bauspezifischen Kriterienkatalog.

PurposeThe purpose of this research is to focus on the evaluation of heritage buildings' sustainability. BIM modeling was necessary for the design of the sustainability assessment model for Heritage Buildings (SAHB). Using ArchiCAD®, energy simulations were performed for two case studies (Murabba Palace, Saudi Arabia, and Grey Nuns Building, Canada), and the developed model was validated through sensitivity analysis.Design/methodology/approachHeritage buildings (HBs) are unique and must be preserved for future generations. This article focuses on a sustainability assessment model and rating scale for heritage buildings in light of the need for their conservation. Regional variations were considered in the model development to identify critical attributes whose corresponding weights were then determined by fuzzy logic. Data was collected via questionnaires completed by Saudi Arabian and Canadian experts, and Fuzzy TOPSIS was also applied to eliminate the uncertainties present when human opinions are involved.FindingsResults showed that regional variations were sufficiently addressed through the multi-level weight consideration in the proposed model. Comparing the nine identified factors that affect the sustainability of HBs, energy and indoor environmental quality were of equal weight in both case studies.Originality/valueThis study will be helpful for the design of a globally applicable sustainability assessment model for HBs. It will also enable decision-makers to prepare maintenance plans for HBs.

Restinga forests are plant formations that occur on plains of quaternary sandy deposits along the Brazilian coast. Despite historical reduction of the Restinga forests, little effort has been made to know the butterfly fauna of these areas. This paper is an important contribution to the butterfly’s knowledge, being the second inventory in the Restinga forest of northeastern Brazil. The survey was conducted in the Restinga de Cabedelo National Forest (FLONA de Cabedelo, following the Portuguese abbreviation) and aimed to provide preliminary information on the butterflies richness in this region. A total of 89 butterfly species and 1,503 individuals were recorded at FLONA de Cabedelo. Hesperiidae was the richest family (34 species), followed by Nymphalidae (33) Pieridae (eight), Lycaenidae (seven), Riodinidae (five), and Papilionidae (two). In general, the butterfly fauna of the FLONA de Cabedelo is dominated by species widely distributed and commonly found in open or forested areas in Brazil. Five species are new records in Paraíba state: Calydna sturnula (Geyer), Theope foliorum (Bates), Cogia hassan (Butler), Vehilius inca (Scudder), and Chiothion asychis (Stoll). We suggest carrying out monthly samplings which will certainly increase the list of species herein presented.

Enabling sustainable growth is highly dependent on the ability of private capital to invest in projects capable of achieving sustainability objectives divided into the three economic, environmental and social components. The international financial system has defined criteria for assessing the sustainability of investments, also applicable in the construction sector. Still, these criteria do not always appear integrated with the sustainability assessment systems developed by the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) industry. This article proposes reflections on the relationships between the sustainability indicators of sustainable finance and those typically used in the AEC industry with the purpose of identifying possible impacts on the disciplines involved in the design process.

Abstract Water is an important limiting factor in the ecology of many animals, and even in rainforests, arboreal mammals, such as sloths, may have limited access to water sources. Here, we describe the spontaneous ingestion of water by a free-ranging three-toed sloth (Bradypus torquatus). The event occurred in the Ibura National Forest, in northeastern Brazil, where a sub-adult B. torquatus was monitored over three days in January, 2014. On the third day, the sloth was feeding on mature leaves and, at 16:22 h, it began raining heavily. Once the rain ceased, the sloth began to ingest the rainwater trickling down a vertical branch by licking it, and continued to ingest water for approximately 26 minutes. This behaviour indicates that the water was a valuable resource for this sloth, and sheds new light on the previous assumptions that these animals are able to satisfy their water requirements through their diet alone. This observation, together with an overview of the data on the ingestion of water by arboreal mammalian folivores, indicates that the direct ingestion of water may depend on specific local conditions, in particular, the availability of water sources, as well as the specific necessities of the mammal. As the lack of previous records of this behaviour in sloths is likely due to the cryptic behaviour of these animals, this finding highlights the importance of continuous, long-term behavioural monitoring for a more complete understanding of sloth ecology.

The aim of this study was to identify prevalence and factors associated with violent behavior among adolescents in Aracaju and Metropolitan region. The study included 2207 adolescents (16.03 ± 1.08 years old) enrolled in high schools of the State Public Network. Violent behavior was identified from question 14 of the YRBS-2007 questionnaire with responses categorized as “never” and “one or more times.” Higher prevalence in males in relation to risk factors for adoption of violent behavior was found: cigarette consumption (7.3%), alcohol consumption (39.1%), and marijuana use (3.4%). Data analysis used descriptive statistics and logistic regression with hierarchical model at two levels: (a) sociodemographic variables and (b) behavioral variables. For both sexes, association between violent behavior and cigarette smoking (OR = 3.77, CI 95% = 2.06–6.92 and OR = 1.99, CI 95% = 1.04 to 3.81, male and female, resp.) and alcohol consumption (OR = 3.38, CI 95% = 2.22 to 5.16 and OR = 1.83, CI 95% = 1.28 to 2.63, male and female, resp.) was verified. It was concluded that violent behavior is associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes among adolescents.
