A Sociological Investigation of Governance through a Mandatory Learning Management System and Practice in Danish Primary and Lower Secondary Schools

Overall, the results of the studies in this dissertation show that political steering through the implementation of the LMS in real-world settings is challenging. First, the conflict and struggles reported in article 1 demonstrates a context characterized by mistrust between policymakers and teachers. This conflict and mistrust frame the context for the other three articles. Second, practitioners perceive the LMS and embedded governance differently. Although principals’ have a teachers’ habitus and thus mixed emotions regarding the conflict and mistrust by teachers, they act like an policymakers auxiliary arm and implement the LMS as expected and thus, in reality, support the embedded governance. Teachers are highly motivated to teach and report a high degree of wellbeing, despite the governance embedded in the LMS. To stay motivated in a context they believe opposes doing excellent teaching; they neither work around the LMS nor stay close to management to be part of management decisions. Third, if teachers are to use the platform, it requires an involving management that closely follows the implementation of the platform. The probability that teachers’ sense-make the platform is also increased by the fact that the management is close to teachers’ practice.

The present paper aims to investigate EFL instructors’ perceptions of Blackboard learning management system (LMS) at Taif University in Saudi Arabia. To achieve this purposes, the researcher attempted to answer two questions. The first question investigates EFL instructors’ perceptions of Blackboard LMS. The second question aims to identify instructors’ suggestions to overcome difficulties encountered while using the system. A questionnaire of 4- Likert Scale was used to gather data from one hundred and two instructors to answer the first question, and content analysis was used to answer the second question. The collected data were analyzed in the form of descriptive statistics. The results, on one hand, revealed that 75% of the instructors have not used Blackboard technology before coming to university, which would affect their perceptions of the system. It was also evident that most of the instructors believe that the different features of Blackboard LMS are either poor or very poor. In addition, the instructors, in most of their responses to the functionalities of using the Blackboard LMS, rarely or never used the system. On the other hand, the results revealed that the instructors have a positive attitude towards the system in terms of its impact on learning, which can be the starting point to help them be familiarized more with the system’s features and functionalities through professional development. Based on the results, the researcher presented a number of conclusions and recommendations.

The article offers a scenario approach to the design of learning management system (LMS) structure. It is argued that the LMS structure and it functional components depend on the scenarios of its use in educational process which, in turn, are determined by the type of subject that is based on the main component of education content. There are three categories of the LMS users in the educational process in university: students, teachers, and administrators, and their roles differ from each other. The article provides detailed scenarios of how the LMS is used by various categories of users and describes the structure of the LMS in relation to these scenarios. On the one hand, the LMS represents a structured base of content: that is, it contains theoretical materials as well as tasks and exercises along with certain scales that reflect their difficulty. The weight of these tasks, initially determined by experts, can then be automatically corrected using the methods of mathematical statistics. On the other hand, implementing the described scenarios requires an electronic operating cover of the LMS, among the functions of which is the organization of control and self-checking, as well as providing storage and processing statistics of the LMS use. These statistics should then be automatically turned into the current rating of users which is important for knowledge evaluation and support of learning motivation in students during a semester.

This literature review aimed to describe the opportunities and challenges of integrating the Learning Management System (LMS) in mathematics learning, especially in terms of the non-technical aspects. Because many LMS platforms which can be integrated into learning process, this review only discusses the three LMS platforms which are common, namely Moodle, Edmodo, and Schoology. This review was conducted with the method as proposed by Templier and Paré (2015), in which the literature materials consisted of journal articles, proceedings, and official websites of LMS. The results of this review showed that integrating the LMS in mathematics learning indicated opportunities in terms of the positive impact which can be obtained from integrating the LMS. On the other hand, the identified challenges were about how mathematics content or materials were organized through integrating the LMS, providing feedback, and maximizing the online discussion facility provided by LMS. Therefore, to obtain the positive impact from integrating the LMS into mathematics learning, teachers should pay attention to these three challenges.

The level of using conceptual and operational knowledge is of great importance in the problem-solving process. The previous studies on the measurement of conceptual and operational knowledge, have been, especially examining the problem solutions or in discussing the views. On the other hand, rich learning environments should be established to overcome such difficulties in teaching mathematics in general and analytical geometry in particular. In this study, the researchers provide useful information to the literature since this study aimed to examine quantitatively, whether the peer instruction in analytic geometry has any effect on the conceptual and operational approaches of secondary school mathematics teacher candidates in problem solving. The sample of the research is composed of (including 22 females, and 1 males) secondary school mathematics teacher candidates. Considering the advantages of technological resources on learning, the learning management system (LMS) designed by the second author, was used during the question-answer process. Before the application, the course content was integrated into the online learning management system (LMS). The teacher candidates were divided into groups before the application. In this research, the first group will be presented in the context of the research problem. In the first group, the scores of the prospective teachers who wanted to use the second right to answer were not reduced. Conceptual & Operational Approach towards Problem-Solving scale, developed by Özyıldırım Gümüş and Umay (2018) was used as the data collection tool. One of the two options is conceptual and the other one is the operational. Thus, it is possible to decide on approaches from the responses. Since the value of this approach could be related with the data set, the cut-off point was determined by the ROC curve method in SPSS program and the data were analyzed descriptively by the reference to this cut-off point. It has been determined that the secondary school mathematics teacher candidates display a conceptual knowledge-based approach through peer instruction.
