Grundtvigs View of the Growth of Man: From the Beginning of Human Life to its Perfectionby Lise Brandt FibigerGrundtvig never discusses growth in the sense of bodily growth only or Christian growth only. On the contrary, he always speak of the growth of natural man and of the growth of natural and recreated man, in the sense that natural man is the person who has within him a living faith in God as the Creator, and who enjoys a childlike trust in God. Man is not natural unless he acknowledges his creation. Natural man grows in body and soul, and the natural human life is the absolute prior condition for re-creation to occur. Re-creation takes place in baptism, where man receives Jesus as his brother, and the child’s condition in his relationship with God. The natural man does not lose his significance, for the baptized man is natural and re-created, and growth now occurs according to the same order of things. By insisting that the natural and the re-created human life are a unity Grundtvig avoids a «oiritualization of the Christian life. Growth takes place here and now, in and thiough natural human life. When the child is baptized and has assumed the child’s conditions and Jesus as his brother, God’s Word and Spirit can take root in his heart. As the creative word and spirit God’s Word and Spirit have been in the heart before baptism - now this creative word and spirit are united with the redeeming Word and Spirit. So it is not a new Word and a new Spirit that has entered into existence, but rather a development of them. From the Word and the Spirit in the heart grow faith, hope and love. This traid also belonged to the natural human life; this triad is also developed; and it is with this triad that man grows. But growth does not come of its own accord. Just as man in the natural life must have nourishment in order to grow, so must the natural and re-created man be nourished, and thus whoever is baptized must come to Holy Communion and there get the nourishment to continue his growth. Nourishment is necessary because only through the church service does growth continue unhampered. In life there are still obstacles; man loses faith in his creation and re-creation. If growth is not to stop completely, whoever is baptized must join in the service, where he is able to grow again and where he is nourished and strengthened. Growth cannot be spiritualized, for it is not a Sundays-only growth but an everyday growth. It is not a growth away from the world but a growth in the world in which God’s Kingdom is reflected.

The demons of racism, bigotry, and prejudice found in society at large are also found in the Christian Church. Despite the very nature of Christianity that calls on Christians to be a counter voice in the world against evil, many have capitulated to various strains of racism. Some Christian denominations have begun to explore racism in the Church and have developed responses to addressing the issues in both the Church and the world. This article examines the historical context of race and religion in the Christian Church, and addresses the current efforts of some Christian denominations to become proactive in the struggle against racism. Jesus, in His Word, calls believers to pursue peace and oneness. The paper holds that racial harmony and racial unity are possible, but there are many false, old and d beliefs that will have to be crushed under the hammer of God's Word in order to get to a place of real peace.

One of the major theological questions confronting the post-Nostra Aetate Church is how to relate the Christian conviction in the universal saving significance of Jesus Christ with the affirmation of the permanence of Israel’s covenanting with God. The meanings of covenant, salvation, and the Christ-event are all topics that must be considered. This paper proposes that covenant, understood in a theological and relational sense as a human sharing in God’s life, provides a useful Christological and soteriological perspective. Jesus, faithful son of Israel and Son of God, is presented as covenantally unifying in himself the sharing-in-life between God and Israel and also the essential relationality of God. The Triune God’s covenanting with Israel and the Church is seen as drawing humanity into an ever-deepening relationship with God through the Logos and in the Spirit, with both Israel and the Church having distinct duties in this relational process before God and the world.

This article addresses the problem of corruption in Christian ethics based on the reference of God's word. Christians involved in corruption show that carrying out governmental duties is outside the control of God's word. To examine this topic more deeply, the author uses descriptive methods and literature studies. The results and conclusions of this study show that the corruptors prioritize the works of the flesh, worship material things, give in to worldly temptations, violate Christian morality, and do not glorify God in their lives. Those corrupt Christian bureaucrats who are dominated by greed and greed are not the characters expected by God, and by doing so, they lose the opportunity to be witnesses of Christ in the world. Corruption is bad behavior, so there is an opportunity for the church to pay attention to anti-corruption education for the congregation so that those who sit in government can carry out their duties and responsibilities by the demands of the Christian faith.

The Church in carrying out its mission must present the sign of Shalom to mankind. In carrying out its vocation, the church must interact with all aspects of human life, namely social economy, culture, politics and so on; so that the role of the Church can be seen and impacted on every creature in the world. HKBP is one of the Churches who made their vocation in Batak land. HKBP was greatly influenced by zending who preached the gospel to the Batak people. However, HKBP in carrying out its Theology, it is also included in cultural values, especially the culture of the Batak marriage as a form of contextual theology carried out. Therefore, HKBP can declare the sign of Shalom to the congregation through Church rules that must be followed by all members of the HKBP church. This is an effort to contextualize theology carried out by HKBP on the kinship culture of the Batak Society. Keywords: custom, theology of HKBP, Toba Batak society

Basic-theoretical foundations of the blessing in the worship service and ensuing guidelines for the liturgy The Biblical foundations of the blessing in the church service and the meaning and function of the salutatory and sending- away blessings are the focus of this article. A short extract from history follows, and based on findings from Scripture and his- tory, theoretical perspectives for practice and liturgical guide- lines are indicated. Some of the most important conclusions drawn are the following: The congregation of Jesus Christ should receive the blessing of the Lord as indispensable gift in its assemblage. Without this blessing communion with God and each other, trust in God and fulfilment of each believer’s voca- tion in the world are impossible. The salutatory blessing pours out onto the congregation all the blessings that enable mem- bers to participate to advantage in the church service. The congregation is blessed and sent back into the world by God himself. Without the sending-away blessing the congregation cannot fulfil its vocation in the world, especially to be witnesses for Christ. If an ordained minister of the gospel is present in the gathering of the congregation he should pronounce the bles- sing, which comes directly from God. It is vital that the congre- gation appropriate the blessing in faith by means of an overt act, namely by saying “amen” to that.

The article is devoted to the issue of contemporary church, perhaps the church of the recent times, to the issue of its parishioners and the characteristics of their psychological disposition, scope of reading, thought and ideas. Where is the marking line that divides them from the “secular life”, from “good laypeople” who also aspire to be moral? We see this marking line in the realization (awareness) of the conception of the sin and the use of this realization in everyday life. The root of difference between the “ecclesiastical traditionalists” and “ecclesiastical liberals”, that are connected with two diverse theologies and two diverse anthropologies, lies in the different attitude to the conception of sin. The traditionalists support the ascetic church doctrine that now more and more penetrates the parishioners’ life, and the liberals, voluntary or involuntary, absorbed the idea of the Man of the New Time, natural man, who due to the newest tendencies is gradually turning into an “unnatural man”. The disappearance of the concept of sin from the public conscience makes it impossible to deliver such sermons as the Saint Holy John of Kronstadt. The church and the laypeople tend more and more to talk past each other, the ecclesiasts turn more introvertive, unsociable and misunderstood by the world. Jesus Christ also spoke about this phenomenon: “If you were from the world, the world would love its own, but I chose you from the world, so the world hates you”. The tragic aspect of this saying becomes more evident in our time that has certain apocalyptic traits.

This chapter argues that theological thinking should be considered as intrinsic to the activity of proclamation and as a form of speculation called forth as part of God’s salvific economy. God’s Word not only became flesh and revealed the Father, but Christ and his Spirit also act in his body, the Church, to reform and elevate human reason, to shape our understanding and celebration of revelation. This is so, even as theological thinking is also a human activity that may go astray. Theological thinking contains at its heart a dynamic relationship between attentive interpretation to Scripture and attention to the radical newness brought about by the continuing activity of Christ and the Spirit in the world. At the same time, in attention to the Church’s tradition, the theologian finds a school for the speculative imagination. The final section focuses on the unity and diversity of different theological acts and subdisciplines.

A more meaningful evening service We inherited the practice of the evening service (evening prayer), and with it the problem of its diminishing importance. Various factors contributed to this state of affairs. Guidelines for a more meaningful evening service, are: » It must be a genuine church service » It must have a different character from the morning service, and as such a freer character. » The form should be varied and can have alternatively different accents: an ordinary morning service, a service with holy communion, a service with the accent on teaching, prayer, song, the main lines of the church work, confession and witness, discussion or fellowship/koinonia. The watch word is proper preparation, good control, variation and responsibility.
