Contemporary Finnish folk music, unlike internationally successful contemporary Finnish rock (HIM, Nightwish, The Rasmus), transmits Finnish and Finno-Ugric tradition in a reinterpreted form to international audiences. This article explores this transmission through a case analysis of Äijö, a song by Värttinä, "the brand name" of Finnish World Music. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) provides a unified framework, which allows for tan examination of how different folk music traditions and the practices of Western popular music have been used in Äijö. The data with which this research was undertaken consists of publicly available media texts representing different stages of the production, distribution and consumption of Äijö.

Drawing on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the article highlights various conceptions of violence at a Swedish boarding school and is based on a critical discourse analysis of different educational and media documents. The investigation indicates that ambitions to protect children from violence need to overcome the dichotomy of private and public in order to protect children affected by violence in the borderland between the private and public spheres.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore how the notion of “relevance” is produced, distributed and consumed in the field of management research by applying a critical discourse analysis (CDA) as a theoretical lens. A CDA perspective offers a way to scrutinize the power relations that emerge with journal rankings and how these influence how the relevance discourse develops. Design/methodology/approach This paper illustrates how a CDA perspective can be fruitfully applied to the relevance literature, exemplifying such an application with two illustrative texts. The texts represent two distinct cases; one is a fictive story informally distributed among scholars, and the other is an extract of a published review on the relevance debate. Findings A CDA lens sheds light on how academic power relations are maintained in the production, distribution and consumption of the “relevance” notion. It shows the importance of individual awareness among management researchers of how the discourse is shaped. Research limitations/implications To increase the generalizability of the study, a CDA lens could be applied to a larger amount of texts in the relevance literature. The findings imply that the relevance literature would benefit from contributions bridging the gap between rigor and relevance, and questioning how power relations are maintained. Originality/value CDA adds a new perspective to the relevance debate, revealing how academic power relations are maintained with management scholars’ adherence to journal norms and the implications of this act.

Movie and discourse have been an academic concern. Based on the theoretical framework of Fairclough concept (1995), this study attempts to make a meso-level critical discourse analysis of a local movie, Rudy Habibie (2016). It explores how the discursive is formed and legitimized in the process of production, distribution, and consumption by the representation of the movie Rudy Habibie. It validates the effectiveness of CDA as a tool to reveal the relationship between language and ideology. It proves that Fairclough’s framework can be applied in the movie discursive study. Pratically it draws the attention to the ideologies embedded in movie discourse and encourages to improve the critical thinking. The findings described the various behaviors taken from the movie Rudy Habibie which are aimed to reveal stereotypes, presuppositions, hegemony, power and ideological stances. As the consequences, this movie became the best selling movie in 2016. The presented ideology delivered the audience through the story of the movie as the result of the text production, distribution, and consumption. The representation contributes to the construction of social power. Furthermore, the research believed having implications for language teaching, especially in CDA subject. Toward the applying of the CDA approach in the course, the student will be able to achieve the understanding of the writer’s style, finding meaning and reasons for particular stylistic choices.

Using the method of the critical discourse analysis and the insights of George Orwell „1984“ the author aims at analysing the propaganda mechanisms (production distribution and perception) of the totalitarian press in the 1950-s. The socio-political context of the press and the new relations between orality and literacy because of the domination of the new elite (mainly of village origin and with low education) have been outlined. The text analysis discovers the duality of the themes, the centralized and passive sources of the texts, new genres and the new imagery explained by some psychoanalytical concepts. The structure of the newspeak changed considerably with logoside and intensive production of neologisms, especially abbreviations, abundance of euphemisms and doublethinks which aim at closing the thought in vicious circles.

Male music artistes have been observed to sexualise women in their songs, especially when commenting on societal problems. Employing van Dijk’s Socio-Cognitive Approach of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this paper examined skin bleaching and women sexualisation in the lyrics of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (Fela Kuti) and Ayinla Omowura. Both songs: Yellow Fever by the latter and Oro kan je mi logun (a matter concerns me) by the former were purposively selected based on popularity and thematic preoccupation, and analysed using linguistic and argumentative strategies. Findings showed persistent sexualisation of women in the songs that were meant to teach morals in the society. Therefore, this exposes the artistes as incurably prejudiced in spite of their best intention. Keywords: Skin bleaching, Women sexualisation, Popular music, Fela Kuti, Ayinla Omowura

The article is focused on the dynamics of Maulid Nabi (MN / Birthof the Prophet Muhammad) discourses in Minangkabau manuscripts (kitabs) written by local Muslim scholars. In the context of local Islamic discourses, the MN discourse is one of the controversial polemics that encourage some scholars to conduct researches on it. However, the studies on the manuscripts written by the Minangkabau Muslim scholars arestill very rare to find. Therefore, one of the objectives of this thesis is to fill in “the blank” on the related literatures of MN discourse analysis in Minangkabau by studying the manuscripts of local Muslim scholars. This study use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by combining the CDA model of Norman Fariclough and Ruth Wodak. In CDA perspectives, the MN discourses are not only analysed at the texts level only but also preceded at the historical and socio-cultural contexts of the texts. Generally, this study explains how the manuscripts of the local Muslim scholars describe the discourse dynamic of MN in Minangkabau. To arrive at the conclusion, the MN discourses are analysed starting from the discourses production, distribution, and consumption. From the analysis, the study shows some facts that the works discursively related to MN had become ideologicaldiscourses which shape and strengthen the identity of elderMinangkabau Muslim scholars (Kaum Tua). At the same time, the practices of MN discourses become the strong values protecting them from the discursive attack of the younger Muslim scholars (Kaum Muda). Discourses war in writing and public debate in the reformation of Islam in Minangkabau had given positive impacts on the intellectual traditions in Minangkabau scholars for both the elder and younger Muslim scholars.

Discourse analysis has been noticed by several language researchers and educators over the past two decades. This study aims to analyze the use of discourse analysis on film as a medium of learning in improving students' critical thinking skills, especially in learning discourse analysis. Rudy Habibie's film is used as a medium for this analysis. The conceptual framework framework for Fairclough was adopted in this study, with a focus on analyzing meso-level critical discourse. This study explores how discursively formed in the process of production, distribution, and consumption in the film Rudy Habibie. This finding illustrates various behaviors taken from the Rudy Habibie film which aims to express stereotypes, prejudices, hegemony, power, and ideological attitudes. The ideology presented leads the audience through the film's story as a result of text production, distribution, and consumption. Representation contributes to building social strength. Furthermore, this research is believed to have implications for language teaching, especially in discourse analysis. The application of a critical discourse analysis approach in learning makes students able to understand the writer, find meaning and reason about certain writing styles and to enhance their critical thinking.
