Discourse analysis has been noticed by several language researchers and educators over the past two decades. This study aims to analyze the use of discourse analysis on film as a medium of learning in improving students' critical thinking skills, especially in learning discourse analysis. Rudy Habibie's film is used as a medium for this analysis. The conceptual framework framework for Fairclough was adopted in this study, with a focus on analyzing meso-level critical discourse. This study explores how discursively formed in the process of production, distribution, and consumption in the film Rudy Habibie. This finding illustrates various behaviors taken from the Rudy Habibie film which aims to express stereotypes, prejudices, hegemony, power, and ideological attitudes. The ideology presented leads the audience through the film's story as a result of text production, distribution, and consumption. Representation contributes to building social strength. Furthermore, this research is believed to have implications for language teaching, especially in discourse analysis. The application of a critical discourse analysis approach in learning makes students able to understand the writer, find meaning and reason about certain writing styles and to enhance their critical thinking.

Movie and discourse have been an academic concern. Based on the theoretical framework of Fairclough concept (1995), this study attempts to make a meso-level critical discourse analysis of a local movie, Rudy Habibie (2016). It explores how the discursive is formed and legitimized in the process of production, distribution, and consumption by the representation of the movie Rudy Habibie. It validates the effectiveness of CDA as a tool to reveal the relationship between language and ideology. It proves that Fairclough’s framework can be applied in the movie discursive study. Pratically it draws the attention to the ideologies embedded in movie discourse and encourages to improve the critical thinking. The findings described the various behaviors taken from the movie Rudy Habibie which are aimed to reveal stereotypes, presuppositions, hegemony, power and ideological stances. As the consequences, this movie became the best selling movie in 2016. The presented ideology delivered the audience through the story of the movie as the result of the text production, distribution, and consumption. The representation contributes to the construction of social power. Furthermore, the research believed having implications for language teaching, especially in CDA subject. Toward the applying of the CDA approach in the course, the student will be able to achieve the understanding of the writer’s style, finding meaning and reasons for particular stylistic choices.

The present paper investigates Anti-terrorism Ideology (ATI) in King Abdullah II of Jordan political discourse following a critical discourse methodology and focusing on three speeches delivered in 2015. The socio-cognitive approach is adopted as an analytical framework to decipher the underlying ideological attitudes and meanings that are encoded in these speeches. The study revealed that semantic aspects including lexical choices, repetition, and presupposition have been employed to construct (ATI) that aimed at creating a negative mental image of terrorists and a positive image of Islam.

Abstract This article investigates the affective politics of heritage, memory, place and regeneration in Mansfield, UK. Ravaged by workplace closures from the 1980s, Mansfield's local government and cultural partners have supposedly put heritage at the centre of urban regeneration policies. Principal are ambiguous, and forestalled, ambitions to mobilize the industrial past to build urban futures. Yet these heritages, and their attendant memories and histories, are emotionally evocative and highly contested. The affective politics are played out in the material, embodied and atmospheric remains of the industrial past as Mansfield struggles to make sense of its industrial legacies. Drawing on Critical Discourse Analysis, archival research, observant participation and interview data, this article critiques heritage-based regeneration; examines interrelations between local memory, class, place and history; and interprets tensions between competing imaginaries of what Mansfield is, was and should be. Contributing to work on memory and class in post-industrial towns, the article demonstrates that affect and place should be central to our considerations of heritage-based urban regeneration. In the case of Mansfield, an 'emotional regeneration' will be denied until a shared practice of remembering the affective ruptures of the past is enabled.

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are not only criteria of making test items for students, they also have to be implemented in daily basis especially in the teaching and learning process. Students can use the skills when they are familiar with them. In order to make the students familiar with the use of HOTS in the classroom, the researcher assimilates critical discourse analysis (CDA) and debating technique to foster the students’ ability in using their HOT skills. The use of the skills is seen from the activities of analyzing, evaluating, and creating that are done through the implementation of CDA and debate technique. Technology is also used here since the students have to enrich their knowledge on the motion debated by searching some relevant issues online. The sample of the research is 32 students of the fourth semester who are studying speaking skill in the English Education Study Program of Pakuan University. The research shows that the assimilation of CDA and debate technique can make the students familiar with the use of higher order thinking skills which are analyzing, evaluating, and creating. This paper suggests that teachers should use the assimilation to foster students’ use of HOTS.

Purpose of Study: The present study investigated the impact of critical discourse analysis (CDA) on Indonesian students teachers’ critical thinking skills in their final projects. Methodology: The study analyzed four final projects of student teachers text analysis. It was a qualitative meta-study applying four stages of Brengtsson'scontent analysis. These student teachers analyzed the world leaders’ political speeches and lawyers’ arguments in court using the CDA approach. Results: The result of the analysis indicated that 58.3% of the students got the Proficient Level achievement, spreading from the critical skills of communication, analysis (interpretation) and synthesis. Implications/Applications: The result illustrates that text analysis with CDA devices positively influenced the student teachers’ critical thinking skills. Meanwhile, 75% of them were at low achievement, at the Emergent level, for Reflection (Self-regulating) skills, due to the fact that these students were not accustomed to observing their own analysis.

The strategic communication of violent extremist organizations have evolved dramatically in the past few years. This chapter examines the evolution of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in relation to the Islamic State (IS) by showing that the two movements have always had different worldviews and, consequently, very different communicative strategies and discourses. To this end, this chapter presents the results of a detailed analysis of texts produced by AQIM and of an analysis of the visual propaganda of IS both performed through the lens of Critical Discourse Analysis.
