The German geographer Voeltzkow, although he only spent something over a month on Aldabra during April to May 1895, made the first known collection of Entomostraca from the atoll. His lively account includes mention of four species of Ostracoda and also records the occurrence of daphnid cladocerans (Voeltzkow 1897, p. 67; English translation p. 21). Voeltzkow’s collection was described by G. W. Muller, who added another ostracode, a Centrocypris species which he did not describe because of scanty material, to Voeltzkow’s list (Muller 1898, pp. 275- 283). Ostracodes and cladocerans were also recorded by the Bristol University expeditions of 1964 and 1965 but not collected (R. Gaymer, personal communication 1967). The next additions to the known fauna were made by G. A. Wright of the British Museum (Natural History) who cultured ostracodes, an anostracan, Streptocephalus sp. and the conchostracan, Eulimnadia sp., from mud samples obtained during a September 1966 reconnaissance visit (Stoddart & Wright 1967, p. 1175). Further collections of dried mud from Aldabra were made by J. F. Peake of the British Museum (Natural History) during phase I (August to September 1967) of the Royal Society Expedition to Aldabra. One of these, from a pool between Croix Blanc and Anse Cèdres (the locality of sample 8, see appendix A) has been cultured since 5 December 1967 (see §8 ( d )).

This research entitled “Translation Strategies of Idioms: With Special Reference to “Anak Semua Bangsa” and “Child of All Nations”. The aims of this research are to find out the translation strategies applied by the translator in translating the idioms of ST to the TT and to identify the types of equivalence of the translated idioms. The data were in form of idioms collected from an Indonesian novel “Anak Semua Bangsa” and its English translation “Child of All Nations”. Observation method and note-taking technique was used in collecting the data. The data were analyzed using descriptive-qualitative method. In order to answer the formulated questions, the theory of translation strategies of translating idiom proposed by Mona Baker in “In Other Words” (1992) was applied in analyzing the translation strategies used by the translator in translating the idioms in the novels and the theory of equivalence proposed by Eugene Nida in Toward a Science of Translating (1964) to identify the types of equivalence of the translated idioms. The results indicate that there are only three translation strategies found in the translation of 20 idioms used as the data in this study. Moreover, both Nida’s theory of Formal and Dynamic Equivalence were found in the translation of the idioms.

This paper aims to explicate and examine one of the poems written by Goenawan Mohamad, Poem No. 15, which is included in his poem and poetic essay collection entitled Tuhan dan Hal-hal yang Tak Pernah Selesai, which was translated into On God and Other Unfinished Things by Laksmi Pamuntjak by applying Reiss’ method. This method scrutinizes the translation shift, especially the expression shift and the intralinguistic criteria comprising semantic, lexical, grammatical, and stylistic features. As a creative composition and a piece of literary work that illuminates the imaginative, emotional, and intellectual experience and creativity of its author, a poem is classified in the expressive text type based on Reiss’ text-type category. The result shows that there are several intralinguistic criteria and stylistic features maintained and also modified by the translator in the English translation of Goenawan Mohamad’s Poem No. 15 in On God and Other Unfinished Things, that is done not only to preserve the aesthetic dimension of the language used in the poem but also to fulfill the expressive function of the text. By employing various translation shifts and metaphor translation to make the target text more natural, preserving the relevant aspects of the semantic content, and taking the standpoint of the author in translating the poem, the English translation of Poem No. 15 can fulfill its quality assessment required by its expressive text type.

The present study is devoted to the discussion on errors of English translation into Arabic with special reference to English compound nouns. The study is confined to the students of the Department of English, Faculty of education, Hodeidah University, Yemen as they face various difficulties and commit errors while translating English compound nouns into Arabic and vice versa. The researcher aims at examining multiple factors responsible for this state of affairs and make pedagogical suggestions to improve teaching and learning and thereby helping in the process of translation. For this study, the researcher has collected the data by conducting the test of 40 students of I to IV level, Department of English, Hodeidah University, Yemen. The test consists of one question having three items and each item has five words. In findings, the researcher concludes that the students face various difficulties and obstacles in the process of translating English compounds into Arabic. Moreover, they commit a number of mistakes while translating English compounds.
