Understanding Students’ Values: A Way of the National Service Training Program, University of Northern Philippines

The current situation of the society is different from what it was used to be which is probably the cause of the advent of technology that caught the individual in a complex culture that menaces morals and values. This study determined the socio-cultural and moral-spiritual values of the National Service Training Program NSTP students from the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) using the descriptive-correlational research design. A questionnaire adopted from the Value Scale made by the National Coordinating Center for the Study of the Development of Filipino Children and Youth (NCCSDFCY) utilized by Obrero (1994) was used. Frequencies and percentages weighted mean, and simple correlation analysis was used to analyze the data gathered in the study. The results of the study revealed that the respondents have low socio-cultural and moral-spiritual values, but they are highly oriented on spiritual enrichment component. Correlation analysis revealed that there is a significant and substantial relationship between age and educational attainment and socio-cultural values of the respondents. Significant relationship between age, mothers’ educational attainment and occupation, and the type of secondary school where they graduated and moral-spiritual values of the respondents. It was concluded that the NSTP students have low socio-cultural and moral-spiritual values. Significant and substantial relationships exist between educational attainment and age and socio-cultural values of the respondents. Significant relationship also existed between age, mothers’ educational attainment and occupation, and the type of secondary school graduated from and moral-spiritual values of the respondents.

Service-learning in the educational sector has shown increased impact on student lifelong learning and institutional commitment to the community over the past decade. Universities in the Philippines provide various service-learning programs for their partner communities, to address students’ understanding of real-life community needs. However, there has been little study on students’ service-learning in geriatric institutions. This article first discusses higher education in the Philippines, noting the impact of the National Service Training Program on institutions’ programs. It then describes how one university, the University of Santo Tomas, has responded to this policy framework with the development of community programs that also meet its goals for social transformation. One particular program is examined – a service-learning program involving college students and a geriatric institution in Manila. Early qualitative feedback provides an understanding of college students’ perceptions of the elderly and the service-learning implemented by the university. It also offers a strong foundation for continuing to improve the current service-learning program. From this study an 8-loop model has been developed for future evaluations of the service-learning program in this geriatric institution. National Service Training Program (NSTP) is a very significant factor in the values formation of students. The study determined the status and challenges of NSTP and its impact on students’ values formation. The respondents were 349 NSTP graduates from school year 2013-2014. A set of researcher-made survey questionnaire was used as tool in data gathering. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used a descriptive statistics and Man-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis H Test at 0.05 alpha were employed as inferential statistics. All statistical computations were processed through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results showed that the status of NSTP implementation as perceived by students as a whole and when grouped as to sex and program component was “good” and when classified as to course, Fisheries rated “excellent”.  As to challenges of NSTP implementation, the Fisheries rated “serious” and when classified as to course, “very serious”. The impact of NSTP on students’ values formation as a whole and classified as to variables was “high.” No significance difference on the level of challenges was noted when variables were classified into sex and program component but a significant difference as to course. The good values of students at UA are greatly influenced by the program policies of NSTP training.

The primary purpose of this study is to ascertain the benefits of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) implementation and to identify the problems encountered by its implementers. Results showed that the benefits derived from the program were topped by enhancement of skills on basic leadership with emphases on the ability to listen and ability to communicate which were rated very important and very much benefited among other training aspects of the program. Results also revealed that students are aware of the importance of physical, mental and social health as well as the observance of proper hygiene for overall sense of well-being. Although recreation is one aspect that the respondents find important, appreciation of it underscores the need to have more time for assignments and projects as most of the respondents are enrolled in their respective courses with 29 units, making them unable to appreciate the perks of involving themselves into various recreational activities. Problems in the implementation showed lack of provision of materials and equipment and of budgetary allocation which rendered full implementation weak as students and faculty involved in the community immersion have to rely on their own resources, in addition to the indifference and passivity of the local government officials. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended that: the school administrators need to allocate adequate budget for materials and equipment; periodic faculty development trainings and; to look into the passive attitude of the local officials to ensure that implementation NSTP projects will benefit both clients and implementers.

School’s access to technology is increasing steadily every day and most of these technologies are now even used in classroom. Due to these circumstances, educators’ ideas of using technology to support deeper learning in multiple ways gave rise to the concepts of distance and blended learning. Hence, this study determined the readiness in Mathematics flipped classroom of selected Filipino secondary school teachers at the Division Schools of Tanauan City during the School Year 2016-2017. Specifically, it dealt with the following: profile of the respondents in terms of sex, age, highest educational attainment, and number of seminars attended related to ICT; respondents’ assessment on their readiness in Mathematics flipped classroom; and relationship between the respondents’ profile and their readiness in Mathematics flipped classroom. By employing the descriptive type of research with the researcher-made questionnaire, the study found out that the respondents were ready in Mathematics flipped classroom. Moreover, the results of the study revealed that there was a significant relationship between the respondents’ profile and their readiness in Mathematics flipped classroom. With these, the researchers proposed a course of action to support the readiness of Mathematics teachers in a flipped classroom.
