From Two to One Index Isomorphism in Optimization Program for Quarterly Disaggregation of Annual Times Series

The quarterly disaggregation of an annual economic aggregate, by a mathematical method with a cyclical indicator, gives rise to a problem of minimization to make the quarterly economic aggregate smooth. This involves two indexes for the quarter and the year, which sometimes can make the resolution algorithm less efficient if the problem is large. In this paper we propose a method of indexing quarterly variables based on an isomorphic transformation of a two-index program into a one-index program, in order to minimize the cost of the algorithm of resolution. This method of continuous indexing of variables, applied to national accounts, shows that the algorithm with a single index is more efficient than the algorithm with two indexes when solving the optimization program of the quarterly disaggregation.

The WestRock mill in Covington, VA, USA, initiated a long term diagnostic and optimization program for all three of its bleaching lines. Benchmarking studies were used to help identify optimization opportunities. Capital expenditures for mixing improvement, filtrate changes, equipment repair, other equipment changes, and species changes were outside the scope of this work. This focus of this paper is the B line, producing southern hardwood pulp in a D(EP)DD sequence at 88% GE brightness. The benchmarking study and optimization work identified the following opportunities for improved performance: nonoptimal addition of caustic and hydrogen peroxide to the (EP) stage, carryover of D0 filtrate to the (EP) stage, and carryover of (EP) filtrate to the D1 stage. As a result of actions the mill undertook to address these opportunities, D0 kappa factor decreased about 5%, sodium hydroxide consumption in the (EP) stage decreased about 35%, chlorine dioxide consumption in the D1 stage decreased about 25%, and overall bleaching cost decreased about 15%.

At time of commissioning, the Racine, Wisconsin, USA ultrafiltration (UF) membrane treatment system fail short of meeting its operational goals concerning capacity and chemical cleaning intervals. The systematic optimization of this 189-million-litre-per-day (MLD) capacity UF system provided tangible operational benefits, which included a 30-percent reduction in power use, a 50-percent reduction in chlorine chemical use, a 36-percent reduction in citric acid use and a simultaneous 7-percent increase in net treatment capacity of the system. In addition, the optimization program reduced the level of buildup of foulants on the surface of the membranes. This paper summarizes the optimization procedures followed at Racine, discussing how similar measures may be applicable to other water treatment facilities.
