Parametric wave growth curves are commonly used to empirically calculate wave height under fetch limited conditions and to tune the source functions of spectral wave models. There is not a unique wave growth function and many deviations from the first similarity laws have been reported. The applicability of the commonly used functions in variable wind conditions is expected to be limited. In this study we calculated wave growth curves with data from an instrumental set-up in the north-western Mediterranean. This region is characterized by non-homogeneous wind conditions (both in time and space). The first growth functions we calculated from the observations suggested higher wave growth rates than previously described by other authors. A close look to the sources of discrepancy in the calculations under such wind conditions revealed the importance to accurately separate sea from swell and to use only locally generated sea. The source of the wind data used for the scaling law is thought to be responsible for the remaining discrepancies from the commonly used growth functions. Wind and wave data from a high resolution simulation were used to calculate the growth functions from a spectral wave model, and to explore the importance of using in-situ wind measures to scale the variables. Simulated wave growth rates are lower than observed and lower than previously reported by other authors. Wind measurements from the most offshore buoy seem to be representative enough of the winds over the entire area. The results support the applicability of the well-known functions in the region of interest when certain conditions are met; i.e. pure wind sea conditions, and choosing a representative wind speed to scale the variables.

The idea that an animal of a given kind has, and grows to, a final or mature size is a useful one and several equations have been proposed that describe such growth to maturity (Winsor, 1932; Parks, 1982; Taylor, 1982). The Gompertz is one of these growth functions and describes in a comparatively simple, single equation the sigmoidal pattern of growth. It has 3 parameters, only 2 of which are important - mature size A and the rate parameter B. Estimates of A and B, however, are highly correlated. Considering A and B as a lumped parameter (AB) may overcome this problem. A Gompertz, or any other, growth function is not expected to describe all growth curves. When the environment (e.g., feed, housing) is non-limiting, it may provide a useful and succinct description of growth. The objectives of this study were to examine: (i) if the Gompertz equation adequately describes the growth of two genotypes of sheep under conditions designed to be non-limiting; and, (ii) if the lumped parameter AB has more desirable properties for estimation than A and B separately.

Abstract Theoretical understanding of the growth of wind-driven surface water waves has been based on two distinct mechanisms: growth due to random atmospheric pressure fluctuations unrelated to wave amplitude and growth due to wave coherent atmospheric pressure fluctuations proportional to wave amplitude. Wave-independent random pressure forcing produces wave growth linear in time, while coherent forcing proportional to wave amplitude produces exponential growth. While observed wave development can be parameterized to fit these functional forms and despite broad agreement on the underlying physical process of momentum transfer from the atmospheric boundary layer shear flow to the water waves by atmospheric pressure fluctuations, quantitative agreement between theory and field observations of wave growth has proved elusive. Notably, wave growth rates are observed to exceed laminar instability predictions under gusty conditions. In this work, a mechanism is described that produces the observed enhancement of growth rates in gusty conditions while reducing to laminar instability growth rates as gustiness vanishes. This stochastic parametric instability mechanism is an example of the universal process of destabilization of nearly all time-dependent flows.

This paper presents an estimation of growth curves and spatiotemporal distributions of juvenile shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) in the western and central North Pacific Ocean using port sampling data collected from 2005 to 2013. The monthly length compositions show a clear transition of three modes in the size range of smaller than 150-cm precaudal length (PCL), which were believed to represent the growth of age-0 to age-2 classes, and they were then decomposed into age groups by fitting a Gaussian mixture distribution. Simulation data of lengths at monthly ages were generated from the mean and standard deviation of each distribution, and fit with a von Bertalanffy growth function. Parameters of the estimated growth curves for males and females were 274.4 and 239.4cm PCL for the asymptotic length and 0.19 and 0.25 year–1 for the growth coefficient indicating apparently faster growth than previously reported. Generalised linear models were applied to age-0 to explore the seasonal changes of PCL by area. They were born during late autumn and winter off the coast of north-eastern Japan, an area known to have relatively high productivity compared with other pelagic areas, and gradually expanded their habitat eastward and northward with the seasons as they grew.

Growth records were obtained from 12 research establishments across Canada for pigs fed according to current (1960–63) recommendations of nutrition and management. Growth curves showing age in days and weight in pounds are presented for the various breeds and crossbreds, for between-station comparisons, for comparison of upper and lower quartiles in purebred pigs, and for comparison of growth rates of purebreds with that of Yorkshires of 20 to 25 years ago.Age at 200 lb averaged from 152 to 187 days, among 10 stations for the Yorkshire breed. Pigs of each of the pure breeds reached 200 lb about 3 weeks earlier than that indicated in previous studies. Crossbred pigs of each of four different crosses grew more rapidly than average Yorkshires, some reaching 200 lb in 140 days and having gains in excess of 2.3 lb/day during the finishing period. Yorkshire, Lacombe, and Landrace pigs had similar growth curves. The upper quartile averaged 1.8 and the lower 1.4 lb/day gain between 100 and 200 lb weights. Slow-maturing pigs tended to be below average throughout life but differences in maturity between stations seemed to reflect differing rates of gain in early life, since finishing period gains were similar in 8 of 10 stations.

Abstract. The effects of wave-current interactions on shelf ocean forecasts is investigated in the framework of the MFSTEP (Mediterranean Forecasting System Project Towards Enviromental Predictions) project. A one way sequential coupling approach is adopted to link the wave model (WAM) to the circulation model (SYMPHONIE). The coupling of waves and currents has been done considering four main processes: wave refraction due to currents, surface wind drag and bottom drag modifications due to waves, and the wave induced mass flux. The coupled modelling system is implemented in the southern Catalan shelf (NW Mediterranean), a region with characteristics similar to most of the Mediterranean shelves. The sensitivity experiments are run in a typical operational configuration. The wave refraction by currents seems to be not very relevant in a microtidal context such as the western Mediterranean. The main effect of waves on current forecasts is through the modification of the wind drag. The Stokes drift also plays a significant role due to its spatial and temporal characteristics. Finally, the enhanced bottom friction is just noticeable in the inner shelf.

Predicting demographic rates is a critical part of forecasting the future of ecosystems under global change. Here, we test if growth rates can be predicted from morphological traits for a highly diverse group of colonial symbiotic organisms: scleractinian corals. We ask whether growth is isometric or allometric among corals, and whether most variation in coral growth rates occurs at the level of the species or morphological group. We estimate growth as change in planar area for 11 species, across five morphological groups and over 5 years. We show that coral growth rates are best predicted from colony size and morphology rather than species. Coral size follows a power scaling law with a constant exponent of 0.91. Despite being colonial organisms, corals have consistent allometric scaling in growth. This consistency simplifies the task of projecting community responses to disturbance and climate change.

The effects of a d.c. magnetic field on stimulated Raman sidescatter from laser-produced plasmas is studied. For exact sidescatter along the magnetic field, the Raman instability separates into two distinct decays in which the scattered light is either a right (RHCP) or left (LHCP) circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. Growth rates of the instabilities can be enhanced in the former case but are diminished in the latter. The magnetic field induced effects are greatest near the quarter critical density where frequency shifts can be especially significant, being equal to ± ¼Ωc for decay into RHCP and LHCP waves, respectively.
