The maximum correntropy Kalman filter (MCKF) is an effective algorithm that was proposed to solve the non-Gaussian filtering problem for linear systems. Compared with the original Kalman filter (KF), the MCKF is a sub-optimal filter with Gaussian correntropy objective function, which has been demonstrated to have excellent robustness to non-Gaussian noise. However, the performance of MCKF is affected by its kernel bandwidth parameter, and a constant kernel bandwidth may lead to severe accuracy degradation in non-stationary noises. In order to solve this problem, the mixture correntropy method is further explored in this work, and an improved maximum mixture correntropy KF (IMMCKF) is proposed. By derivation, the random variables that obey Beta-Bernoulli distribution are taken as intermediate parameters, and a new hierarchical Gaussian state-space model was established. Finally, the unknown mixing probability and state estimation vector at each moment are inferred via a variational Bayesian approach, which provides an effective solution to improve the applicability of MCKFs in non-stationary noises. Performance evaluations demonstrate that the proposed filter significantly improves the existing MCKFs in non-stationary noises.

AbstractWe study a Szilard engine based on a Gaussian state of a system consisting of two bosonic modes placed in a noisy channel. As the initial state of the system is taken an entangled squeezed thermal state, and the quantum work is extracted by performing a measurement on one of the two modes. We use the Markovian Kossakowski-Lindblad master equation for describing the time evolution of the open system and the quantum work definition based on the second order Rényi entropy to simulate the engine. We also study the information-work efficiency of the Szilard engine as a function of the system parameters. The efficiency is defined as the ratio of the extractable work averaged over the measurement angle and the erasure work, which is proportional to the information stored in the system. We show that the extractable quantum work increases with the temperature of the reservoir and the squeezing between the modes, average numbers of thermal photons and frequencies of the modes. The work increases also with the strength of the measurement, attaining the maximal values in the case of a heterodyne detection. The extractable work is decreasing by increasing the squeezing parameter of the noisy channel and it oscillates with the phase of the squeezed thermal reservoir. The efficiency mostly has a similar behavior with the extractable quantum work evolution. However information-work efficiency decreases with temperature, while the quantity of the extractable work increases.

Active Inference (AIF) is a framework that can be used both to describe information processing in naturally intelligent systems, such as the human brain, and to design synthetic intelligent systems (agents). In this paper we show that Expected Free Energy (EFE) minimisation, a core feature of the framework, does not lead to purposeful explorative behaviour in linear Gaussian dynamical systems. We provide a simple proof that, due to the specific construction used for the EFE, the terms responsible for the exploratory (epistemic) drive become constant in the case of linear Gaussian systems. This renders AIF equivalent to KL control. From a theoretical point of view this is an interesting result since it is generally assumed that EFE minimisation will always introduce an exploratory drive in AIF agents. While the full EFE objective does not lead to exploration in linear Gaussian dynamical systems, the principles of its construction can still be used to design objectives that include an epistemic drive. We provide an in-depth analysis of the mechanics behind the epistemic drive of AIF agents and show how to design objectives for linear Gaussian dynamical systems that do include an epistemic drive. Concretely, we show that focusing solely on epistemics and dispensing with goal-directed terms leads to a form of maximum entropy exploration that is heavily dependent on the type of control signals driving the system. Additive controls do not permit such exploration. From a practical point of view this is an important result since linear Gaussian dynamical systems with additive controls are an extensively used model class, encompassing for instance Linear Quadratic Gaussian controllers. On the other hand, linear Gaussian dynamical systems driven by multiplicative controls such as switching transition matrices do permit an exploratory drive.

A new robust Kalman filter (KF) based on mixing distribution is presented to address the filtering issue for a linear system with measurement loss (ML) and heavy-tailed measurement noise (HTMN) in this paper. A new Student’s t-inverse-Wishart-Gamma mixing distribution is derived to more rationally model the HTMN. By employing a discrete Bernoulli random variable (DBRV), the form of measurement likelihood function of double mixing distributions is converted from a weighted sum to an exponential product, and a hierarchical Gaussian state-space model (HGSSM) is therefore established. Finally, the system state, the intermediate random variables (IRVs) of the new STIWG distribution, and the DBRV are simultaneously estimated by utilizing the variational Bayesian (VB) method. Numerical example simulation experiment indicates that the proposed filter in this paper has superior performance than current algorithms in processing ML and HTMN.

An important theorem in Gaussian quantum information tells us that we can diagonalize the covariance matrix of any Gaussian state via a symplectic transformation. While the diagonal form is easy to find, the process for finding the diagonalizing symplectic can be more difficult, and a common, existing method requires taking matrix powers, which can be demanding analytically. Inspired by a recently presented technique for finding the eigenvectors of a Hermitian matrix from certain submatrix eigenvalues, we derive a similar method for finding the diagonalizing symplectic from certain submatrix determinants, which could prove useful in Gaussian quantum information.

In this paper, a new variational Bayesian-based Kalman filter (KF) is presented to solve the filtering problem for a linear system with unknown time-varying measurement loss probability (UTVMLP) and non-stationary heavy-tailed measurement noise (NSHTMN). Firstly, the NSHTMN was modelled as a Gaussian-Student’s t-mixture distribution via employing a Bernoulli random variable (BM). Secondly, by utilizing another Bernoulli random variable (BL), the form of the likelihood function consisting of two mixture distributions was converted from a weight sum to an exponential product and a new hierarchical Gaussian state-space model was therefore established. Finally, the system state vector, BM, BL, the intermediate random variables, the mixing probability, and the UTVMLP were jointly inferred by employing the variational Bayesian technique. Simulation results revealed that in the scenario of NSHTMN, the proposed filter had a better performance than current algorithms and further improved the estimation accuracy of UTVMLP.

Generally speaking, it is difficult to compute the values of the Gaussian quantum discord and Gaussian geometric discord for Gaussian states, which limits their application. In the present paper, for any (n+m)-mode continuous-variable system, a computable Gaussian quantum correlation M is proposed. For any state ρAB of the system, M(ρAB) depends only on the covariant matrix of ρAB without any measurements performed on a subsystem or any optimization procedures, and thus is easily computed. Furthermore, M has the following attractive properties: (1) M is independent of the mean of states, is symmetric about the subsystems and has no ancilla problem; (2) M is locally Gaussian unitary invariant; (3) for a Gaussian state ρAB, M(ρAB)=0 if and only if ρAB is a product state; and (4) 0≤M((ΦA⊗ΦB)ρAB)≤M(ρAB) holds for any Gaussian state ρAB and any Gaussian channels ΦA and ΦB performed on the subsystem A and B, respectively. Therefore, M is a nice Gaussian correlation which describes the same Gaussian correlation as Gaussian quantum discord and Gaussian geometric discord when restricted on Gaussian states. As an application of M, a noninvasive quantum method for detecting intracellular temperature is proposed.
