The nonlinear mechanical behaviour of cervical tissue causes unpredictable changes in measured elastograms when pressure is applied. These uncontrolled variables prevent the reliable measurement of tissue elasticity in a clinical setting. Measuring the nonlinear properties of tissue is difficult due to the need for both shear modulus and strain to be taken simultaneously. A simulation-based method is proposed in this paper to resolve this. This study describes the nonlinear behaviour of cervical tissue using the hyperelastic material models of Demiray–Fung and Veronda–Westmann. Elastograms from 33 low-risk patients between 18 and 22 weeks gestation were obtained. The average measured properties of the hyperelastic material models are: Demiray–Fung—A1α = 2.07 (1.65–2.58) kPa, α = 6.74 (4.07–19.55); Veronda–Westmann—C1C2 = 4.12 (3.24–5.04) kPa, C2 = 4.86 (2.86–14.28). The Demiray–Fung and Veronda–Westmann models performed similarly in fitting to the elastograms with an average root mean square deviation of 0.41 and 0.47 ms−1, respectively. The use of hyperelastic material models to calibrate shear-wave speed measurements improved the consistency of measurements. This method could be applied in a large-scale clinical setting but requires updated models and higher data resolution.

Abstract The B2O3-doped silicate photonic crystal fiber (PCF) containing small core and dielectric rods made of lead silicate SF57 has been most intensively investigated for different pump signals centered at 0.65 mm, communication band. This type of doping has been carried out to significantly diminish the upgraded refractive index of silica which enhances special capabilities that lead to an outstanding potential to PCF for the profoundly intense field in the optical Kerr effect. In this paper, the mode analysis has been done by solving a nonlinear wave equation for a Gaussian input beam using the finite difference method under analytical boundary conditions. Numerical results reveal that very minute doping of B2O3 is enough in giving prolonged confinement of beam with flattened dispersion due to ultra-low change in nonlinear behaviour.

AbstractSmooth approaches are able to model reasonably well contact/impact events between two bodies, showing some peculiarities when dealing with certain geometries and arising certain issues with the detection of the initial instant of contact. The characterization of multiple-simultaneous interaction systems, considering (or not) energy dissipation phenomena (mainly friction), is always an interesting research topic, addressed from different perspectives. In the present work, the process of design, optimization and verification of a multiple-impact, day-to-day multibody novel model is shown. Specifically, we have decided to focus on a pool/billiard game due to its geometry simplicity. The model involves several balls moving freely and rolling, suffering different kinds of contacts/impacts among them and against the cushions and the cloth. In this system, the proper modelling of both contact and friction forces in the multiple, simultaneous contacts and impacts events is critical to obtain consistent results. In addition, these forces are complicated to model because of its nonlinear behaviour. The different existing approaches when dealing with multiple-contact events are briefly described, along with their most distinctive features. Then, the interactions identified on the model are implemented using several nonlinear contact-force models, following a smooth-based approach and considering friction phenomena, aiming at determining the most suitable set of both contact and friction force models for each of these implemented interactions, which take place simultaneously, thus resulting in a complex system with multiple impacts. Subsequently, the solving method that provides the most accurate results at the minimum computational cost is determined by testing a simple shot. Finally, the different interactions on the model are verified using experimental results and previous works. One of the main goals of this work is to show the some of the issues that arise when dealing with multiple-simultaneous impact multibody systems from a smooth-contact approach, and how researchers can deal with them.

AbstractYoung’s modulus of New Red Sandstone was investigated experimentally to gain insight into its nonlinear nature. A large experimental programme was carried out by applying a controllable quasi-static and dynamic uniaxial loading to 286 dry sandstone samples of four different sizes. The static and dynamic tests, similar to those aiming at determining the uniaxial compressive strength, were conducted using the state-of-the-art experimental facilities at the University of Aberdeen including a custom-built small experimental rig for inducing a dynamic uniaxial compressive load via a piezoelectric transducer. The obtained results have confirmed a complex nature of Young’s modulus of sandstone. Specifically, under a harmonic dynamic loading, it shows strongly nonlinear behaviour, which is hardening and softening with respect to frequency and amplitude of the dynamic loading, respectively.

Suspension seats are widely used in heavy vehicles to reduce vibration transmitted to human body and promote ride comfort. Previous studies have shown that the dynamics of the suspension seat exhibits nonlinear behaviour with changed vibration magnitudes. Despite various linear seat models developed in the past, a nonlinear model of the suspension seat capturing the nonlinear dynamic behaviour of the seat suspension and cushion has not been developed for the prediction of the seat transmissibility. This paper proposes a nonlinear lumped parameter model of the suspension seat to predict the nonlinear dynamic response of the seat. The suspension seat model comprises of a nonlinear suspension submodel integrated with a nonlinear cushion submodel. The parameters of the submodels are determined by minimizing the error between the simulated and the measured transmissibility of the suspension mechanism and the force-deflection curve of the seat cushion, respectively. The model of the complete seat is then validated using the seat transmissibility measured with inert mass under vertical vibration excitation. The results show that the proposed suspension seat model can be used to predict the seat transmissibility with various excitation magnitudes.

Abstract Describes the procedure of experimental measurement of the runoff coefficient C, both of individual layers and the entire composition extensive green roofs. Experimental measurements make it possible to determine the reference behaviour of runoff characteristics, namely runoff coefficient C, with emphasis on the simulation of the real behaviour of extensive green roofs. The aim is an elementary description of the structural and physical behaviour of extensive green roofs. For the needs of experimental measurement, the dimensional and shape limits of test specimens are described, the conditions for conditioning of individual specimens, the boundary conditions of execution and individual steps of the experiment. Then is specified the method of evaluation and subsequent verification of measured data. The result of the experimental measurement is the amount of drained water from the tested specimens of the extensive green roof at time t, which shows a nonlinear behaviour. From the set of measured data, it is then possible to predict the behaviour of extensive green roofs in real conditions and to determine the runoff coefficient C of the tested specimens. These data represent reference values for the subsequent design of sub-elements and structures of buildings.
