In transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steel, the strain-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) has a close relationship with the shear band formation. At a small length scale such as that of a crystal, the explicit analysis of the shear band structure with the formed microstructure is quite important for an adequate understanding of the SIMT. Here, a study on the microstructures formed by SIMT, related to shear band formation in both single and polycrystal TRIP steels, is presented. The constitutive equation for single crystal TRIP steel considering the transformation strain on each variant system is derived based on a rate-dependent crystal plasticity theory. To express the martensitic transformation, the cellular automata approach, including a transformation criterion acting as a local rule, is introduced. Numerical simulation is conducted with patterning processes of the martensitic phase at an infinite medium under the plane strain tension. It is found that the similar distributions of the plastic strain and the martensitic phase are dependent on the initial crystal orientation and appear as the shear band structures. In addition, the sizes of embryo and cell strongly influence the shear band formation and the martensitic volume fraction of crystal TRIP steel.

Abstract This paper presents an analytical thermo-mechanical model of shear localization and shear band formation in orthogonal cutting of high-strength metallic alloys. The deformation process of the workpiece material includes three stages: homogeneous deformation, shear localization, and chip segmentation. A boundary layer analysis is used to analytically predict the temperature, stress, and strain rate variations in the primary shear zone associated with the shear localization. The predictions of shear band spacing and width from the proposed model are verified by experimental characterization of the chip morphology. The rolling of shear bands on the tool rake face is discussed from the experimental observations. The cutting tool temperature, which is influenced by the heat generated during the shear band formation, is simulated and compared with the finite element simulations. The proposed analytical model reveals the fundamental mechanism of the complete shear localization process in orthogonal cutting, and predicts the stress and temperature variations with high computational efficiency.

The fatigue damage and fracture of metallic glasses (MGs) were reported to be dominated by shear band. While there exist several reviews about the fatigue behavior of MGs, an overview that mainly focuses on shear bands under cyclic loading is urgent, and is of great importance for the understanding of fatigue mechanisms and properties. In this review paper, based on the previous research results, the shear band evolution under cyclic loading including shear band formation, propagation and cracking, was summarized and elucidated. Furthermore, one strategy of enhancing the fatigue property through manipulating the microstructure to suppress the shear band formation was proposed. Additionally, the applications of the effect of annealing treatment and processing condition on fatigue behaviors were utilized to verify the strategy. Finally, several future directions of fatigue research in MG were presented.

In contrast to other cutting processes, adiabatic blanking typically features high blanking velocities (>3 m/s), which can lead to the formation of adiabatic shear bands in the blanking surface. The produced surfaces have excellent properties, such as high hardness, low roll-over, and low roughness. However, details about the qualitative and quantitative influence of significant process parameters on the quality of the blanked surface are still lacking. In the presented study, a variable tool is used for a systematic investigation of different process parameters and their influences on the blanked surface of a hardened 22MnB5 steel. Different relative clearances (1.67% to 16.67%), velocities (7 to 12.5 m/s), and impact energies (250 J to 1000 J) were studied in detail. It is demonstrated that a relative clearance of ≤6.67% and an impact velocity of ≥7 m/s lead to adiabatic shear band formation, regardless of the impact energy. Further, an initiated shear band results in the formation of an S-shaped surface. Unexpectedly, a low impact energy results in the highest geometric accuracy. The influence of the clearance, the velocity, and the impact energy on the evolution of adiabatic shear band formation is shown for the first time. The gained knowledge can enable a functionalization of the blanked surfaces in the future.
