Purpose This study aims to examine the effect of entrepreneurial intention and attitude towards knowledge sharing on new business creation by comparing two generations, Y generation (millennials) and Z generation (post-millennial). In addition, the current study uses a social cognitive theory as a point of departure to test the research hypotheses. Design/methodology/approach This study deploys a quantitative approach (hypothetic-deductive approach) by surveying 300 respondents representing the two Indonesian generations. The questionnaire consisting of demographic items (age, education, etc.) and variables was the primary research instrument. This study used regression analysis, a Wald test for examining the proposed hypotheses and a t-test to provide a deeper analysis of the findings. Findings Findings from the current study show that Gen Y is still seeking a balance for their learning sources by involving in their social environments as well as exploring the digital world. In contrast, Gen Z is much more dominant in the independence to learn things that interest them. They have less dependency on social patrons but prioritise themselves as the leading model. Practical implications The findings of this study provide practical implications for higher education institutions in the development of entrepreneurship education to achieve learning effectiveness. Originality/value This study aims to contribute by providing empirical evidence in the effect of entrepreneurial orientation and attitude towards knowledge sharing on new venture creation with particular reference to Gen Y and Gen Z, suggested by previous studies. Although Gen Y and Gen Z are digital natives, this study provides insight into a shift in the characteristic of two generations, as also found in comparison to previous generations, such as Baby-Boomer vs Gen X and Gen X vs Gen Y. This study proclaims the need to adjust organisational theories to enable them to explain the shifting phenomena at the micro and macro level for every generation. Exploratory research to better understand the characteristics of a generation in other settings is a crucial proposal proposed by this study.

The current condition of women in the Bantul Coast has low knowledge, skills, creative attitudes, and aspirations, which results in many women living in poverty. Therefore, women on the coast need to be empowered. Women's empowerment that needs to be done is empowerment in the economic field which is useful for overcoming poverty and education that is useful for developing organizational skills. This study aims to examine the effect of educational empowerment and economic empowerment on new venture creation and entrepreneurial self-efficacy as moderating variables in women on the Bantul coast. This research is expected to be able to provide additional empirical evidence to strengthen the concepts and theories regarding the factors that influence women's empowerment towards new venture creation and entrepreneurial self-efficacy and the application of these contents to the community. In terms of time dimension, this research is included in the cross-sectional research category. The sampling technique uses nonprobability sampling type purposive sampling. The sample in this study are women who are members of the Family Welfare Development (PKK) group in the coastal village of Bantul. The analytical model used is the Partial Least Square (PLS). The results of this study are the first effect of economic empowerment on new venture creation, the second is the effect of educational empowerment on new venture creation, and the third is entrepreneurial self-efficacy moderating the effect of education empowerment and economic empowerment on new venture creation.

AbstractEntrepreneurs rely, to a degree, on intuition while they also rely on rationality. Both are associated with formation of expectations for new venture creation as well as perseverance of efforts in managing the new venture and its creation. Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data from three distinct countries over a ten-year period are used in logistic regression analysis to find, not unexpectedly, that intuition and rationality vary in impact across countries and over time. While the findings confirm past findings, they also provide intriguing new insights into the dance between intuition and rationality in entrepreneurial processes.

A Model for New Venture Creation New ventures go through multiple stages: In the early stage, there is a business concept and preliminary evidence supporting the concept. In later stages, there are revenues and sales. In each stage, there are usually milestones for the venture to meet in order for investors to provide additional funding. Otherwise, the venture is abandoned. The entrepreneur can engage in a set of costly activities that aim to create value and reach the appropriate milestones. In “New Venture Creation: A Drift-Variance Diffusion Control Model,” Wang and Zenios develop a framework for new venture creation. The authors provide theoretical guidance on the optimal policy, which is relatively simple to describe. Their analysis reveals a trade-off between how costly an activity is and how much upside potential the activity generates, and their result shows how a new venture creator can manage that trade-off.

AbstrakFenomena kemunculan perniagaan teroka baharu oleh wanita bukanlah topik baru jika disusuri dari susur galur sorotan kajian lepas. Ramai penyelidik lepas melihat pelbagai perspektif yang berbeza-beza mengikut cabang disiplin masing-masing sepertimana ekonomi, pengurusan, psikologi, sosiologi dan lain-lain lagi. Namun ironinya, perbincangan berkaitan proses pembinaan teori keusahawanan wanita dikatakan masih bersifat pramatang. Kajian konseptual ini telah menggunakan kaedah kajian perpustakaan terhadap 95 artikel terpilih bersangkutan fenomena keusahawanan wanita dalam proses penciptaan teroka baharu yang terdiri daripada beberapa jurnal utama bidang keusahawanan wanita. Hasil kajian literatur ini mendapati, penglibatan usahawan wanita melalui perniagaan teroka baharu terbukti memberi impak positif dari sudut peningkatan peluang pekerjaan serta memperkembangkan inovasi produk baru dalam sesebuah negara. Kesinambungannya, kajian ini bertujuan untuk mendalami berkenaan fenomena keusahawanan wanita terutama berkenaan proses penciptaan teroka baharu memandangkan disiplin ini masih lagi bersifat pramatang terutama dalam proses pembangunan teori. Bersandarkan kepada teori Gartner, 1985, penyelidik memberi huraian yang jelas bagi menerangkan bagaimana keusahawanan wanita yang berlaku boleh dikaitkan dengan empat perspektif berbeza iaitu individu, persekitaran, organisasi yang ditubuhkan dan juga proses keusahawanan yang berlaku. Hasil huraian ini memberi gambaran dan sudut pandang yang khusus kepada usahawan wanita untuk memfokuskan kepada sisi yang memberi impak baik kepada perkembangan perniagaan teroka baru mereka.   AbstractThe discussion about emerging women’s new venture creation is not a new topic when traced back from the past literature. Previous researchers looked at various perspectives according to their respective disciplines, such as economics, management, psychology, sociology etc. Ironically, the discussion related to the women entrepreneurship theory-building process is said to be premature. This conceptual study has used the library research method on 95 selected articles concerning the phenomenon of women entrepreneurship in the new venture creation process consisting of several main women entrepreneurship journals. Based on the result from literature review, the involvement of women entrepreneurs through new venture businesses proved to have a positive impact in terms of employment opportunities and the development of new product innovations in a country. This study investigated the relevance of the women entrepreneurship phenomenon related to the new venture creation process as this discipline is still premature. Based on Gartner's theory, the researchers provide a clear description of how women’s entrepreneurs can be associated with four different perspectives: individuals, environments, organizations established, and entrepreneurial process. The results of this description can provide a specific overview and perspective for women entrepreneurs to focus on the side that has a positive impact on the development of their new venture business.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of mentor expectations on nascent entrepreneur’s venture creation and how this relationship strengthens/weakens when mediated by the sense of nothing to lose and entrepreneurial resilience. Design/methodology/approach The author nested the data from mentors and protégé entrepreneurs by using a questionnaire survey. Mentors were those individuals who were established entrepreneurs and involved in training to protégé entrepreneurs. Protégé entrepreneurs were those who were part of the cohorts in incubation centers for training and startup training. Findings Data revealed that it was unlikely to create a new venture when mentors displayed low expectations in protégé entrepreneurs. However, this relationship was positively mediated by the sense of nothing to lose and entrepreneurial resilience. Practical implications The findings have important implications on how mentor expectations can hinder protégé entrepreneurs’ venture creation and how it turns around when entrepreneurs display the ability of nothing to lose and resilience. Originality/value Mentorship from other experienced individuals has become essential to entrepreneurs and their fledgling ventures. Although there is an acknowledgment that mentoring improves an entrepreneur’s likelihood of success in a new venture, yet far too little the authors know about the degree of expectations in mentor-mentee relationships and new venture creation. This research connects those pieces of the puzzle and fills the gap.

PurposeThis paper brings in relevant entrepreneurial behavior theory to understand the ownership decisions founders make during the nascent stage of new venture creation, and how such decisions impact the viability of the firm.Design/methodology/approachThe authors examine the behavior and decision making of 137 lead founders during the nascent stage of new venture creation. Psychological ownership and environmental uncertainty are measured of lead founders when dividing up firm ownership among the founding team. Using a longitudinal approach, these nascent-stage decisions are then analyzed to understand the impact on the new venture one year later.FindingsCounter to prior research suggesting teams are better off with identical wages and ownership, the authors find such harmony (i.e. “kumbaya”) pursuit to be a detriment to new venture emergence. Specifically, this study finds that nascent ventures are better off with an unequal ownership split among the founding team members. These findings suggest that nascent firms with an unequal split are more likely to move beyond the nascent stage and launch a functional business.Research limitations/implicationsAlthough the results of this study offer a valuable contribution to lead founders and new businesses, the study looked at each startup independent of another and is therefore not able to draw any conclusions related to competitiveness.Practical implicationsLead founders and founding teams frequently divide ownership evenly among the founders. This paper shows that, while convenient, the decision to divide ownership equally can hamper a nascent firm as it moves toward the launch phase of the startup process. These results should motivate founders to think deeply regarding the ownership structure decision and, at the very least, consider the possible negative costs associated with the pursuit of founding team unity.Originality/valueWhile scholars have brought attention to the nascent stage, few have identified and analyzed the decisions that take place during this critical time of the new venture development process. Furthermore, even is less is known of the impact nascent decisions have on startup launch. This study sheds light on these areas.
