Two new species, Joeropsis denticulatus sp. nov. and Joeropsis semicircularis sp. nov. are reported from South Korea. Joeropsis denticulatus sp. nov. differs from its congeners by the following features: (1) whole body has chromatophores dorsally, although those in pereonite V occasionally are faint or lacking according to individuals; (2) lateral margins of the cephalon are smooth and narrowing anteriorly; (3) the distal end of the pseudorostrum is round; (4) maxillipedal palp article II has a mesial lobe bifid distally; and (5) basis of pereopods have serrated cuticular scales superiorly. Joeropsis semicircularis sp. nov. can be distinguishable from other Joeropsis species by the following characteristics: (1) the cephalon, pereonite IV, and pleotelson have dark brown chromatophores dorsally; (2) lateral margins of the cephalon are smooth and parallel each other; (3) the distal end of the pseudorostrum is round and slightly serrate; (4) flagellar article I of the antenna is swollen and semicircular-shaped; and (5) the pleotelson and uropods are serrated on lateral margins.

To date, 19 species of spiny lobsters from the genus Panulirus have been discovered, of which only P. japonicus, P. penicilatus, P. stimpsoni, and P. versicolor have been documented in South Korean waters. In this study, we aimed to identify and update the current list of spiny lobster species that inhabit South Korean waters based on the morphological features and the phylogenetic profile of cytochrome oxidase I (COI) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Spiny lobsters were collected from the southern and eastern coasts of Jeju Island, South Korea. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using neighbor-joining (NJ), maximum likelihood (ML), and Bayesian inference (BI) methods. The ML tree was used to determine the spiny lobster lineages, thereby clustering the 17 specimens collected in this study into clades A, B, C, and D, which were reciprocally monophyletic with P. japonicus, P. homarus homarus, P. longipes, and P. stimpsoni, respectively. These clades were also supported by morphological examinations. Interestingly, morphological variations, including the connected pleural and transverse groove at the third abdominal somite, were observed in four specimens that were genetically confirmed as P. japonicus. This finding is novel within the P. japonicus taxonomical reports. Additionally, this study updates the documentation of spiny lobsters inhabiting South Korean waters as P. longipes and P. homarus homarus were recorded for the first time in this region.

The present study describes five newly recorded modern benthic foraminiferal species from the subtidal zone near Jeju Island and East China Sea (Korea). The newly recorded species (Karrerulina conversa, Rotaliammina trumbulli, Vertebralina striata, Pegidia dubia and Amphistegina radiata) belong to five families (Prolixoplectidae, Trochamminidae, Fischerinidae, Pegidiidae and Amphisteginidae), three orders (Lituolida, Miliolida and Rotaliida) and two classes (Globothalamea and Tubothalamea). All these five genera (Karrerulina, Rotaliammina, Vertebralina, Pegidia and Amphistegina) were also reported for the first time from Korean waters. Most of the examined specimens were highly consistent morphologically with previous records from southern China and Japan. Additionally, Amphistegina is one of the symbiont-bearing larger benthic foraminifera, known to be mainly distributed in tropical to warm subtropical waters. This study contributes to the expansion of data on the recent foraminiferal species diversity in Korean waters.

We report the occurrence of the genus Bicorniphontodes George, Glatzel & Schröder, 2019 in Korean waters, with descriptions of three new species: Bicorniphontodes lacuna sp. nov., B. comptus sp. nov., and B. huysi sp. nov. Morphology analysis was carried out to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationships of Bicorniphontodes species, including the three new species. Parsimony analysis based on 41 characters revealed that the three new species are clustered together as a monophyletic clade, of which B. horstgeorgei (George & Gheerardyn, 2015) is a sister species. The monophyletic status of three new species was supported by five synapomorphies, such as the micro-morphological conditions of the exopodal segments of the first leg, coxae of the second to fourth legs, exopod of the fifth leg in the female and baseoendopod of the fifth leg in the male, and the maxillular endopod represented by two setae. These three species can be easily distinguished based on the morphology of the rostrum, cephalothoracic processes, female genital double-somite, caudal rami, and second endopodal segment of the third leg in the male. The taxonomic position of B. bicornis sensu Kim, 2013 in Korean fauna was reevaluated based on the newly collected material from Udo Islet near Jeju Island; this resulted in a synonym of B. huysi sp. nov.

Benthic harpacticoids were collected from Korean waters. Two species were identified as members of the genus Longipedia Claus, 1863, because they have an extremely elongated distal segment of the P2 endopod. Longipedia koreana sp. nov. is morphologically most closely related to L. nichollsi Wells, 1980 and L. scotti Sars, 1903, but it can clearly be distinguished from both species based on the following morphological characteristics: P1 coxa with strong spinules near the outer margin and the distal element being much bigger than the proximal elements, P2 coxa with a small inner seta on the anterior surface, P4 exopod first segment without an inner element, and the P5 with a rectangular exopod (more than 3.5 times as long as wide). L. ulleungensis sp. nov. is similar to L. brevispinosa Gurney, 1927, L. spinulosa Itô, 1981, and L. weberi Scott A., 1909. However, L. ulleungensis sp. nov. is characterized by the P2 coxa with a reduced inner seta, the P4 exopod second segment without an inner seta, and the anal operculum with a long median projection, a single spine, and a group of outer spines on each side. In a molecular analysis using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) genes, the inter-specific variation was 22.525–23.102% and 1.325–1.382% of COI and 18S rRNA between the two new species, respectively. A key to the family Longipediidae is provided herein.

One specimen (38.3 mm SL) of Neoclinus lacunicola Fukao, 1980, belonging to the family Chaenopsidae, was first recorded from Ulleung Island, Korea (East Sea, otherwise known as the Sea of Japan) on 5 January 2021. This species was characterized by paired external pores of incomplete lateral line running from the upper margin of the opercle, seven pairs of supraorbital cirri arranged in two rows, occipital region with a pair of cirri, and 13 rays of pectoral fin. This species is morphologically similar to the Neoclinus toshimaensis Fukao, 1980, but differs in the number of cirri on the supraorbital (6–7 versus 9–11 cirri). This study documents the first report of N. lacunicola in Korean waters and proposes the new Korean name of ‘eol-lug-bi-neul-be-do-la-chi’ for the species. For the confirmation of the identity of the species, a partial gene sequence of the mt COI (570 bp) of N. lacunicola was obtained for the first time.

A species-specific quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay using environmental DNA (eDNA) is a promising tool for both qualitative and quantitative analyses of target species directly from water samples. Despite its reliability, an eDNA-based qPCR assay pipeline has not yet developed to monitor salmon species inhabiting Korean waters, which have been rapidly decreasing. We designed species-specific primers for four Oncorhynchus species inhabiting the eastern coastal waters along the Korean Peninsula. These include primers for two native species (Oncorhynchus keta and O. masou) and two that were introduced (O. mykiss and O. kisutch). The limit of detection and limit of quantification for the four qPCR assays ranged from 4.11 to 10.38 copies and from 30 to 81 copies, respectively, indicating a high sensitivity and specificity across all four species. Following optimization, the qPCR assays were used for the quantitative analyses of the four Oncorhynchus species in the Yangyangnamdae River during the spawning and non-spawning seasons in the year 2019–2020, one of the main rivers where salmon migrate during the spawning season in Korea. The raw copy numbers in all of the examined samples were normalized by PCR inhibition rates to standardize and compare with other studies. Among the four Oncorhynchus species examined, the eDNA concentration of O. keta increased significantly (63.60-fold, p < 0.0001) during the spawning season (November) compared with that in the non-spawning season (March), suggesting that O. keta is the main salmon species migrating through the Yangyangnamdae River. In contrast, we did not detect any differences in eDNA concentration for the other three Oncorhynchus species between the spawning and non-spawning seasons, indicating that their presence does not alter during the year. Their eDNA concentration is also relatively low compared to O. keta, which suggests that small numbers of these three species are present in the river. Overall, these newly developed qPCR assays represent useful monitoring tools for the management of four salmon species in Korean waters.

The genus Oxyrrhis is a heterotrophic dinoflagellate found in diverse marine environments. Oxyrrhis spp. have received attention owing to their ecological and industrial importance, high lipid contents, and docosahexaenoic acid formation. To the best of our knowledge, contrary to O. marina, ecophysiological characterization studies on O. maritima have not yet been reported. Therefore, we investigated the taxonomy and ecophysiology of four strains of O. marina from coastal waters and two strains of O. maritima from the littoral tidepool waters of Korea. Based on phylogenetic trees constructed using internal transcribed spacer ribosomal DNA (ITS rDNA) and SSU rDNA of dinoflagellates, the clade of all four O. marina strains was divergent from that of the two O. maritima strains. We measured the growth rates of both species at various water temperatures (10–36 °C), salinities (5–90), and light intensities (0–100 µE·m−2·s−1). The lowest (O. marina and O. maritima: 10 °C) and highest temperatures (O. marina: <35 °C, O. maritima: >35 °C) revealed that O. maritima has more tolerance to high salinity. This study provides a basis for understanding the ecophysiology of O. marina and O. maritima and their population dynamics in marine ecosystems.
