Guttation is the process of exudating droplets from the tips, edges, and adaxial and abaxial surfaces of the undamaged leaves. Guttation is a natural and spontaneous biological phenomenon that occurs in a wide variety of plants. Despite its generally positive effect on plant growth, many aspects of this cryptic process are unknown. In this study, the guttation phenomenon characteristic of bamboo shoots and the anatomical feature of these and culm sheaths were systematically observed. In addition, the water transport pathway and the compounds in guttation droplets of bamboo shoots were analyzed, and the effect of bamboo sheaths’ guttation on the growth of bamboo shoots was assessed. The results revealed that bamboo shoots began to exudate liquid in the evening through to the next morning, during which period the volume of guttation liquid gradually increases and then decreases before sunrise. Many vascular bundles are in bamboo shoots and culm sheaths to facilitate this water transport. The exudate liquid contains organic acids, sugars, and hormones, among other compounds. Our findings suggest that the regular guttation of the sheath blade is crucial to maintain the normal growth of bamboo shoots.

Objective: The development of ciliochoroidal effusions and secondary acute angle-closure crisis (AACC) is an uncommon side effect of topiramate, a common antiepileptic now FDA-approved for migraine prophylaxis. The mechanisms that underlie the development of ciliochoroidal effusions after topiramate use remain unclear. Materials and Methods: Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) was also performed in all participants after stopping topiramate. Results: Six patient cases are presented with medication-induced AACC following the initiation or escalation of topiramate. Ciliochoroidal effusions were confirmed by gray-scale sonography in all patients at presentation. The images revealed either plateau iris configuration or atypical plateau iris configuration. Plateau iris configuration is defined by presence of an anteriorly rotated ciliary body processes and an absent posterior sulcus. Atypical plateau iris configuration refers to when the iris inserts directly into the ciliary body face. This case series, of medication-induced angle-closure crisis, suggests that plateau iris configuration is a shared anatomical feature in the development of topiramate-induced ciliochoroidal effusions.

AbstractWe test the hypothesis that a specific anatomical feature, the dental malocclusion associated with reduced dental wear, causes languages to adapt by relying more heavily on labiodental consonants. In contrast to previous work on this topic, we adopt a usage-based approach that directly examines the relative frequency of such labiodental sounds within phonetically transcribed word lists and texts from thousands of languages. Labiodentals are shown to be very infrequent in the languages of hunter gatherers, who tend to have edge-to-edge bites as opposed to the overbite and overjet observed in populations that consume softer diets and rely heavily on eating utensils. This strong tendency is evident after controlling for Galton’s problem via multiple methods including frequentist and Bayesian linear mixed modeling. Additionally, we discuss data from Amazonian hunter gatherers with edge-to-edge bites. The languages of these populations are shown not to use labiodentals frequently, or to have only recently begun doing so. Finally, we analyze the speech of English speakers with varying bite types, demonstrating how the sounds used by individuals reflect the same phenomenon. The diverse findings converge on the same conclusion: speech adapts to anatomical differences within and across populations.

Rays are an important anatomical feature in tree species identification. They are found in certain proportions in trees, which vary for each tree. In this study, the U-Net model is adopted for the first time to detect wood rays. A dataset is created with images taken from the wood database. The resolution of microscopic wood images in tangential section is 640×400. The input image for training is divided into 32×32 image blocks. Each pixel in the dataset is labeled as belonging to the ray or the background. Then, the dataset is increased by applying scale, rotation, salt-and-pepper noise, circular mean filter, and gauss filter. The U-Net network created for ray segmentation is trained using the Adam optimization algorithm. The experimental results show that the ray segmentation accuracy in testing is 96.3%.

Abstract An aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) is a rare arterial anomaly. Although a few cases of total endovascular repair for the ARSA aneurysm have been previously reported, anatomical limitations and the possibility of endoleaks remained. In this case, we created 4 holes on the stent graft for each cervical branch, with reference to the preoperative computed tomography findings. This approach might enable us to repair all types of thoracic aortic aneurysms with ARSA with each anatomical feature.
