Low pressure fluid transport (1) applications often require low and precise volumetric flow rates (2) including low leakage to reduce additional costly and complex sensors. A peristaltic pump design (3) was realized, with the fluid’s flexible transport channel formed by a solid cavity and a wobbling plate comprising a rigid and a soft layer (4). In operation, the wobbling plate is driven externally by an electric motor, hence, the soft layer is contracted and unloaded (5) during pump-cycles transporting fluid from low to high pressure sides. A thorough characterization of the pump system is required to design and dimension the components of the peristaltic pump. To capture all these parameters and their dependencies on various operation-states, often complex and long-lasting dynamic 3D FE-simulations are required. We present, here, a holistic design methodology (6) including analytical as well as numerical calculations, and experimental validations for a peristaltic pump with certain specifications of flow-rate range, maximum pressures, and temperatures. An experimental material selection process is established and material data of candidate materials (7) (liquid silicone rubber, acrylonitrile rubber, thermoplastic-elastomer) are directly applied to predict the required drive torque. For the prediction, a semi-physical, analytical model was derived and validated by characterizing the pump prototype.

The magnetic structure of Wiegand wires cannot be evaluated using conventional magnetization hysteresis curves. We analyzed the magnetization reversal of a Wiegand wire by measuring the first-order reversal curves (FORCs). A FeCoV Wiegand wire with a magnetically soft outer layer and a hard magnetic core was used in this study. The magnetization reversal of the soft and hard regions in the wire was identified in the FORC diagrams. The magnetization reversal of the dominantly irreversible process of the soft layer and the magnetic intermediate region between the soft and hard regions was clarified.

Acoustic oscillation provides useful information regarding the interfacial coupling between metal transducer layers and substrate materials. The interfacial coupling can be significantly reduced by a mechanically soft layer between the transducer and substrate. However, preserving a thin, soft layer at the interface during fabrication is often challenging. In this study, we demonstrate that an amorphous CoB alloy on top of a sapphire substrate can substantially amplify acoustic oscillations. By analyzing the attenuation of acoustic oscillations, we show that a thin, soft layer with a thickness of >2 ± 1 Å exists at the interface. The intermediate layer at the interface is further verified by investigating heat transport. By analyzing the slow decrease of the temperature of the transducer layer, we determine a thermal conductance of 35 ± 5 MW m−2 K−1 at the transducer/substrate interface. This low value supports the existence of a thin, soft layer at the interface. Our results demonstrate that an amorphous metal with B alloying effectively preserves the soft nature at the interface and detects the acoustic propagation and heat transport across it.

Simulation by the finite element of tensile deformation of the titanium-aluminum composite D20 - AD1 - VT6S was carried out. The relative thickness of the soft layer AD1 was constant, and the parameters of the wave profile of the welded joint varied. An increase in the ratio of the amplitude to the step of the wave up to 0.5 leads to an increase in effort by 4-5%. It was compared with the force in a specimen with a flat boundary at comparable stretches. Plastic deformation is localized mainly near free surfaces.

Watukumpul is an area that is prone to landslides, so determining the soft layer thickness is very important to identify the landslide potential. The soft layer thickness can be estimated using microtremor signal measurements which analyzed using the Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR). In this study,we measured microtremor signal of 33location around Watukumpul, Pemalang, Central Java area to determine soft layer thickness. Micretremor signal was analyzed based on theHVSR method using Geopsy software and follow the standard of the Sesame Europan Project. The results of the HVSR method are the HVSR curve that fulfills the reliable curve standard. HVSR curve shows that the dominant frequency of soft layer ranges from 1.36 – 7.62 Hz and the amplification values ranges from 9.00 – 41.45. The soft layer thickness value in the study area ranges from 17.58 - 103.60 meters. The high landslide potential area are located at W7, W8, W18, W30 and W32 where has thin soft layer and high soil slope.
