This study highlights English-Indonesian translation of verbal abuse in the novel The Dark Heroine: Dinner With A Vampire by Abigail Gibbs. The novel is a thrilling paranormal set in London, published by HarperCollins in 2012. The novel was the New York Times Best Seller and also dubbed as “The Sexiest Romance You’ll Read This Year”. The purpose of this study is to find out the translation technique that the translator used in translating verbal abuse. This study is descriptive and qualitative in nature by doing an analysis of documents and FGD (Focus Group Discussion). The findings of the study showed that 12 techniques were used by the translator to translate the verbal abuse in The Dark Heroine: Dinner With A Vampire; established equivalent, variation, explicitation, pure borrowing, implicitation, modulation, compensation, reduction, generalization, deletion, reduction, paraphrase, and transposition.

This research was a follow-up research from some previous research which had discussed some imperative speech act, but it had not deeply discussed ordering speech act. The research aimed to find out the impact of translation techniques on shifting the meaning of ordering speech. The data were sentences which accommodate ordering speech act taken from the novel “Christ the Lord out of Egypt” and its translation in Indonesian taken from the novel “Kristus Tuhan Meninggalkan Mesir”. The data collected through document analysis, questionnaire, and forum group discussion (FGD). From the findings, there were 15 types of translation techniques which were used in translating, namely, established equivalent, variation, addition, implicit, explicit, adaptation, modulation, pure borrowing, generalization, particularization, transposition, reduction, paraphrase, discursive creation, and naturalized borrowing. The result indicates that the translation techniques that cause shifting meaning of ordering speech act are the addition, reduction, and discursive creation.

<div class="WordSection1"><p>Indonesia’s domestic rice price has experienced a significantly increase when the global price of corps commodity decline. An increase in rice price from 2012 to 2015 had reached 30%. The most acute occurred on the first quarter of 2014 until the last quarter of 2015 that overtake 17%. Increase in domestic rice price will affect mostly to consumer welfare in Indonesia, because as we know, rice is one of the staple food for Indonesian people whom has inelastic demand.</p><p>This paper uses National Socio-economics Survey (SUSENAS) year 2012 and 2014. We revisit McCulloch (2008) and used SUSENAS 2004 to calculate amount of agricultural household in Indonesia. The result of the author’s calculation there was a diminution from 46% in 2004 to 37% in 2012 on the amount of agricultural households in Indonesia. From the total of agricultural household, 19% are the rice-farming households. Surprisingly, 90% of Indonesia’s households are the net consumer whom bought the rice from the market. The result shows that 15% of the total net consumers are the rice-farming households and 10% of net consumers are poor households. This means that if there is an increasing in the price of rice, automatically this household will get influenced include the rice farmers who in fact is also as the rice producers.</p><p>The authors conduct simulation to see the effect of the increase in the rice price towards consumptions that ultimately will alter poverty incidence. Simulation that has been performed uses equivalent variation method to calculate a changing on household consumption as the result of an increase in the rice prices. The result from the simulation of a increase in rice price shows that households in every quantile is affected, ceteris paribus. Authors also including <em>Raskin </em>as compensated consumption when there is an increase in rice prices. These findings suggest that, rice price should be stabilized in order to maintain the society’s welfare and government should establish pro-poor policy especially for food security to prevent the increasing of poverty incidence.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Keywords: rice price, poverty, rice farmer, equivalent variation</p><p>JEL Code: I32, Q18</p></div>

We show that the Hicksian welfare measures of compensating variation and equivalent variation coincide if one of them is evaluated at a compensated income. The measures are nondecreasing in income if the varied attribute and income are complementary, and indirect utility is concave in income. Income monotonicity implies the normative endowment effect, where the equivalent variation exceeds the compensating variation. We provide sufficient conditions for the normative endowment effect and discuss empirical implications. In the global absence of a strict (anti-) endowment effect, both Hicksian welfare measures must be independent of income and the indirect utility function additively separable in income. People's common propensity to value losses more than otherwise commensurate gains, gives rise to different values of positive and negative changes in entitlements depending on the measure used to assess them. A major implication of the differing valuations is a need to choose an appropriate measure for particular changes. The appropriate choice of measure appears to turn on the reference state that people use to weigh the values of gains and losses: the distinction between the compensating and equivalent variation measures of values. If people view the present state as expected and normal, then the compensating measures apply; the equivalent variation measures are appropriate if they view the changed state as the reference.
