Parental Mediation of Cell Phone Use and Adolescent Autonomy

Adolescents’ cell phone use occurs during significant developmental shifts in parent–adolescent relationships, as adolescents’ drives for independence can conflict with parents’ desires for connection. This study examines parental mediation of cell phone use within an interpersonal and family communication framework. Previous mediation research has not examined connections with social penetration theory, uncertainty reduction theory, relational dialectics theory, and communication privacy management, each of which has conceptual links to parental mediation. Cell phone mediation reflects the broader phenomenon of disclosure in interpersonal relationships. The extent to which individuals disclose information is influenced by personal desires for autonomy and connection, privacy and intimacy, which are components of interpersonal and family communication theories. This study explores the notion that families develop norms and expectations about cell phones that might influence parental mediation. Results indicate that perceptions of parent–child relationships and family expectations for cell phone use both significantly influence mediation.

Attached to Technology: Exploring Young Adults’ Attachments to Parents, Partners, and Phones

Cell phone use has become a mainstay in the lives of young adults, with 93% of Millennials owning a smartphone. With the increased accessibility of technology, individuals’ cell phone use may lead to personal distress in various facets of life. Specifically, problematic cell phone use may be the result of attempts to fulfill emotional needs or avoid connection with others. The present study used a systemic, attachment-based lens to investigate the roles of parental and romantic attachment in problematic cell phone use. A sample of 479 young adults (ages 18–26) completed an online survey gauging their cell phone use and attachment styles. Mediation analyzes were run to determine if adult attachment mediates the relationship from parental attachment to problematic cell phone use. The results found that attachment anxiety mediates the relationship between communication and alienation subscales for mother and alienation only for father to problematic cell phone use. Clinical implications are discussed with results informing assessment, prevention, and intervention efforts for individuals, families, and couples.

Cell Phone Related Violations and Motorcycle Accidents: A Bayesian Approach

The effects of cell phone use on motorcycle riders’ behaviour are studied in smart city, Bhubaneswar, capital of state odisha, India. Most of motorcycle riders confess using cell phone devices while driving. Moreover, relationship between near miss and accidents has been found with the use of cell phone, reflecting a risk factor for motorcycle riders.“ This study examines the relationship between such type of behaviours, comprising calling and manipulating the screen, and the frequency of near miss and actual accidents among motorcycle riders. We conducted a web based survey measuring cell phone-specific violations, human errors, near miss and accident to motorcycle riders (N=289; age range; 18-60). We hypothesized that the relationship between cell phone use and near miss would be explained by an increase in the number of human errors committed, thus increasing the likelihood of being involved in near miss. Moreover, we hypothesized that near miss will predict actual accidents. Outcomes of path analysis showed that cell phone-specific violations predicted accidents throughout their consecutive effects on human errors and near miss only in the subsample of men. These findings offer an explanation of how cell phone use contributes to increase the likelihood of getting involved in near miss and actual accidents. The current study builds a path model explaining how cell phone-specific violations lead to more near miss among motorcycle riders.

Cell phone availability and usage for mobile health and intervention delivery to persons living with HIV in a low-resource setting. (Preprint)

BACKGROUND HIV/AIDS is now a chronic illness due to effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) and involves routine follow-up care, including regular physical visits to the clinic. In the recent past, and in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been increased need for virtual care and intervention delivery, a modality known as mHealth, which includes cell phone-delivered services OBJECTIVE Here we describe cell phone use and its relationship with alcohol use in a cohort of persons with HIV (PWH) and latent tuberculosis (TB). METHODS We performed a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from a cohort of PWH and latent TB in HIV care in south-western Uganda. We estimated proportions of cell phone and text message use and evaluated their associations with alcohol use, a common modifiable behaviour among PWH. Cell phone use (primary outcome) was defined as owning a cell phone that is turned on at least half of the day. Any alcohol use was defined as any self-reported alcohol use in the prior 3 months, and/or phosphatidylethanol (an alcohol biomarker) ≥8 ng/ml. RESULTS A total of 300 participants were included in the analysis, with a median age of 40 years; 48.7% were male. Majority (89.0%) of participants had access to a phone and of these 9.7% shared the phone with someone else. Eighty-seven percent owned a cell phone that is turned on at least half of the time; the majority (89.7%) rarely or never sent text messages, and over two-thirds (66.9%) rarely or never received text messages. 71.3% had any alcohol use. In adjusted analyses, any alcohol use was not significantly associated with cell phone use (adjusted OR [aOR]: 0.48, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.18-1.25, p-value=.13), or sending (aOR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.28-2.37, p-value=.71) or receiving (aOR: 1.31, 95% CI: 0.70-2.47, p-value= .40) of text messages. CONCLUSIONS There is hope that mHealth interventions in this population can be carried out using cell phones due to their popularity; however, the interventions may need to employ methods that do not rely on the sending and receiving of text messages only. Research on the Impact of mHealth Apps on the Primary Healthcare Professionals in Patient Care

The goal of this study was to develop and use a questionnaire in order to analyse the effects of eHealth apps on patient care using Jordanian population. A two-stage cross-sectional research was conducted. A questionnaire was developed in the beginning to evaluate its consistency and legitimacy using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, a multitrait connection atmosphere; the multivariate technique is component examination. In the study’s another phase, correlation and regression are used to determine the influence of eHealth apps on patient care. The five major axes of the final surveys were healthcare efficiency, teaching, notices, consultation, and follow-up. Individuals from diverse demographic aspects, such as gender, age, job experience, and education level, have no differing perspectives on cell phone use in their amenities, according to a staff’s viewpoint evaluation. In general, mobile health applications had a good influence on health services and healthcare, which would be an important setting for the operative use of mobile headphones in public policy; such a background would affect in workers’ intents to practice and adopt mHealth.

Effect of cell phone use on salivary components; a review of literature

Mobile phones have been increasingly used in the past decade and have become a cultural instrument. There is a great concern over the harmful effects of electromagnetic and radiofrequency waves as well as microwaves generated by mobile phones and their telecommunication stations on health. The saliva plays an important role in preserving oral homeostasis as the first defensive line against the microbial invasion which protects oral mucosa mechanically and immunologically. A search was run in Pub med, Goggle Scholar, Medline, and Web of Science databases using the following keywords: cell phone, mobile phone, antioxidant profile, saliva, oxidative stress, interleukin, and inflammation. Sixty-five published articles were identified. Studies on the use of cell phones as educational aids, the use of immune histochemistry on salivary glands, or the evaluation of saliva in individuals with specific conditions, such as the use of orthodontic brackets, were excluded. In addition, duplicate articles are eliminated, and finally, 14 articles were included in the present study. Nowadays mobile phone is very popular, causing concern about the effect it has on people’s health. Parotid salivary glands are in close contact with a cell phone while talking with the phone and the possibility of being affected by them; so this study was designed to investigate the effect of cell phone use on salivary components.

Can Prenatal and Postnatal Cell Phone Exposure Increase Adverse Maternal, Infant and Child Outcomes?

Objective To determine the association between maternal mobile phone use and adverse outcomes in infants, children, and mothers. Method In March 202, we conducted a search on the MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus databases. Data extraction and an assessment of the quality of the studies were performed by two authors. The quality of the studies was assessed using the checklist of the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Results Studies assessing behavioral problems in infants aged 6 to 18 months reported null findings. However, an increased risk of emotional and behavioral disorders was observed in children aged between 7 and 11 years whose mothers had been exposed to cell phones. The findings regarding the association between maternal cell phone exposure and adverse outcomes in children aged 3 to 5 are controversial. A study found a significant association between the call time (p = 0.002) or the history of mobile phone use (in months) and speech disorders in the children (p = 0.003). However, another study found that maternal cell phone use during pregnancy was not significantly associated with child psychomotor and mental developments. Inconclusive results were observed about the adverse outcomes in fetuses, such as fetal growth restriction or t scores for birth weight in cell phone users as opposed to non-users. On the contrary, the children of mothers who were cell phone users had a lower risk of scoring low on motor skills. Similar results were observed regarding the adverse outcomes of cell phone use in infants, such as fetal growth restriction or low birth weight, and the risk of preeclampsia was lower among subjects with medium and high cell phone exposure, as opposed to those with low exposure. Conclusion Studies on behavioral problems have reported different postnatal results, such as null findings among infants and a positive association in children.
