The level of sustainability of a modern society is associated with the ability to manage unwanted stressors from the environment, regardless of origin. Torrential floods represent a hydrological hazard whose frequency and intensity have increased in recent years, mainly due to climate changes. In order to effectively manage the risks of torrents, it is necessary to apply early warning systems, since torrential floods are formed very quickly, especially on the watercourses of a small catchment area. The early warning system is part of a comprehensive torrential flood risk management system, seen as a technical entity for the collection, transformation, and rapid distribution of data. Modern early warning systems are the successors of rudimentary methods used in the past, and they are based on ICT and mobile applications developed in relation to the requirements of end users. The chapter presents an analysis of characteristic examples of the use. The main conclusion of the chapter indicates the need to implement early warning systems in national emergency management structures.

The Aravalli range is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Many lakes are sustained by the streams generated from the Aravalli range. In the last few years, hill systems are facing changes affecting the catchment of water bodies. Many waterbodies that were earlier able to provide water in peak summers are now dried up before the summer. The study aims to analyse land use land cover change in the Aravalli range on Sambhar Lake. Sambhar Lake is the largest inland saltwater lake in India and was selected as a “Ramsar Site.” A catchment area of the lake is delineated, and micro-watersheds are selected for detailed analysis. A primary survey is done to know the impacts and causes of changes in the lake. The study indicates significant green cover changes in three seasons over the years. Because of the loss in green cover, the soil is losing its moisture, affecting the cropping pattern and agriculture production in the area. Factors causing the drying of the lake are affecting its ecosystem and the number of birds coming to it.

As a safety-net medical center that serves many underserved communities, Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia (EMCP) faces many challenges in providing healthcare to its communities. To improve those services, EMCP has released a new IT healthcare portal (app). This chapter describes some of the promises and challenges EMCP is currently facing in their attempts to convince communities in its catchment area to adopt that healthcare portal. The challenges are discussed in the contexts of poor social determinants of health (SDOH), unique social factors, as well as the importance of managing community trust in EMCP within the broader contexts of underserved communities of which the new portal is only part of the story. This is not a typical case of IT adoption. The challenges at hand are not only technical but to a large degree social, dealing in part with issues of cultural diversity, perceived lack of respect, and poor health literacy.

PURPOSE The University of Kansas Cancer Center (KU Cancer Center) recently developed a data warehouse to Organize and Prioritize Trends to Inform KU Cancer Center (OPTIK). The OPTIK database aggregates and standardizes data collected across the bistate catchment area served by the KU Cancer Center. To improve the usability of the OPTIK database, we developed shinyOPTIK, a user-friendly, interactive web application for visualizing cancer risk factor and mortality rate data across the KU Cancer Center Catchment area. METHODS Data in the OPTIK database were first consolidated at the county level across the KU Cancer Center catchment area. Next, the shinyOPTIK development team met with the KU Cancer Center leadership to discuss the needs and priorities of the shinyOPTIK web application. shinyOPTIK was developed under the R Shiny framework and consists of a user interface (ui.R) and a web server (server.R). At present, s hinyOPTIK can be used to generate county-level geographical heatmaps; bar plots of demographic, screening, and risk factors; and line plots to visualize temporal trends at different Rural-Urban Continuum Codes (RUCCs), rural-urban status, metropolitan, or county levels across the KU Cancer Center catchment area. RESULTS Two examples, adult obesity prevalence and lung cancer mortality, are presented to illustrate how researchers can use shinyOPTIK. Each example is accompanied by post hoc visualizations to help explain key observations in terms of rural-urban disparities. CONCLUSION Although shinyOPTIK was developed to improve understanding of spatial and temporal trends across the population served by the KU Cancer Center, our hope is that the description of the steps involved in the creation of this tool along with open-source code for our application provided herein will serve as a guide for other research centers in the development of similar tools.

Abstract Although in 2019 the local government of Tegal city Indonesia had constructed a retention basin at drainage system of Siwatu, Tegal Barat, Tegal city with a catchment area of 226 ha, the areas around the system still experienced flood and inundation. This study belonged to a descriptive qualitative research aimed to evaluate the performances of Siwatu drainage system and Tegalsari retention basin. Data of the study included field data and technical data from institutions. Based on the 15-year rainfall data (2014 – 2018) from Pemali - Comal PSDA Office, Central Java Province, Indonesia, the statistical parameters of Cs: 0.0027, Ck: 1.904, Sd: 15.91, Cv: 0.144 were obtained and so Gumbel method distribution was applied in the study, the return period rainfall of 10 years was 138 mm, the flood discharge for Qr.10 years was 9.63 m3/sec., the addition of long storage was 8×2,50×500 m, and the combination of pump addition was of 1 m3/sec. with the long storage of 8×2.00×500 m. By implementing one of the alternative choices, either flood or inundation could be resolved.
