Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) systems were specified by 3GPP in release 13 as a low power wide area network (LPWAN) technology to operate with a very narrow bandwidth of 180 kHz only. Due to fragile radio signal operating conditions (where a signal is weaker than noise), NB-IoT channel status becomes highly complex. Therefore, an effective and low complexity channel estimation will perform a significant role in the receiver operation. The linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) scheme is very effective in estimating the channel but introduces massive complexity because of having complex matrix inversion. In this paper, we first derive the analytical model of the signal for long-term evolution (LTE)-based NB-IoT downlink systems and propose a reduced complexity LMMSE channel estimation for the downlink NB-IoT systems by applying singular value decomposition (SVD) technique along with partitioning the whole channel matrix into small submatrices. Furthermore, we apply the overlap banded technique to optimize the performance of the proposed channel estimator. As a result of exploiting several submatrices instead of a larger channel matrix, the operational complexity is significantly optimized. Lastly, we propose a polyphase filter structure for implementing the interpolation procedure instead of the conventional interpolation method to further optimize the performance and complexity of the proposed channel estimator further. The performance of the proposed technique has been justified by the mean square error (MSE), bit error rate (BER), and instantaneous throughput for the related signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The system complexity is verified by the number of complex multiplications used. Simulation evaluations indicate that with the sacrifice of negligible performance, the proposed modified LMMSE technique along with the proposed interpolation possesses a good balance between the performance and the system complexity that could help the proposed techniques to be applied successfully in the low complexity NB-IoT systems.

Abstract Pilot contamination is one of the main impairments in multi-cell massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. In order to improve the channel estimation in this context, we propose to use a semi-blind channel estimator based on the constant modulus algorithm (CMA). We consider an enhanced version of the CMA namely the Modified CMA (MCMA) which modifies the cost function of the CMA algorithm to the sum of cost functions for real and imaginary parts. Due to pilot contamination, the channel estimator may estimate the channel of a contaminating user instead of that of the user of interest (the user for which the Base Station wants to estimate the channel and then the data). To avoid this, we propose to scramble the users sequences before transmission. We consider different methods to perform unitary scrambling based on rotating the transmitted symbols (one Dimensional (1-D) scrambling) and using unitary matrices (two-Dimensional (2-D) scrambling). At the base station, the received sequence of the user of interest is descrambled leading to a better convergence of the channel estimator. We also consider the case where the Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) protocol is used. In this case, using scrambling leads to a significant gain in terms of BLock Error Rate (BLER) due to the change of the contaminating users data from one transmission to another induced by scrambling.

The channel of the broadband wireless communications system can be modeled as a dynamic sparse channel. Such a channel is difficult to reconstruct by using linear channel estimators that are normally employed for dense channels’ estimation because of their lack of capacity to use the inherent channel’s sparsity. This paper focuses on reconstructing this type of time-varying sparse channel by extending a recently proposed dynamic channel estimator. Specifically, variable step size’s mechanism and variable momentum parameter are incorporated into traditional Iterative Hard Thresholding-based channel estimator to develop the proposed Iterative Hard Thresholding with Combined Variable Step Size and Momentum (IHT-wCVSSnM)-based estimator. Computer simulations carried out in the context of a wireless communication system operating in a dynamic sparse channel, show that the proposed IHT-wCVSSnM-based estimator performs better than all the other estimators significantly. However, the computational complexity cost of the proposed estimator is slightly higher than the closely performing channel estimator. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity cost of the proposed estimator could be compromised in a situation where the system’s performance is of higher priority when compared with the computational complexity cost.
