Multiuser Detection (MUD) is quite challenging in uplink grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access wireless communication networks in which users sporadically transmit data. The reason for this is that the base station (BS) must perform detection of both multiuser activity and user signals concurrently, because knowledge of user activity status is not available at the BS. In this paper, a new multiuser detector, named the Forward-Reverse Orthogonal Matching Pursuit–Union–Subspace pursuit (FROMPUS)-based MUD, is proposed. The detector takes advantage of the concept of an initial support set. This serves as initial knowledge that is then employed in the reconstruction of active users’ signals. In addition, the detector uses the “serial-include” technique of incorporating a likely support set element candidates and a reliability testing procedure in which the most prominent elements of the support set are selected. To assess the performance of the proposed detector, computer simulations are performed. The results obtained for various parameter settings show that the FROMPUS performs better than any of the other five detectors considered in this paper. However, this excellent performance comes with a slightly higher computational complexity cost. Nonetheless, the cost is inconsequential, since the detector operates at the BS where complexity is of low priority in comparison to performance.

Malaysian palm oil mills have lagged behind in the adoption of advanced milling technologies, both to support productivity growth as well as meet sustainable development goals. Using primary data from a simple random sample of 54 mills, this study sought to examine the factors explaining the adoption of advanced milling technologies. The results from the logit regressions deployed show that top management support and mill size act as key drivers of new technology adoption. Importantly, organizational factors were more critical in the adoption of advanced milling technologies than technological and environmental factors. However, financial support and resources, technical skills, complexity, cost, and government support produced negative coefficients among the non-adopters. The results should help mill owners, managers, and policymakers to remove the barriers facing the non-adopters, and to create effective strategies to stimulate the adoption of advanced milling technologies.

Abstract Beamforming design is a crucial stage in millimeter-wave systems with massive antenna arrays. We propose a deep learning network for the design of the precoder and combiner in hybrid architectures. The proposed network employs a parametric rectified linear unit (PReLU) activation function which improves model accuracy with almost no complexity cost compared to other functions. The proposed network accepts practical channel estimation input and can be trained to enhance spectral efficiency considering the hardware limitation of the hybrid design. Simulation shows that the proposed network achieves small performance improvement when compared to the same network with the ReLU activation function.

Abstract A new type of microwave source of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasmas, presented earlier by the authors, has both the characteristics of a dielectric barrier discharge (in terms of the configuration and low gas temperature) and an ability to form a “clean” plasma jet like a classical microwave plasma torch. However, the need to use a circulator leads to a significant increase in complexity, cost and weight of the installation as a whole. The basis of the presented plasma source is a three-decibel waveguide bridge with connection through a narrow wall. Both output arms of the bridge are loaded on identical short-circuited segments of waveguides. The discharge tube passes across the waveguides at a distance of a quarter of the wavelength from the short circuit. Since the output arms of the bridge are always loaded symmetrically, the generator’s power which is reflected from the short circuits or not be absorbed in the microwave discharge, enters the decoupled arm of the bridge that is connected to the matched load. Thus, the magnetron is protected from the reflected wave without the need for an expensive circulator, in any case.

Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) is a relatively recent advancement in the field of privacy-preserving technologies. FHE allows for the arbitrary depth computation of both addition and multiplication, and thus the application of abelian/polynomial equations, like those found in deep learning algorithms. This project investigates how FHE with deep learning can be used at scale toward accurate sequence prediction, with a relatively low time complexity, the problems that such a system incurs, and mitigations/solutions for such problems. In addition, we discuss how this could have an impact on the future of data privacy and how it can enable data sharing across various actors in the agri-food supply chain, hence allowing the development of machine learning-based systems. Finally, we find that although FHE incurs a high spatial complexity cost, the run time is within expected reasonable bounds, while allowing for absolutely private predictions to be made, in our case for milk yield prediction with a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 12.4% and an accuracy of 87.6% on average.

A new DC fault current limiter (FCL)-based circuit breaker (CB) for DC microgrid (MG) clusters is proposed in this paper. The analytical expressions of the DC fault current of a bidirectional interlink DC/DC converter in the interconnection line of two nearby DC MGs are analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, a DC fault clearing solution (based on using a DC FCL in series with a DC circuit breaker) is proposed. This structure offers low complexity, cost, and power losses. To assess the performance of the proposed method, time-domain simulation studies are carried out on a test DC MG cluster in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. The results of the proposed analytical expressions are compared with simulation results. The obtained results verify the analytical expression of the fault current and prove the effectiveness of the proposed DC fault current limiting and clearing strategy.

Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is a very useful method for patients with diabetes to maintain glycaemic control. Different types of barriers in glucometer use of diabetic patients include the high cost of strips, pain, lack of knowledge and motivation, need of assistance and lack of inventory supplies of glucometer. The purpose of the study was to access the prevalence of different types of barriers to the use of glucometer in diabetic patients. A prospective observational study involving 150 diabetic patients was conducted at a Dakshina Kannada from January 2021 to June 2021. The study was conducted among patients of both gender having Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes mellitus. A total of 150 patients participated in our study qualifying the inclusion criteria. The main factors influencing the glucometer use was related to its cost, pain, lack of knowledge and supply. The barriers found were mainly the cost of the strips, fear for needles, pain, lack of knowledge and motivation, need of assistance and lack of inventory supplies of glucometer. Participants insight to the purpose of glucometer use, complexity, cost, pain related to glucometer as well as educating, catering knowledge and motivation were the key factors taken care by the health care professionals while advising the patients having diabetes mellitus with SMBG. The evolution of optical fiber technology has revolutionized a variety of fields, from optical transmission to environmental monitoring and biomedicine, given their unique properties and versatility. For biosensing purposes, the light guided in the fiber core is exposed to the surrounding media where the analytes of interest are detected by different techniques, according to the optical fiber configuration and biofunctionalization strategy employed. These configurations differ in manufacturing complexity, cost and overall performance. The biofunctionalization strategies can be carried out directly on bare fibers or on coated fibers. The former relies on interactions between the evanescent wave (EW) of the fiber and the analyte of interest, whereas the latter can comprise plasmonic methods such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR), both originating from the interaction between light and metal surface electrons. This review presents the basics of optical fiber immunosensors for a broad audience as well as the more recent research trends on the topic. Several optical fiber configurations used for biosensing applications are highlighted, namely uncladded, U-shape, D-shape, tapered, end-face reflected, fiber gratings and special optical fibers, alongside practical application examples. Furthermore, EW, SPR, LSPR and biofunctionalization strategies, as well as the most recent advances and applications of immunosensors, are also covered. Finally, the main challenges and an outlook over the future direction of the field is presented.
