Femtosecond laser-excited generation of frequency-tunable microwave pulses, based on an unbalanced single-arm interferometer with frequency-to-time mapping, has been proposed and demonstrated with easy-to-obtain commercial devices. The optical wave-to-microwave frequency conversion, which involves continuous tuning in the range from 2.0 GHz to 19.7 GHz, was achieved based on simple spatial–optical group delay adjustment. Additionally, the pulse duration of the microwave waveform was measured to be 24 ns as the length of the linear dispersion optical fiber was fixed at 20 km. In addition, owing to the designs of the single-arm optical path and polarization-independent interference, the generated microwave pulse train had better stability in terms of frequency and electrical amplitude. Furthermore, a near-triangular-shaped microwave pulse at 4.5 GHz was experimentally obtained by the superposition of two generated sinusoidal signals, which verified the potential of this system to synthesize special microwave waveform pulses.

Abstract We investigate the magnetization reversal of single-domain magnetic nanoparticle driven by the circularly polarized cosine chirp microwave pulse (CCMP). The numerical findings, based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, reveal that the CCMP is by itself capable of driving fast and energy-efficient magnetization reversal. The microwave field amplitude and initial frequency required by a CCMP are much smaller than that of the linear down-chirp microwave pulse. This is achieved as the frequency change of the CCMP closely matches the frequency change of the magnetization precession which leads to an efficient stimulated microwave energy absorption (emission) by (from) the magnetic particle before (after) it crosses over the energy barrier. We further find that the enhancement of easy-plane shape anisotropy significantly reduces the required microwave amplitude and the initial frequency of CCMP. We also find that there is an optimal Gilbert damping for fast magnetization reversal. These findings may provide a pathway to realize the fast and low-cost memory device.

Microwave-assisted spark ignition (MAI) is a promising way to enhance the ignition performance of engines under lean conditions. To understand the effect of microwave-induced flow during MAI, the development and morphology of spark-ignited methane-air flame kernel under various microwave pulse parameters are experimentally studied. Experiments are conducted in a constant volume combustion chamber, and flame development is recorded through a high-speed shadowgraph method. Flame area and deformation index are adopted to evaluate the flame characteristic. Results show that increasing the microwave pulse energy from 0 to 150 mJ exhibits a threshold process for expanding the flame kernel area under 0.2 MPa ambient pressure. When the pulse energy is below the threshold of 90 mJ, the microwave enhancing efficiency is much lower than that beyond the threshold. Increasing microwave pulse repetition frequency (PRF) changes the flow on flame surface and raises the absorption efficiency for microwave energy, and thus helps to improve the MAI performance under higher pressures. Hence, 1 kHz pulses cause more obvious flame deformation than those with higher PRF pulses under 0.2 MPa, while this tendency is reversed as the ambient pressure increases to 0.6 MPa. Besides, microwave pulses of different repetition frequencies lead to different flame kernel morphology, implying the various regimes behind the interaction between a microwave and spark kernel.
