Time in quantum gravity is not a well-defined notion despite its central role in the very definition of dynamics. Using the formalism of quantum geometrodynamics, we briefly review the problem and illustrate it with two proposed solutions. Our main application is quantum cosmology—the application of quantum gravity to the Universe as a whole.

In the process of modern art design, ceramic techniques are widely used and can fully show modern ceramic art. In this paper, the application of ceramic techniques was deeply explored. Firstly, the basic characteristics of modern ceramic techniques and art were briefly described, and then the application status of modern ceramic techniques art design was analyzed. Finally, the main application measures of ceramic techniques were discussed emphatically, including plane design, indoor design, product design, decoration design, so as to show the innovative development of modern ceramic techniques and provide some reference for the relevant personnel.

AbstractIn this article we construct a new motivic measure called the Jacques Tits motivic measure. As a first main application, we prove that two Severi-Brauer varieties (or, more generally, two twisted Grassmannian varieties), associated to 2-torsion central simple algebras, have the same class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties if and only if they are isomorphic. In addition, we prove that if two Severi-Brauer varieties, associated to central simple algebras of period $$\{3, 4, 5, 6\}$$ { 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 } , have the same class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, then they are necessarily birational to each other. As a second main application, we prove that two quadric hypersurfaces (or, more generally, two involution varieties), associated to quadratic forms of dimension 6 or to quadratic forms of arbitrary dimension defined over a base field k with $$I^3(k)=0$$ I 3 ( k ) = 0 , have the same class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties if and only if they are isomorphic. In addition, we prove that the latter main application also holds for products of quadric hypersurfaces.

This article presents the results of tests on the resistance of new textile signal lines to bending and abrasion. The textile signal lines are one of the most important parts of the electronic system incorporated into modern smart garments. The main application of the lines presented in this article is the transmission of digital signals or high-frequency analogue signals. The tested lines were made of fabrics with sewn paths made of electro-conductive fabric. The construction of a measuring stand for testing the electric properties of textile transmission lines is shown. This article presents the effects of bending and abrasion on the resistance of electro-conductive strips, which are one of the elements of textile signal lines. The article also presents the effects of bending and abrasion on the characteristic impedance of constructed textile signal lines. Statistical analysis of the obtained results is also presented.

Representing an algorithmic workflow as a state machine is a frequently used technique in distributed systems. Replicating a state machine in a fault tolerant way is one of the main application areas under this context. When implementing a replicated state machine, a crucial problem is to maintain consistency among replicas that might handle various different requests arriving at each different replica. This problem requires maintaining a single consistent ordering of the distributed requests handled separately by replicas. Basic consensus protocols such as two phase commit (2PC), can be used to maintain consistency between replicas whenever a request is to be processed. In this study we modify 2PC protocol to take advantage of basic properties of a state machine and detect possible write conflicts earlier. Our experiments on distributed cloud environments show that our modified 2PC protocol increases the throughput and decrease wasted write operations by a significant amount.

Does a bank have the right to cancel the contract between it and its customer unilaterally? This was the crisp question put to the court in the recent decision in Bredenkamp v Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd (2010 4 SA 468 (SCA); 2010 4 All SA 113 (“Bredenkamp: appeal”)). Before this case reached the Supreme Court of Appeal (“SCA”), two lower courts were asked to pronounce on the same question (see Breedenkamp v Standard Bank of South Africa 2009 3 All SA 339 (GSJ); 2009 5 SA 304 (GSJ) (“Bredenkamp: interim application”)); and Breedenkamp v Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd 2009 6 SA 277 (GSJ) (“Bredenkamp: main application”). (In passing it should be mentioned that Bredenkamp’s name was spelt incorrectly in the citation of both the interim and main applications; Bredenkamp’s name was correctly spelt in the citation of the decision of the SCA). The present discussion will refer to all three these decisions.

Pleuroscopy or medical thoracoscopy is the second most common utilized procedure after bronchoscopy in the promising field of interventional pulmonology. Its main application is for the diagnosis and management of benign or malignant pleural effusions. Entry into the hemithorax is associated with pain and patient discomfort, whereas concurrently, notable pathophysiologic alterations occur. Therefore, frequently procedural sedation and analgesia is needed, not only to alleviate the patient’s emotional stress and discomfort by mitigating the anxiety and minimizing the pain but also for yielding better procedural conditions for the operator. The scope of this review is to present the physiologic derangements occurring in pleuroscopy and compare the various anesthetic techniques and sedative agents that are currently being used in this context.

Abstract We prove stability of logarithmic tangent sheaves of singular hypersurfaces $D$ of the projective space with constraints on the dimension and degree of the singularities of $D$. As the main application, we prove that determinants and symmetric determinants have simple (in characteristic zero, stable) logarithmic tangent sheaves and we describe an open dense piece of the associated moduli space.
