Abstract Recently, transition-metal-based kagome metals have aroused much research interest as a novel platform to explore exotic topological quantum phenomena. Here we report on the synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a bilayer kagome lattice compound V3Sb2. The polycrystalline V3Sb2 samples were synthesized by conventional solid-state-reaction method in a sealed quartz tube at temperatures below 850 ℃. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility and resistivity revealed consistently a density-wave-like transition at T dw ≈ 160 K with a large thermal hysteresis, even though some sample-dependent behaviors are observed presumably due to the different preparation conditions. Upon cooling through T dw, no strong anomaly in lattice parameters and no indication of symmetry lowering were detected in powder x-ray diffraction measurements. This transition can be suppressed completely by applying hydrostatic pressures of about 1.8 GPa, around which no sign of superconductivity is observed down to 1.5 K. Specific-heat measurements reveal a relatively large Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 18.5 mJ/mol-K2, confirming the metallic ground state with moderate electronic correlations. Density functional theory calculations indicate that V3Sb2 shows a non-trivial topological crystalline property. Thus, our study makes V3Sb2 a new candidate of metallic kagome compound to study the interplay between density-wave-order, nontrivial band topology, and possible superconductivity.

We report the structure and physical properties of two newly discovered compounds AV8Sb12 and AV6Sb6 (A = Cs, Rb), which have C 2 (space group: Cmmm) and C 3 (space group: R 3 ¯ m ) symmetry, respectively. The basic V-kagome unit appears in both compounds, but stacking differently. A V2Sb2 layer is sandwiched between two V3Sb5 layers in AV8Sb12, altering the V-kagome lattice and lowering the symmetry of kagome layer from hexagonal to orthorhombic. In AV6Sb6, the building block is a more complex slab made up of two half-V3Sb5 layers that are intercalated by Cs cations along the c-axis. Transport property measurements demonstrate that both compounds are nonmagnetic metals, with carrier concentrations at around 1021 cm−3. No superconductivity has been observed in CsV8Sb12 above 0.3 K under in situ pressure up to 46 GPa. Compared to CsV3Sb5, theoretical calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveal a quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure in CsV8Sb12 with C 2 symmetry and no van Hove singularities near the Fermi level. Our findings will stimulate more research into V-based kagome quantum materials.

AbstractIn two-dimensional (2D) metallic kagome lattice materials, destructive interference of electronic hopping pathways around the kagome bracket can produce nearly localized electrons, and thus electronic bands that are flat in momentum space. When ferromagnetic order breaks the degeneracy of the electronic bands and splits them into the spin-up majority and spin-down minority electronic bands, quasiparticle excitations between the spin-up and spin-down flat bands should form a narrow localized spin-excitation Stoner continuum coexisting with well-defined spin waves in the long wavelengths. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering studies of spin excitations in 2D metallic kagome lattice antiferromagnetic FeSn and paramagnetic CoSn, where angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments found spin-polarized and nonpolarized flat bands, respectively, below the Fermi level. Our measurements on FeSn and CoSn reveal well-defined spin waves extending above 140 meV and correlated paramagnetic scattering around Γ point below 90 meV, respectively. In addition, we observed non-dispersive excitations at ~170 meV and ~360 meV arising mostly from hydrocarbon scattering of the CYTOP-M used to glue the samples to aluminum holder. Therefore, our results established the evolution of spin excitations in FeSn and CoSn, and identified anomalous flat modes overlooked by the neutron scattering community for many years.

AbstractNon-coplanar spin textures with finite scalar spin chirality can be artificially induced at surfaces and interfaces through the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. However, stabilizing a proper magnetic skyrmion crystal via this route remains elusive. Here, using an epitaxial bilayer of platinum and geometrically frustrated kagome-lattice ferromagnet Fe3Sn, we show the possible formation of a two-dimensional skyrmion crystal under well-regulated Fe3Sn thickness conditions. Magnetization measurements reveal that the magnetic anisotropy is systematically varied from an inherent in-plane type to a perpendicular type with the thickness reduction. Below approximately 0.5 nm, we clearly detect a topological Hall effect that provides evidence for finite scalar spin chirality. Our topological Hall effect analysis, combined with theoretical simulations, not only establishes its interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction origin, but also indicates the emergence of a stable skyrmion crystal phase, demonstrating the potential of kagome-lattice ferromagnets in spin chirality engineering using thin-film nanostructures.
