This paper aims to present an overview and analysis of the Brazilian defense industrial base (IDB). Based on the Brazilian Industrial Defense Base Mapping and its eight segments (ABDI-IPEA, 2016), our maincontribution is to provide the first national and comparative analysis between these sectors, since there is a lack of knowledge in the literature on the Brazilian defense-related companies scenario. Focusingon the analysis of the international insertion of these companies into the global industry through international trade, we analyze defense-related companies based on (i) personnel and average salaries;(ii) innovative and investment profile; (iii) share of export; (iv) main destination countries; (v) technological intensity of exported products; (vi) main obstacles when looking for external markets; and(vii) main export support instruments. Despite the limitations in terms of data, among the main conclusions stand out that each segment has a specific profile, faces and responds differently to market barriers, and in general its innovative profile is still focused on process, what may limit the competitiveness of companies.

This chapter considers policies and strategies underpinning social work research and evidence-based or evidence-informed practice. It also looks at how social workers say they generate knowledge or evidence and disseminate it to others; the dissemination of research is principally via publications such as journals, and through conferences. Professional and occupational groups may be expected to develop their own knowledge base(s) that will often be situated within specific epistemological frameworks, though the nature of such frameworks is often contested. This chapter explores how, within social work and social care, theoretical models and methods of gathering evidence from practice are explained and used. Social work, though emphasising the social, may be expected to draw upon an eclectic range of social and clinical sciences, with issues of disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity being identified as an important aspect of how knowledge of different kinds, although contested, can be applied to social work practice and research. The chapter also provides examples of how social workers have explained what evidence looks like to them and how they have attempted to work with evidence and research in their practice.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is one of the most abundant messenger RNA modifications in eukaryotes involved in various pivotal processes of RNA metabolism. The most popular high-throughput m6A identification method depends on the anti-m6A antibody but suffers from poor reproducibility and limited resolution. Exact location information is of great value for understanding the dynamics, machinery, and functions of m6A. Here, we developed a precise and high-throughput antibody-independent m6A identification method based on the m6A-sensitive RNA endoribonuclease recognizing ACA motif (m6A-sensitive RNA-Endoribonuclease–Facilitated sequencing or m6A-REF-seq). Whole-transcriptomic, single-base m6A maps generated by m6A-REF-seq quantitatively displayed an explicit distribution pattern with enrichment near stop codons. We used independent methods to validate methylation status and abundance of individual m6A sites, confirming the high reliability and accuracy of m6A-REF-seq. We applied this method on five tissues from human, mouse, and rat, showing that m6A sites are conserved with single-nucleotide specificity and tend to cluster among species.

The PARSIFAL (Probabilistic Approach to pRovide Scenarios of earthquake Induced slope FAiLures) method was applied to the survey of post-earthquake landslides in central Italy for seismic microzonation purposes. In order to optimize time and resources, while also reducing errors, the paper-based method of survey data sheets was translated into digital formats using such instruments as Tablet PCs, GPS and open source software (QGIS). To the base mapping consisting of Technical Regional Map (Carta Tecnica Regionale—CTRs) at the scale of 1:10,000, layers were added with such sensitive information as the Inventory of Landslide Phenomena in Italy (Inventario dei Fenomeni Franosi in Italia—IFFI), for example. A database was designed and implemented in the SQLite/SpatiaLite Relational DataBase Management System (RDBMS) to store data related to such elements as landslides, rock masses, discontinuities and covers (as provided by PARSIFAL). To facilitate capture of the datum on the ground, data entry forms were created with Qt Designer. In addition to this, the employment of some QGIS plug-ins, developed for digital surveying and enabling of quick annotations on the map and the import of images from external cameras, was found to be of considerable use.
