The study of loom technology and textile design structure can reveal connections between weaving traditions similarly to how comparative linguistics reveal connections between linguistic groups, due to the inherent conservatism of weaving. This paper compares the weaving traditions of the Ende and the Palu’e, who are linked in oral traditions, primarily by comparing weaving related terminology against the dictionary, and examines if Palu’e weaving have branched away from Ende weaving. The archaic style of Palu’e weaving may have a source in older forms of Flores design structures that became surpassed by developments, such as patola designs among the Ende. But the comparison of the weaving lexicons show a lower convergence than language generally and does not support a Palu’e weaving origin from the Ende, neither do the designs and basic techniques. The links between the Ende and the Palu’e are more on the proto-level; language group, culture, weaving tools.

A time-lapse system (TLS) with a well-of-the-well (WOW) dish, which allows individual identification and the possibility of autocrine and paracrine signaling between group-cultured embryos, has been widely used in clinic. However, there is a need to re-think the inclusion principles of human embryos in WOW-based TLS, especially for grade IV (G4) embryos, which are considered to potentially have detrimental effects on surrounding embryos. Here, we carried out a single-center, large-cohort, retrospective study, comprising 303 patients undergoing IVF (148 cases) and ICSI (155 cases), with a total of 3282 embryos, to compare embryonic development until the blastocyst stage in the group culture system with or without G4 embryos. Further, LC-MS/MS was used to analyze the G1-G4 embryo secretome to understand the influence of G4 embryos on the group culture microenvironment. We proved that polypronuclear (PPN) embryos positively contribute to the development of the neighboring embryos through secretion of ILIAP, ITI-H4, and keratin. Existence of more than one G4 embryo had a negative effect on the other embryos (p < 0.05). Moreover, G4 embryos were found to secrete KLKB1 and VTDB, which might harm the neighboring embryos. Thus, our study clarified that when embryos are subjected to group culture in WOW-based TLS, the PPN-derived embryos need not be removed, and it is important to ensure that no more than one G4 embryo is present to avoid negative effects on the neighboring embryos.

We distinguish three organizational commitment (OC) processes (compliance, identification, and internalization) based on functional theory and examine whether the importance of these mechanisms varies with public servants’ OC levels. Our quantile regression results provide evidence for both the phased characteristics and common basis of OC. pay and promotion appropriateness have stronger positive associations with OC among low-committed employees, and public service motivation has a stronger positive association with OC among high-committed employees; compliance and intrinsic internalization processes are especially active at low and high commitment levels, respectively. On the other hand, group culture and transformational leadership as a common basis of OC has similar effects on the improvement of OC for all public servants, regardless of OC levels; identification and extrinsic internalization processes are important to a similar extent at all OC levels.

The X-Group (or Post-Meroitic) Period in Lower Nubia is a period of cultural continuity from the previous Meroitic Period, while also being a period of significant change and innovation. X-Group culture is characterized in the elite sphere by forms of material culture that frequently combine motifs with Egyptian, Classical, and Kushitic antecedents in inventive ways, long-distance trade relationships and monumental building projects in the mortuary domain. In both elite and non-elite circles a distinctive pottery tradition endures, and ritual practices focused at sites with long genealogies continued. The introduction of the waterwheel in Lower Nubia enabled an expansion of agricultural cropping regimes and supported settlement in the region, which was frequently based at sites that had seen Meroitic Period activity, although there is frequently a gap in the chronology rather than direct temporal continuity.

The quality of an oocyte is often represented by its morphological characteristics. Stringent selection of bovine cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs) for invitro embryo production (IVP) is regularly based on parameters such as colour and granulation of the ooplasm, density of the surrounding cumulus cells, brightness of the zona pellucida, among other less common parameters. The link between developmental competence and morphology of the COC has been demonstrated in literature in group culture system. However, this has not been yet examined in an individual invitro production system. This study investigates the ability of IVP researchers to predict whether an oocyte will develop into a blastocyst at Day 8 of invitro culture in an individual production system. A set of 29 pictures of immature bovine COCs was presented in duplicates to eight bovine IVP researchers with different institutional backgrounds. The observers were asked if they would select each oocyte for further IVP processing, assuming that only the oocytes with the highest developmental potential can proceed, and thus a stringent selection is warranted. These 29 immature oocytes were matured, fertilized, and cultured individually invitro (using conventional methods) so that their ability to develop into a blastocyst at Day 8 post-fertilization was known. The ability to reach the blastocyst stage was stated as the gold standard and compared with the answers of the observers using kappa statistics and sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) tests. Kappa (κ) for interobserver agreement was κ=0.01 (Se=50%, Sp=53%; positive predictive value=14%, negative predictive value=87%) with 50% accuracy of prediction. The intraobserver agreement was κ=0.69, with κ=1 referring to 100% agreement (Se=87%, Sp=83%), with an accuracy of 85%. The ability of trained embryologists to predict the fate of oocytes’ developmental competence was accurate for only half of the presented oocytes. Additionally, the proportion of false positive (1 − Sp) and false negative (1−Se) predictions was equally distributed. The low positive predictive value might be due to the lower development rates in individual culture systems versus group culture systems, whereas observers are mainly trained to select oocytes for group culture. This study demonstrated the subjective nature of the oocyte selection process that is based on visual examination of COC morphology because interobserver agreement was almost nonexistent. Interpretation of the morphology within an observer remains consequent, represented by the high intraobserver agreement. Consequently, there is a need to develop a new model for the objective determination of oocyte quality for individual IVP. The implementation of machine learning algorithms could objectively enhance oocyte selection and artificial reproductive technologies in extension.
