Impact Analysis of Intelligent Agents in Automatic Fault-Prone Components Prediction and Testing

Software quality is imperative for industrial strength software. This quality will be often determined by a few components present in the software which decides the entire functionality. If any of these components are not rigorously tested, the quality will be highly affected. Without knowing which of these components are really critical, it will not be possible to perform high level testing. Hence, to predict such fault-prone or critical components from the software prior to testing and prioritizing them during the testing process, an agent-based approach is proposed in this chapter. The framework developed as part of this work will certainly reduce the field failures and thus will improve the software quality. Further, this approach has also utilized important metrics to predict such components and also prioritized the components based on their critical value. Also, the work proposed in this research has also been compared with some of the existing approaches and the results reveal that, this work is a novel one and can both predict and test the components from the software.

A multiparty session typing discipline for fault-tolerant event-driven distributed programming

This paper presents a formulation of multiparty session types (MPSTs) for practical fault-tolerant distributed programming. We tackle the challenges faced by session types in the context of distributed systems involving asynchronous and concurrent partial failures – such as supporting dynamic replacement of failed parties and retrying failed protocol segments in an ongoing multiparty session – in the presence of unreliable failure detection. Key to our approach is that we develop a novel model of event-driven concurrency for multiparty sessions. Inspired by real-world practices, it enables us to unify the session-typed handling of regular I/O events with failure handling and the combination of features needed to express practical fault-tolerant protocols. Moreover, the characteristics of our model allow us to prove a global progress property for well-typed processes engaged in multiple concurrent sessions, which does not hold in traditional MPST systems. To demonstrate its practicality, we implement our framework as a toolchain and runtime for Scala, and use it to specify and implement a session-typed version of the cluster management system of the industrial-strength Apache Spark data analytics framework. Our session-typed cluster manager composes with other vanilla Spark components to give a functioning Spark runtime; e.g., it can execute existing third-party Spark applications without code modification. A performance evaluation using the TPC-H benchmark shows our prototype implementation incurs an average overhead below 10%.

The gift and the threat: an artistic exploration into the machine's threat against the flesh body

This paper acts as a support for the two projects I have submitted: Industrial Strength and The Gift The Threat. The projects and the paper examine ideas of the threat of the metallized body on the flesh body. Aesthetics and texts vitalized ideas that were explored through the videos, and the videos themselves represent an artistic discovery and a contribution to aesthetics, history and philosophy - as well as a springboard for a larger body of work. My research involved analysis of the fascists and the Futurists and their use of the machine and machine-body ideals, the cult of the engineer, rhetorical applications of the Mechtech machine as determined by Barry Brummett as well as examination into texts and imagery involving the body, dance, military aesthetics and finally, much personal discovery. The process of making the two videos revealed my own position on the topic of the body - filming my own body in relation to texts and imagery analyzed, I was forced to answer questions of how I felt about the body, technology, spirituality and art making, all within an academic and artistic context. The footage and soundtrack in both videos are original (save for one still image) and were composed using a process that I explore at length in the paper: spiritual and highly personal, the process divulges much about the artist, and likewise, I hope that the reading of the projects offers discovery for the viewer in the form of personal questions of the body and the machine. The possibility for further artistic and academic work on the ideas examined in these projects is exciting: my focus was solely on the Mechtech machine (gears and pistons, and what we would know as factory machinery), fascism and the body, but there are many ideas one could expand upon, including a study in gender and machine aesthetics; contemporary machines and the body; and the body and mechanical/flesh motion. My hope is that these projects inspire questions, ideas and further pursuits based on the topics explored within the works and paper.

A simple model to assess the long term fate of the AMOC

<p>Studies with global climate models over the past 25 years have shown a range of long-term responses of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), in response to scenarios in which greenhouse gases are increased then eventually stabilised at some value, possibly after temporarily overshooting that value. AMOC responses include stabilisation at weaker than the pre-industrial level, rapid recovery following a period of quasi-steady weak circulation, overshooting to stronger than pre-industrial strength, or tipping to a quasi-permanent weak state. While many of these studies have gained insight into the mechanisms behind their individual model behaviour, no overarching understanding exists of what determines how a particular model will respond.   </p><p>We present a simple AMOC model suitable to characterise the different possible long-term responses, and use it as a (partially) unifying framework to show how the different behaviours can arise from a competition between thermal and haline feedbacks. The results are relevant to defining ‘safe mitigation pathways’ that avoid or reduce the risk of AMOC tipping or potentially dangerous overshoots.</p>

Rainer Maria Rilke

One doesn’t think of Rainer Maria Rilke as writing poems on sociological or documentary themes, on subjects that might otherwise reside in newspapers and books of social history, anything like emigration or poverty or unemployment. To some extent, one would be wrong. From the vantage point of a Swiss-managed Neapolitan luxury hotel, the poet describes the phenomenon of industrial-strength emigration from Southern Italy at the opening of the twentieth century. Is this an exercise in the macabre, the heartless, or something somehow strangely prophetic of Rilke’s own future career?

Industrial Strength Bluegrass

In the twentieth century, hundreds of thousands of migrants seeking economic opportunities relocated from the Appalachian region to southwestern Ohio. They brought mountain and gospel music with them, as well as an openness to new sounds that were emerging in mid-century. Without access to capital, formal instruction, or mainstream media attention, a core of devoted musicians and entrepreneurs built an unrivaled radio, recording, and performance infrastructure for bluegrass music. Between 1947 and 1989, important careers were launched and the distinct artistry of bluegrass made during those years in Cincinnati, Dayton, Middletown, Hamilton, Springfield and environs—an area of approximately 250 square miles—had a permanent influence on American roots music. This work explores the history of southwestern Ohio’s Appalachian migration and the subsequent proliferation of bluegrass musicians, radio broadcasters, recording studios, record labels, bars, festivals, and sacred music. It also explores how following generations built upon that base, how bluegrass reached non-Appalachian participants, how bluegrass was used in public education and community development, and how distinctive musical qualities of bluegrass that flourished in the southwestern Ohio region influenced the worldwide development of the genre. First-person narratives of key figures are included as well as analytical essays by academic and independent scholars, along with suggestions for further reading and listening.
