The study explored the merit of chemically enhanced biodegradation of high organic matter as a sustainable treatment scheme for industrial wastewaters. For this purpose, an integrated, chemically enhanced activated sludge configuration was tested for confectionary effluents with a COD level of around 10.000 mg L-1. In this configuration, chemical settling acted as a polishing step, which removed 50% of the total COD load, including 10% of colloidal COD in the soluble COD range. The sequential batch reactor, selected as the final biological treatment step, was able to remove the remaining biodegradable COD completely. The study primarily demonstrated the merit of in-plant pollution footprint assessment and wastewater characterization with significant COD fractions as necessary prerequisites for the management and final biodegradation of industrial wastewaters with high organic matter content.

Limbah cair industri tahu mengandung zat organik yang tinggi seperti BOD5 dan COD sehingga perlu adanya pengolahan sebelum dibuang ke lingkungan. Salah satu alternatif pengolahan yaitu menggunakan sistem biofilter anaerob. Penelitian ini bersifat eksperimental yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui penurunan kadar BOD5 dan COD pada limbah cair industri tahu menggunakan sistem biofilter anaerob. Reaktor yang digunakan terdiri dari 2 buah reaktor dan terbuat dari kaca dengan ketebalan 10 mm. Reaktor pertama bervolume 0,081 m3 yang diisi dengan media batu kerikil setinggi 70 cm dan reaktor kedua bervolume 0,059 m3 diisi dengan media bioball rambutan setinggi 45 cm. Limbah cair industri tahu dialirkan ke dalam reaktor biofilter anaerob secara kontinyu dengan arah aliran down flow. Parameter yang diukur yaitu kadar BOD5 dan COD pada inlet maupun outlet reaktor biofilter anaerob. Reaktor 1 bermedia batu kerikil mampu menyisihkan kadar BOD5 dengan penyisihan tertinggi terjadi pada waktu operasi hari ke-4 yaitu sebesar 943,8 mg/L dan penyisihan kadar COD tertinggi pada waktu operasi hari ke-4 yaitu sebesar 1931,2 mg/L. Sedangkan pada reaktor 2 bermedia bioball rambutan mampu menyisihkan kadar BOD5 dengan penyisihan tertinggi terjadi pada waktu operasi hari ke-4 yaitu sebesar 936,7 mg/L dan penyisihan kadar COD tertinggi pada waktu operasi hari ke-4 yaitu sebesar 1856,6 mg/L.  Kata Kunci : batu kerikil, bioball rambutan, biofilter anaerob, limbah tahu.  Tofu industrial liquid waste contains high organic matter such as BOD5 and COD so it needs processing before being discharged into the environment. One of alternative processing is using an anaerobic biofilter system. This study is experimental which aims to determine the decrease of BOD5 and COD levels in tofu wastewater using anaerobic biofilter system. The reactor consist is 2 reactors and is made of glass with a thickness of 10 mm. The first reactor with a volume of 0.081 m3 was filled with 70 cm of gravel media and a second reactor with a volume of 0.059 m3 filled with 45 cm of rambutan bioball media. Tofu industrial liquid waste is flowed into the anaerobic biofilter reactor continuously with down flow direction. Parameters measured were BOD5 and COD levels at the anaerobic biofilter reactor inlet and outlet. The highest removal of BOD5 levels in reactor 1 with gravel media occurred on the 4th day of operation with a allowance of 943.8 mg/L and the highest removal of COD levels at the 4th day of operation was 1931.2 mg/L. Whereas the highest removal of BOD5 levels in reactor 2 with rambutan bioball media occurred on the 4th day of operation with a allowance of 936.7 mg/L and the highest removal of COD levels at the 4th day of operation with a allowance of 1856.6 mg/L. Keywords: anaerobic biofilter, gravel stone, rambutan bioball, tofu waste.

AbstractNitrous acid (HONO) photolysis produces hydroxyl radicals—a key atmospheric oxidant. Soils are strong HONO emitters, yet HONO production pathways in soils and their relative contributions are poorly constrained. Here, we conduct 15N tracer experiments and isotope pool dilution assays on two types of agricultural soils in Finland to determine HONO emission fluxes and pathways. We show that microbial processes are more important than abiotic processes for HONO emissions. Microbial nitrate reduction (denitrification) considerably exceeded ammonium oxidation as a source of nitrite—a central nitrogen pool connected with HONO emissions. Denitrification contributed 97% and 62% of total HONO fluxes in low and high organic matter soil, respectively. Microbial ammonium oxidation only produced HONO in high organic matter soil (10%). Our findings indicate that microbial nitrate reduction is an important HONO production pathway in aerobic soils, suggesting that terrestrial ecosystems favouring it could be HONO emission hotspots, thereby influencing atmospheric chemistry.

Under high organic matter content, even under low extractable soil P concentrations, sufficient or over-sufficient foliar P levels may be found. This multi-year study aimed at examining the effects of organic matter content and irrigation management on (a) soil fertility, (b) P-cycle related soil enzymes (acid and alkaline phosphatase, pyrophosphatase) and (c) foliar nutrient concentrations. Irrigated and non-irrigated groves of fully productive trees of the cultivar “Chondrolia Chalkidikis” with low organic matter (LOM < 1.5%), medium organic matter (1.5% < MOM < 2.5%) and high organic matter (HOM > 2.5%) were selected for the experimentation. It was hypothesized that olive groves receiving high inorganic fertilization and irrigation inputs (usually with medium to relatively low organic matter content) would show higher soil and foliar P concentrations compared to the non-irrigated groves with higher organic matter content receiving manure applications. Most of the soil variables (including the three enzymes’ activities) were affected by differences in organic matter content. However, organic matter content did not show a significant influence on foliar nutrient concentrations. Olive trees, especially those cultivated in soils with high organic matter content (receiving organic fertilization), can over-satisfy their P nutritional needs, even though soil analyses show low soil extractable P concentrations, probably due to the high enzymatic activity of acid and alkaline phosphatases. The practical conclusion of this study is that P fertilizer recommendations should be primarily based on foliar P rather than on extractable soil P.

Introducing Biofilter as a Technique for Solving a Problem of Organic Pollutan at Brachiswater Pond at Lakkang Village, MakassarAbstract: Fish/shrimp culture at pond is one of income source for coastal community. Water sources for brackhiswater pond come from river and estuary.  The quality of water source for this pond depend on the quality of river and estuary.  On the other side, people use river to through it their waste not only domestic waste but also industrial waste along the river, consequently the pollutant in the river is high. Brackishwater pond along Tallo river has a source of water from River and Tallo Estuary.  A high organic concentration in the Tallo River has a significantly effect to the production of shrimp/fish pond.  A low water quality due to high organic matter could decrease the production of pond and farmers could not be able to grow out fish/shrimp for all year due to in particular month was occurred an increasing significantly of organic pollutant in the river. Introducing biofilter method to farmers for increasing  pond water quality and reducing organic waste in the pond is very important, so farmer could apply this simple biofilter technique for solving a problem of a high organic matter in their pond.  Applying biofilter techinique could be expected increasing water quality in the pond, consequently it could increase shrimp/pond production of farmers.Keywords: Biofilter, organic pollutant, Shrimp/fish pond, Tallo River and Lakkang Village.Abstrak: Budidaya ikan/udang di tambak merupakan salah satu sumber pendapatan masyarakat pesisir.  Sumber air di tambak biasanya berasal dari sungai dan muara sungai.  Kualitas sumber air di tambak sangat tergantung kepada kualitas air sungai dan muara.  Di sisi lain, sungai merupakan tempat pembuangan limbah baik limbah domestic maupun limbah industry yang ada di sepanjang sungai sehingga kandungan limbah baik limbah organic maupun non organic cenderung sangat tinggi di perairan sungai. Pertambakan di sepanjang muara sungai Tallo, Kelurahan Lakkang sumber airnya berasal dari Sungai dan Muara Sungai Tallo.  Tingginya kandungan bahan organic di perairan Sungai Tallo sangat mempengaruhi produksi tambak masyarakat. Kondisi kualitas perairan yang rendah karena tingginya kandungan bahan organic menyebabkan semakin turunnya produksi tambak dan masyarakat tidak dapat membudidayakan ikan dan udangnya sepanjang tahun karena pada waktu-waktu tertentu terjadi peningkatan limbah bahan organic yang signifikan. Pengenalan metode biofilter untuk meningkatkan kualitas perairan tambak dan mengurangi limbah organic di tambak sangat penting untuk dilakukan sehingga masyarakat dapat memanfaatkan teknologi sederhana biofilter untuk mengatasi masalah tingginya konsentrasi bahan organik di tambak.  Dengan penerapan teknologi biofilter ini diharapkan terjadi peningkatan kualitas air tambak yang akan meningkatkan produksi budidaya udang/ikan.Kata kunci: Biofilter, pencemaran, bahan organic dan Kelurahan Lakkang.
