Background: The shape of the nose is a signature indicating the ethnicity ,race, age, and sex. Anthropometric parameters vary with age, sex, and ethnic background, and several authors have attempted to document normative values which may serve as references. Materials and Methods: This study includes measurement of different parameters of nose among 14 North Indian(9 males;5 females) and 61 South Indian medical students (27 males;34 females) using vernier calliper and was statistically analysed. Results: The means of various parameters were- 1)Nasal Breadth -2.8cm (North Indians) and 2.7 cm(South Indians).2)Nasal height5.2cm(North Indians) and 4.9cm(South Indians).3)The nasofacial angle-39.4 degree(North Indians) and 37.2 degree(South Indians).4)The nasolabial angle is 118.2 degree(North Indians) and 115.9 degree(South Indians).5)The nasofrontal angle 129.3 degree(North Indians) and 131.3degree(South Indians).6).The most common type of nose is leptorrhine in both North and South Indians. Conclusion: All the measurements can be used for evaluation of nasal deformity, treatment planning and post surgical evaluation of the correction achieved during rhinoplasty.

The study was to compare the red blood cell osmotic fragility between South Indian and African ethnicities. A cross sectional study was performed in the Department of Physiology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. The study involved apparently healthy young adults between 18 to 40 years old. The whole study's total sample size was 50 healthy individuals, 25 South Indians (13 female and 12 male) and 25 Africans (13 female and 12 male).  The results showed an increase in the percentage haemolysis that was statistically significant (p=0.0001) in South Indians (32.16 ±5.048%) compared to Africans (20.01 ± 3.151%), respectively. The present study has identified and quantified race's impact as one of the determinant factors of red blood cell osmotic stress haemolysis. Therefore, we conclude that the percentage of haemolysis is higher for the South Indian population than the African population.

AbstractIn lip reconstructive surgery, knowledge of orolabial dimensions and position according to ethnicity, age, and gender are important to obtain satisfactory results. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of information related to these values in South Indians. The objective of the present study was to quantify the orolabial dimensions and position in South Indians. Evaluation of orolabial features was performed on standardized frontal and lateral of 400 South Indian subjects (200 males and 200 females), aged 18 to 30 years. The measured parameters were evaluated by an independent t-test. Significant sexual dimorphism was found in 12 of 13 measurements. Except upper lip reference to E plane, all other linear measurements such as mouth width, philtrum width, lower lip reference to E plane, upper lip height, cutaneous upper lip, upper and lower vermilion height, cutaneous lower lip height, lower lip height, and labiotragial distance were significantly greater in males than females. Angular measurements, interlabial angle, and labiomental angle were significantly greater in females. Clinically significant sexual dimorphism existed for mouth width, labiotragial distance, interlabial angle, and labiomental angle (mean difference > 3 mm). Out of the four orolabial indices, only intercanthal/mouth width indices showed a significant sexual difference. In both sexes, the triangular shape of philtral column was most common. Comparative analysis between South Indians and North American whites revealed significant differences in all measurements and some resemblance to the Han Chinese. The knowledge of the obtained mean values might be useful in the maintenance of the functional and aesthetic quality of this region during surgical planning.
