Anillos de crecimiento de Pinus hartwegii como indicadores de fluctuaciones climáticas y de la influencia de fenómenos océano-atmósfera en la Faja Volcánica Transmexicana

El presente estudio evalúa la respuesta climática y la influencia de fenómenos océano-atmósfera sobre el crecimiento radial de Pinus hartwegii Lindl en el Nevado de Colima (NEC), Nevado de Toluca (NET) y Pico de Orizaba (POR). Se fecharon 78 núcleos de crecimiento, a los cuales se les midió el ancho de anillo total. La calidad del fechado y generación de cronologías se realizaron en los programas dendrocronológicos. Los análisis de respuesta entre series dendrocronológicas y variables climáticas e índices del Niño Oscilación del Sur (ENOS), Oscilación Decadal del Pacífico (ODP) y Oscilación Multidecadal del Atlántico (OMA) se realizaron a través de correlaciones Bootstrap. Mediante análisis de regresión se generaron, calibraron y verificaron modelos lineales, con los cuales se logró reconstruir 57% y 53% de la variabilidad instrumental de la precipitación de noviembre-mayo para NEC (1940-2016) y diciembre-mayo para NET (1928-2016). Los años de sequías intensas de 1930, 1949, 1955, 1959, 1960, 1991, 1998 y 1999 y de humedad extrema de 1992, coinciden con las reconstrucciones de precipitación para NEC y NET. La temperatura máxima tuvo un efecto negativo significativo en el crecimiento radial de P. hartwegii de los tres sitios. La influencia de ENOS sobre el crecimiento arbóreo fue significativo (p < 0.05) solamente en NEC. La influencia de ODP y OMA fue significativo en los tres sitios (p < 0.05). Las condiciones microambientales locales donde se desarrolla P. hartwegii en los tres sitios de estudio modifican la respuesta fisiológica al clima y modulan el efecto de los fenómenos océano-atmosféricos.

Stoichiometry of needle litterfall of Pinus hartwegii Lindl. in two alpine forests of central Mexico

Introduction: It is essential to have baselines on nutrient dynamics in forests, due to disturbances that climate change may cause.Objective: To quantify the annual production of needles of Pinus hartwegii Lindl. and the proportion of nutrients in the alpine forests of Jocotitlán (JO) and Tláloc (TL) mountains, Estado de México.Materials and methods: A total of 12 circular needle litter traps (30 cm diameter) were placed at ground level, in each forest, distributed in four topographically contrasting sites. For one year, 228 leaf mass measurements and 1 140 chemical determinations were made to determine needle stoichiometry. Measurements were subjected to a longitudinal analysis of variance, by testing trends over time (P < 0.05).Results and discussion: Needle production in JO were 67 % higher (11.2 Mg∙ha-1∙year-1) than in TL (6.7 Mg∙ha-1∙year-1); needle litterfall was higher during summer (June and July, months with higher precipitation). For JO, nutrient flux was 98.0, 5.2, 8.7, 24.6, and 5.6 kg∙ha-1∙year-1 for N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively; for TL it was 55.3, 3.4, 7.8, 14.4, and 4.7 kg∙ha-1∙year-1 in the same order of nutrients. Nutrient concentrations were lower from March to May. Except for K, nutrient concentrations and needle production showed quadratic and cubic seasonal trends. Mg dynamics and N:Mg and N:K ratios in TL were more positive for tree growth.Conclusions: Jocotitlán and Tláloc forests produce significant needle mass (compared to other ecosystems) with high dynamic in nutrient transfers.

Combining Remote Sensing and Species Distribution Modelling to Assess Pinus hartwegii Response to Climate Change and Land Use from Izta-Popo National Park, Mexico

A detailed analysis of distribution shifts in Pinus hartwegii Lindl. is provided across time for Izta-Popo National Park (México). Combining satellite images, species distribution models, and connectivity analysis we disentangled the effect of climate change and anthropogenic land use on the habitat availability. Twenty-four Maxent habitat suitability models with varying complexity were combined with insights on vegetation and land cover change derived from two Landsat satellite images at 30-m resolution from 1993 and 2013. To evaluate effects of climate change on Izta-Popo’s P. hartwegii forest, projections for future climatic conditions (averaged for 2050 and 2070) were derived using two General Circulation Models under three Representative CO2 concentration pathways (RCPs). Calculated fragmentation and connectivity indexes (Equivalent Connected Area and Probability of Connectivity metrics) showed significant habitat loss and habitat fragmentation that weakens P. hartwegii dispersion flux and the strength of connections. Projections of future climate conditions showed a reduction of P. hartwegii habitat suitability as populations would have to migrate to higher altitudes. However, the impact of anthropogenic land use change documented over the 20 years masks the predicted impact of climate change in Izta-Popo National Park.

Estimating Rainfall Interception of Pinus hartwegii and Abies religiosa Using Analytical Models and Point Cloud

Rainfall interception plays a role in the hydrological cycle and is a critical component of water balances at the basin level, which is why understanding it is very important; as a result, in recent years, various authors have proposed different models to explain this process and identify which of them adapts better to each forest species. In this context, the aim of this research was to evaluate the Gash model and the sparse Gash analytical model in Pinus hartwegii Lindl. and Abies religiosa (Kunth) Schltdl. et. Cham., using measurements from 20 precipitation events recorded in May and June 2018 at the Zoquiapan Experimental Forest Station, Mexico. The evaporation rate was calculated using the Penman–Monteith method (PM) and Gash’s calculation procedure. The canopy parameters were also calculated with two methods, a graphical one (A) and a method proposed in this research (B), which is based on point cloud generated with drone photogrammetry. For P. hartwegii, the most accurate model to estimate interception per rainfall event was the Gash model with the A and Gash methods, which were used to calculate the canopy parameters and evaporation rates, respectively; for accumulated interception, the sparse Gash analytical model with the B and PM methods was used. For A. religiosa, the best fit for individual events was presented by the sparse Gash analytical model with the B and PM methods, and for accumulated interception, it was the Gash model with the B and Gash methods. The results allow concluding that the B method proposed in this research is a good alternative for the calculation of rainfall interception, since it tends to improve its estimation, shortening the time for acquiring information about the parameters of the canopy structure and thus minimizing the costs involved.

INDICADORES REPRODUCTIVOS EN DOS POBLACIONES NATURALES DE Pinus hartwegii LINDL

Pinus hartwegii Lindl. crece entre 2500 y 4300 msnm en las montañas de México y América Central. Información sobre indicadores reproductivos en una población es útil para describir el estado reproductivo de una especie y éstos pueden estar influenciados por variables ambientales. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la variación de indicadores reproductivos entre altitudes en poblaciones de Pinus hartwegii. Los conos se recolectaron entre 3600 y 4100 msnm en el Monte Tláloc (MT) y el Nevado de Toluca (NT) en México. En cada cono se determinó el número de semillas potenciales (NSP), óvulos abortados en el año 1 (NOAA1), óvulos abortados en el año 2 (NOAA2), semillas vanas (NSV), semillas llenas (NSLL), peso promedio de una semilla (PPS), eficiencia reproductiva (ER), eficiencia en la producción de semillas (EPS) e índice de depresión endogámica (IDE). Las variables ambientales se obtuvieron con el programa Spline. Los coeficientes de correlación (r) se calcularon entre indicadores reproductivos y variables ambientales. Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre poblaciones y entre altitudes en NSP, NOAA2, NSV, NSLL, PPS y ER, mientras que no hubo diferencias significativas entre poblaciones para EPS e IDE, aunque sí entre altitudes; tampoco se encontraron diferencias significativas entre poblaciones ni entre altitudes para NOAA1. El coeficiente de correlación fue alto (r = 0.929) entre NOAA2 y precipitación en septiembre y octubre; también éste fue alto (r = -0.829) entre ER y heladas tardías en primavera. Algunos valores de r fueron moderados entre indicadores reproductivos y variables ambientales; por ejemplo, el coeficiente de correlación fue 0.786 entre NSV y temperatura media anual, de 0.714 entre el NSLL y temperatura máxima media del mes más caliente y r = -0.642 entre NSP y temperatura media mínima del mes más frio. Los valores de los indicadores reproductivos mostraron variación entre las poblaciones y entre altitudes dentro de poblaciones de Pinus hartwegii.

Analysis of basal area increment of Pinus hartwegii Lindl. at different altitudes and aspects on Jocotitlán Mountain, State of Mexico

Introduction: Basal area increment (BAI) is an indicator of forest productivity that varies with tree age and site factors such as soil and climate. Objective: To generate tree-ring width index (RWI) and BAI chronologies of Pinus hartwegii Lindl., relate them to climatic variables, and study the variation in BAI at different altitudes and aspects. Materials and methods: Four observation sites were identified, combining northwest (NW) and southwest (SW) aspects, as well as altitudes of 3 800 and 3 700 m. At each site, the temperature was recorded every four hours for 435 days and 32 growth ring segments were collected using a Pressler´s increment borer. Tree-ring width was measured and BAI was calculated; the correlation index between these indicators and the climatic variables was Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results and discussion: The RWI series from the four observation sites had an intercorrelation of 0.33 (P < 0.01). Two low-growth periods were detected, one between 1950 and 1960 and the other between 1990 and 2005. Site SO-3700 had a different growth pattern, due to a second growth phase beginning in 1978, possibly a benefit resulting from increased temperature. The previous autumn temperature, spring temperature and April-September precipitation of the current year explained the variation in BAI (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The BAI of P. hartwegii could respond favorably to the predicted increases in temperature at an altitude of 3 700 m with southwest aspect.

Ecuaciones alométricas para estimar carbono en brinzales de Pinus hartwegii Lindl.

Los bosques de alta montaña ofrecen importantes servicios ecosistémicos de los cuales destaca el almacenamiento de bióxido de carbono (CO2), uno de los principales gases de efecto invernadero causantes del calentamiento global. Cuantificar el CO2 en este tipo de ecosistemas ayudaría a entender cómo funcionan y cómo contribuyen a la mitigación del cambio climático. El objetivo de este trabajo fue ajustar las ecuaciones alométricas para Pinus hartwegii en plantaciones de reforestación en el Parque Nacional Izta-Popo Zoquiapan. Las variables utilizadas fueron diámetro de la base, altura total y altura a la primera rama viva para relacionarlas con la biomasa. Se seleccionaron 90 brinzales y se calculó la biomasa de cada uno, así como la biomasa por componente: follaje, ramas, tallo y raíz. Se estimó el contenido de carbono para determinar la cantidad de este elemento capturado en los propios brinzales. Las ecuaciones resultantes para el diámetro a la base fue B=0.0092*DB2.7226, con un coeficiente de determinación de R2= 0.9521; y para la altura total fue de B=0.7546*hT2.5819, con un coeficiente de determinación de R2= 0.8644. La variable de altura a la primera rama viva obtuvo un coeficiente de determinación bajo, R2= 0.3203. El contenido de carbono promedio para los brinzales fue de 50.81 %.
