One critical dimension of self-control is attention control, the ability to willfully determine the content of conscious thought. It is argued here that the amount of effort required to exercise attention control while critically engaging in different media, specifically text and television, is significantly different. It is hypothesized that the amount of self-control exerted while reading will be significantly greater than while watching television. An experiment comparing a film clip with its screen play demonstrates that participants' self-control is more depleted after 30 minutes of reading than 30 minutes of viewing. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that differential habitual exposure to media will predict trait levels of self-control, respectively. An internet survey testing these relationships is reported in which a small but significant negative relationship between TV exposure and trait self-control is found.

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify how Brazilian families with children aged under 13 years face the period of social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, especially regarding the time spent on physical activity (PA), intellectual activity, games, outdoor activities and screen. Methods: An anonymous online survey was launched on March 24, 2020 in Brazil to assess how families with children aged up to 12 years are adjusting their daily routines to this situation. In the survey, each family reported the daily time each child spent in sedentary activity (sum of intellectual activities, play time on screen, playing without PA) and PA (sum of playing with PA and PA). Results: The main findings based on data from 816 children indicate that most parents consider there was a reduction in the time that children spend practicing PA; increase in screen play time and family activities, differences between sex were found regarding screen play time (boys>girls) and in playing without PA (girls>boys), and there was an age effect for all categories analyzed, with a tendency to increase the total time of sedentary lifestyle and complementary reducing the time of PA over age. Conclusions: The household routines of families during the period of social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic confirm the general reduction tendency in PA time during childhood.

Madam Fuli(1999) is an award winning creation of Shahidul Islam, the director of the film. It is one of the most remarkable films in Dhallywood, the Film Industry of Bangladesh, which won the National Film Award afterwards for its storyline and stunning acting by the protagonist’s (Fuli) cast Shimla. This film gave a jolt to the contemporary social systems of Bangladesh regarding our attitude towards the skin color of women and also towards our concept of beauty. Through the portrayal of various stage of Fuli’s life, the director, Shahidul Islam Khokon, who is the producer and the screen-play writer of this film, takes attempts to show what are the things and incidents a girl or a woman go through in the society in Bangladesh. By putting a tagline as ‘Fight for Right’ the director wants to visualize the struggle of a woman in the society of Bangladesh. But somehow, this film actually encourages the same follies and vices of the social practices that it intends to resist. This article shows how Madam Fuli actually waters into the roots of the same old racist concept of beauty.
