Abstract The simulation of long, nonlinear dispersive waves in bounded domains usually requires the use of slip-wall boundary conditions. Boussinesq systems appearing in the literature are generally not well-posed when such boundary conditions are imposed, or if they are well-posed it is very cumbersome to implement the boundary conditions in numerical approximations. In the present paper a new Boussinesq system is proposed for the study of long waves of small amplitude in a basin when slip-wall boundary conditions are required. The new system is derived using asymptotic techniques under the assumption of small bathymetric variations, and a mathematical proof of well-posedness for the new system is developed. The new system is also solved numerically using a Galerkin finite-element method, where the boundary conditions are imposed with the help of Nitsche’s method. Convergence of the numerical method is analysed, and precise error estimates are provided. The method is then implemented, and the convergence is verified using numerical experiments. Numerical simulations for solitary waves shoaling on a plane slope are also presented. The results are compared to experimental data, and excellent agreement is found.

AbstractIn many physical systems such as ocean waves, nonlinear optics, plasma physics etc., extreme events and rare fluctuations of a wave field have been widely observed and discussed. In the field of oceanography and naval architecture, their understanding is fundamental for a correct design of platforms and ships, and for performing safe operations at sea. Here, we report a measurement of an impressive and unique wave packet recorded in the Bay of Biscay in the North-East of the Atlantic Ocean. An analysis of the spatial extension of the packet that includes three large waves reveals that it extents for more than 1 km, with individual crests moving faster than 100 km/h. The central and largest wave in the packet was 27.8 m high in a sea with significant wave height of 11 m. A detailed analysis of the data using the nonlinear Fourier analysis reveals that the wave packet is characterized by a non trivial nonlinear content. This observation opens a new paradigm which requires new understanding of the dynamics of ocean waves and, more in general, of nonlinear and dispersive waves.

Burgers-type equations are considered as the models of certain phenomena in plasma astrophysics, ocean dynamics, atmospheric science and so on. In this paper, a Sharma-Tasso-Olver-Burgers equation for the nonlinear dispersive waves is studied. Based on the Painlevé-Bäcklund equations, one auto-Bäcklund transformation and two hetero-Bäcklund transformations are derived. Motivated by the Burgers hierarchy, a Lax pair is given. Via two hetero-Bäcklund transformations with different constant seed solutions, we find some multiple-kink solutions, complex periodic solutions, hybrid solutions composed of the lump, periodic and multiple kink waves. Then we discuss the influence of the coefficients of the above equation on such solutions. Via the auto-Bäcklund transformation with the nontrivial seed solutions, we obtain certain lump-type solutions, kink-type solutions and recurrence relation of the above equation.

AbstractFrequency microcombs, alternative to mode-locked laser and fiber combs, enable miniature rulers of light for applications including precision metrology, molecular fingerprinting and exoplanet discoveries. To enable frequency ruling functions, microcombs must be stabilized by locking their carrier-envelope offset frequency. So far, the microcomb stabilization remains compounded by the elaborate optics external to the chip, thus evading its scaling benefit. To address this challenge, here we demonstrate a nanophotonic chip solution based on aluminum nitride thin films, which simultaneously offer optical Kerr nonlinearity for generating octave soliton combs and quadratic nonlinearity for enabling heterodyne detection of the offset frequency. The agile dispersion control of crystalline aluminum nitride photonics permits high-fidelity generation of solitons with features including 1.5-octave spectral span, dual dispersive waves, and sub-terahertz repetition rates down to 220 gigahertz. These attractive characteristics, aided by on-chip phase-matched aluminum nitride waveguides, allow the full determination of the offset frequency. Our proof-of-principle demonstration represents an important milestone towards fully integrated self-locked microcombs for portable optical atomic clocks and frequency synthesizers.

The ([Formula: see text])-dimensional B-type Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (BKP) equation is utilized to depict weakly dispersive waves propagating in the fluid mechanics. According to [Formula: see text]-soliton solutions, resonance Y-shaped soliton and its interaction with other local wave solutions of the ([Formula: see text])-dimensional BKP equation are derived by introducing the constraint conditions. These types of hybrid soliton solutions exhibit the complex interaction phenomenon among resonance Y-shaped solitons, breather waves, line solitary waves and high-order lump waves. The dynamic behaviors of such interaction solutions are analyzed and illustrated.
