The accurate detection and alleviation of driving fatigue are of great significance to traffic safety. In this study, we tried to apply the modified multi-scale entropy (MMSE) approach, based on variational mode decomposition (VMD), to driving fatigue detection. Firstly, the VMD was used to decompose EEG into multiple intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), then the best IMFs and scale factors were selected using the least square method (LSM). Finally, the MMSE features were extracted. Compared with the traditional sample entropy (SampEn), the VMD-MMSE method can identify the characteristics of driving fatigue more effectively. The VMD-MMSE characteristics combined with a subjective questionnaire (SQ) were used to analyze the change trends of driving fatigue under two driving modes: normal driving mode and interesting auditory stimulation mode. The results show that the interesting auditory stimulation method adopted in this paper can effectively relieve driving fatigue. In addition, the interesting auditory stimulation method, which simply involves playing interesting auditory information on the vehicle-mounted player, can effectively relieve driving fatigue. Compared with traditional driving fatigue-relieving methods, such as sleeping and drinking coffee, this interesting auditory stimulation method can relieve fatigue in real-time when the driver is driving normally.

Optogenetics approach is used widely in neurobiology as it allows control of cellular activity with high spatial and temporal resolution. In most studies, optogenetics is used to control neuronal activity. In the present study optogenetics was used to stimulate astrocytes with the aim to modulate neuronal activity. To achieve this goal, light stimulation was applied to astrocytes expressing a version of ChR2 (ionotropic opsin) or Opto-α1AR (metabotropic opsin). Optimal optogenetic stimulation parameters were determined using patch-clamp recordings of hippocampal pyramidal neurons’ spontaneous activity in brain slices as a readout. It was determined that the greatest increase in the number of spontaneous synaptic currents was observed when astrocytes expressing ChR2(H134R) were activated by 5 s of continuous light. For the astrocytes expressing Opto-α1AR, the greatest response was observed in the pulse stimulation mode (T = 1 s, t = 100 ms). It was also observed that activation of the astrocytic Opto-a1AR but not ChR2 results in an increase of the fEPSP slope in hippocampal neurons. Based on these results, we concluded that Opto-a1AR expressed in hippocampal astrocytes provides an opportunity to modulate the long-term synaptic plasticity optogenetically, and may potentially be used to normalize the synaptic transmission and plasticity defects in a variety of neuropathological conditions, including models of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

The vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) Therapy® System is the first FDA-approved medical device therapy for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. Over the past two decades, the technology has evolved through multiple iterations resulting in software-related updates and implantable lead and generator hardware improvements. Healthcare providers today commonly encounter a range of single- and dual-pin generators (models 100, 101, 102, 102R, 103, 104, 105, 106, 1000) and related programming systems (models 250, 3000), all of which have their own subtle, but practical differences. It can therefore be a daunting task to go through the manuals of these implant models for comparison, some of which are not readily available. In this review, we highlight the technological evolution of the VNS Therapy System with respect to device approval milestones and provide a comparison of conventional open-loop vs. the latest closed-loop generator models. Battery longevity projections and an in-depth examination of stimulation mode interactions are also presented to further differentiate amongst generator models.

With the gradual declining of oil increment performance of CO2 huff-and-puff wells, the overall oil exchange rate shows a downward tendency. In this regard, CO2 synergistic huff-and-puff technologies have been proposed to maintain the excellent effect and extend the technical life of such wells. However, there is no specific research on the mechanism and synergistic mode of CO2 huff and puff in horizontal wells. This study aims to establish the synergistic mode and determine the adaptability and acting mechanism of CO2 synergistic huff and puff. Three synergistic huff-and-puff modes are proposed based on the peculiarity of the fault-block reservoir’s small oil-bearing area and broken geological structure. We establish three typical CO2 synergistic huff-and-puff models and analyze the influence of different geological and development factors on the huff-and-puff performance with numerical simulation. Each factor’s sensitivity is clarified, and the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) mechanism of CO2 synergistic huff and puff is proposed. The sensitivity evaluation results show that the reservoir rhythm, inter-well passage, well spacing, high-position well liquid production rate, and middle-well liquid production rate are extremely sensitive factors; the stratum dip and injection volume allocation scheme are sensitive factors; and the relationship with structural isobaths is insensitive. The EOR mechanism of synergistic huff and puff includes gravity differentiation, supplementary formation energy, CO2 forming foam flooding, and coupling effect of production rate and oil reservoirs. The implementation conditions of the two-well cooperative stimulation mode are the simplest. The two-well model is suitable for thick oil layers with a positive rhythm and large formation dip. The single-well mode requires no channeling between the wells, and the multi-well mode requires multi-well rows and can control the intermediate well’s fluid production rate. Field application at C2X1 block shows a good performance with a total oil increment of 1280 t and an average water-cut reduction of 57.7%.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> When mapping cochlear implant (CI) patients with limited reporting abilities, the lowest electrical stimulus level that produces a stapedial reflex (i.e., the electrical stapedius reflex threshold [eSRT]) can be measured to estimate the upper bound of stimulation on individual or a subset of CI electrodes. However, eSRTs measured for individual electrodes or a subset of electrodes cannot be used to predict the global adjustment of electrical stimulation levels needed to achieve comfortable loudness sensations that can be readily used in a speech coding strategy. In the present study, eSRTs were measured for 1-, 4-, and 15-electrode stimulation to (1) determine changes in eSRT levels as a function of the electrode stimulation mode and (2) determine which stimulation mode eSRT levels best approximate comfortable loudness levels from patients’ clinical maps. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> eSRTs were measured with the 3 different electrical stimulation configurations in 9 CI patients and compared with behaviorally measured, comfortable loudness levels or M-levels from patients’ clinical maps. <b><i>Results:</i></b> A linear, mixed-effects, repeated-measures analysis revealed significant differences (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.01) between eSRTs measured as a function of the stimulation mode. No significant differences (<i>p</i> = 0.059) were measured between 15-electrode eSRTs and M-levels from patients’ clinical maps. The eSRTs measured for 1- and 4-electrode stimulation differed significantly (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.05) from the M-levels on the corresponding electrodes from the patients’ clinical map. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> eSRT profiles based on 1- or 4-electrode stimulation can be used to determine comfortable loudness level on either individual or a subset of electrodes, and 15-electrode eSRT profiles can be used to determine the upper bound of electrical stimulation that can be used in a speech coding strategy.

Experimental studies have shown that astrocytes participate in epilepsy through inducing the release of glutamate. Meanwhile, considering the disinhibition circuit among inhibitory neuronal populations with different time scales and the feedforward inhibition connection from thalamic relay nucleus to cortical inhibitory neuronal population, here, we propose a modified thalamocortical field model to systematically investigate the mechanism of epilepsy. Firstly, our results show that rich firing activities can be induced by astrocyte dysfunction, including high or low saturated state, high- or low-frequency clonic, spike-wave discharge (SWD), and tonic. More importantly, with the enhancement of feedforward inhibition connection, SWD and tonic oscillations will disappear. In other words, all these pathological waveforms can be suppressed or eliminated. Then, we explore the control effects after different external stimulations applying to thalamic neuronal population. We find that single-pulse stimulation can not only suppress but also induce pathological firing patterns, such as SWD, tonic, and clonic oscillations. And we further verify that deep brain stimulation can control absence epilepsy by regulating the amplitude and pulse width of stimulation. In addition, based on our modified model, 3 : 2 coordinated reset stimulation strategies with different intensities are compared and a more effective and safer stimulation mode is proposed. Our conclusions are expected to give more theoretical insights into the treatment of epilepsy.
