Knowledge of survival rates and their potential covariation with environmental drivers, for both adults and juveniles, is paramount to forecast the population dynamics of long-lived animals. Long-lived bird and mammal populations are indeed very sensitive to change in survival rates, especially that of adults. Here we report the first survival estimates for the Icelandic gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) obtained by capture-mark-recapture methods. We use a mark-recapture-recovery model combining live and dead encounters into a unified analysis, in a Bayesian framework. Annual survival was estimated at 0.83 for adults and 0.40 for juveniles. Positive effects of main prey density on juvenile survival (5% increase in survival from min to max density) were possible though not likely. Weather effects on juvenile survival were even less likely. The variability in observed lifespan suggests that adult birds could suffer from human-induced alteration of survival rates.

Within mental health services, the recovery model has been a guiding philosophy over the past decades. This model stresses ‘person-centred care’ and focuses on assisting service users to live a meaningful and hopeful life even if their illness has not been cured. As part of the recovery orientation, ‘peer workers’ (PWs), i.e. people with lived experiences of mental illness, are increasingly employed within mental health services. In this article, the authors explore how these changes open up frontiers and set in motion boundary work and identity discussions among healthcare professionals. Empirically, the article draws on qualitative data – interviews with healthcare professionals and observations of meetings – collected in mental healthcare services in Denmark. Theoretically, the article combines literature on professional boundary work with theories on ‘self-casting’, ‘alter-casting’ and ‘othering’. Analysing two sets of demarcations – those between healthcare professionals and PWs, and those between professionals and patients – the study shows how the recovery model leads to defensive boundary work as well as an opening up of boundaries.

The endothelial glycocalyx (GCX) plays a key role in the development of organ failure following sepsis. Researchers have investigated GCX degradation caused by pathological conditions. Nonetheless, the GCX restoration process remains poorly understood. Herein, we developed a model in which GCX restoration could be reproduced in mice using in vivo imaging and a dorsal skinfold chamber (DSC). The severity of sepsis was controlled by adjusting the dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) used to trigger GCX degradation in BALB/c mice. We evaluated the GCX thickness, leukocyte-endothelial interactions, and vascular permeability using in vivo imaging through DSC under intravital microscopy. The plasma concentration of syndecan-1(Sdc-1), a GCX structural component, was also determined as a marker of GCX degradation. Thus, we developed a reproducible spontaneous GCX recovery model in mice. Degraded GCX was restored within 24 h by the direct visualization of the endothelial GCX thickness, and leukocyte-endothelial interactions. In contrast, indirectly related indicators of recovery from sepsis, such as body weight and blood pressure, required a longer recovery time. This model can be used to study intractable angiopathy following sepsis.
