Abstract The relativistic electrons rotate in the enhanced magnetic field of the supernova remnants and emit the synchrotron radio emission. We aim to use the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) to obtain a sensitive continuum map of the SNR VRO 42.05.01 (G166.0+4.3) at 1240 MHz. The 500 MHz bandwidth is divided into low and high-frequency bands centered at 1085 and 1383 MHz to investigate the spectral index variations within the remnant, together with the Effelsberg 2695 MHz data. We obtained an integrated flux density of 6.2±0.4 Jy at 1240 MHz for VRO 42.05.01, consistent with previous results. The spectral index found from TT-plot between 1240 and 2695 MHz agrees with previous values from 408 MHz up to 5 GHz. The three-band spectral index distribution shows a clear flatter value of α ∼ −0.33 in the shell region and steeper index of α = −0.36 − −0.54 in the wing region. The flatter spectral index in the shell region could be attributed to a second-order Fermi process in the turbulent medium in the vicinity of the shock and/or a higher compression ratio of shock and a high post-shock density than that in elsewhere.

In order to solve the problem that the existing living cell microscopy technology can not display the detailed information of cells, a high sensitivity digital holographic living cell microscopy technology is proposed in this paper. By measuring the phase distribution and refractive index distribution of living cells, the data of living cells are extracted and converted into digital hologram of living cells. Simulation and comparison of the commonly used two-dimensional living cell microscope methods. The experimental results show that the high-sensitivity digital holographic microscopic detection method can obtain the detailed information of living cells, which proves the effectiveness of this study.

AbstractSingle-cell phase-contrast tomography promises to become decisive for studying 3D intracellular structures in biology. It involves probing cells with light at wide angles, which unfortunately requires complex systems. Here we show an intriguing concept based on an inherent natural process for plants biology, i.e., dehydration, allowing us to easily obtain 3D-tomography of onion-epidermal cells’ nuclei. In fact, the loss of water reduces the turgor pressure and we recognize it induces significant rotation of cells’ nuclei. Thanks to the holographic focusing flexibility and an ad-hoc angles’ tracking algorithm, we combine different phase-contrast views of the nuclei to retrieve their 3D refractive index distribution. Nucleolus identification capability and a strategy for measuring morphology, dry mass, biovolume, and refractive index statistics are reported and discussed. This new concept could revolutionize the investigation in plant biology by enabling dynamic 3D quantitative and label-free analysis at sub-nuclear level using a conventional holographic setup.

Mode-order converters drive the on-chip applications of multimode silicon photonics. Here, we propose a TM0-to-TM3 mode-order converter by leveraging a shallowly etched slot metasurface pattern atop the silicon waveguide, rather than as some previously reported TE-polarized ones. With a shallowly etched pattern on the silicon waveguide, the whole waveguide refractive index distribution and the corresponding field evolution will be changed. Through further analyses, we have found the required slot metasurface pattern for generating the TM3 mode with high conversion efficiency of 92.9% and low modal crosstalk <−19 dB in a length of 17.73 μm. Moreover, the device’s working bandwidth and the fabrication tolerance of the key structural parameters are analyzed in detail. With these features, such devices would be beneficial for the on-chip multimode applications such as mode-division multiplexing transmission.
