Abstract The counter-current jet (CCJ) acts like a reverse surface jet layer covering the free jump surface and has potential applications in the energy dissipation of hydraulic engineering. The present study investigated the hydraulic characteristics of CCJs on adverse-sloped beds. The results showed that, compared to the horizontal bed, the slope didn't increase the energy dissipation rate of CCJ but reduced the return flow length and upstream depth. The velocity distribution along the depth was divided into the boundary layer region, mixing region, and reverse surface jet region. The velocity distribution in the boundary layer region and the mixing region was similar to the classical wall jet. The jet Froude number and the bed slope had no significant effect on the turbulence intensity distribution and turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) distribution of CCJ. The distribution of TKE was similar to that of a submerged jump. The maximum absolute turbulence intensity appeared at exactly half of the maximum velocity. The maximum TKE appeared at the mixing region. Besides, empirical formulas for estimating length scales and maximum velocity attenuation are proposed. The results could provide a reference for the potential application of CCJ in energy dissipation in hydraulic engineering.

We analyse the effect of applied magnetic field on the flow of compressible fluid with an adverse pressure gradient. The governing partial differential equations are solved analytically by Homotopy analysis method (HAM) and numerically by finite difference method. A detailed analysis is carried out for different values of the magnetic parameter, where suction/ injection is imposed at the wall. It is also observed that flow separation is seen in boundary layer region for large injection. HAM is a series solution which consists of a convergence parameter h which is estimated numerically by plotting <em>h</em> curve. Singularities of the solution are identified by Pade approximation.

The flow of nanofluid over a curved Riga surface is a topic of interest in the field of fluid dynamics. A literature survey revealed that the impacts of freezing temperature and the diameter of nanoparticles on the heat transfer over a curved Riga surface have not been examined so far. Therefore, the flow of nanoparticles, which comprises the influences of freezing temperature and nanoparticle diameter in the energy equation, was modeled over a curved Riga surface. The model was reduced successfully in the nondimensional version by implementing the feasible similarity transformations and effective models of nanofluids. The coupled nonlinear model was then examined numerically and highlighted the impacts of various flow quantities in the flow regimes and heat transfer, with graphical aid. It was examined that nanofluid velocity dropped by increasing the flow parameters γ and S, and an abrupt decrement occurred at the surface of the Riga sheet. The boundary layer region enhances for larger γ. The temperature distribution was enhanced for a more magnetized nanofluid, and the thermal boundary layer increased with a larger R parameter. The volume fraction of the nanoparticles favors the effective density and dynamic viscosity of the nanofluids. A maximum amount of heat transfer at the surface was observed for a more magnetized nanofluid.

The objective of this paper was to study the transport and deposition of non-spherical oblate and prolate shaped particles for the flow in a tube with a radial suction velocity field, with an application to experiments related to composite manufacturing. The transport of the non- spherical particles is governed by a convective diffusion equation for the probability density function, also called the Fokker–Planck equation, which is a function of the position and orientation angles. The flow is governed by the Stokes equation with an additional radial flow field. The concentration of particles is assumed to be dilute. In the solution of the Fokker–Planck equation, an expansion for small rotational Peclet numbers and large translational Peclet numbers is considered. The solution can be divided into an outer region and two boundary layer regions. The outer boundary layer region is governed by an angle-averaged convective-diffusion equation. The solution in the innermost boundary layer region is a diffusion equation including the radial variation and the orientation angles. Analytical deposition rates are calculated as a function of position along the tube axis. The contribution from the innermost boundary layer called steric- interception deposition is found to be very small. Higher order curvature and suction effects are found to increase deposition. The results are compared with results using a Lagrangian tracking method of the same flow configuration. When compared, the deposition rates are of the same order of magnitude, but the analytical results show a larger variation for different particle sizes. The results are also compared with numerical results, using the angle averaged convective-diffusion equation. The agreement between numerical and analytical results is good.

Purpose In recent years, nanofluids are being widely used in many thermal systems because of their higher thermal conductivity and heat transfer rate. The higher thermal conductivity depends on many parameters such as size, shape and volume and the Brownian motion and thermophoresis of added nanoparticles. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence of the Brownian motion and thermophoresis on natural convection heat and mass transfer boundary layer flow of nanofluids over a vertical cone with radiation. Design/methodology/approach Using similarity variables, the non-linear partial differential equations, which represent momentum, energy and diffusion, are transformed into ordinary differential equations. The transformed conservation equations are solved numerically subject to the boundary conditions by using versatile, extensively validated, variational finite-element method. Findings The sway of significant parameters such as magnetic field (M), buoyancy ratio parameter (Nr), Brownian motion parameter (Nb), thermophoresis parameter (Nt), thermal radiation (R), Lewis number (Le) and chemical reaction parameter (Cr) on velocity, temperature and concentration evaluation in the boundary layer region is examined in detail. The results are compared with previously published work and are found to be in agreement. The velocity distributions are reduced, while temperature and concentration profiles elevate with a higher (M). With the improving values of (R), the velocity and temperature sketches improve, while concentration distributions are lowered in the boundary layer region. The temperature and concentration profiles are elevated in the boundary layer region for higher values of (Nt). With the increasing values of (Nb), temperature profiles are enhanced, whereas concentration profiles get depreciated in the flow region. Social implications In recent years, it has been found that magneto-nanofluids are significant in many areas of science and technology. It has applications in optical modulators, magnetooptical wavelength filters, tunable optical fiber filters and optical switches. Magnetic nanoparticles are especially useful in biomedicine, sink float separation, cancer therapy, etc. Specific biomedical applications involving nanofluids include hyperthermia, magnetic cell separation, drug delivery and contrast enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no studies have assessed the impact of the two slip effects, namely, Brownian motion and thermophoresis, on the natural convection of electrically conducted heat and mass transfer to the nanofluid boundary layer flow over a vertical cone in the presence of radiation and chemical reaction; therefore, this problem has been addressed in this study. Comparison of the results of this study’s with those of previously published work was found to be in good agreement.
