The author discusses the modern research tools in various domains of science and industry based on integrated assessment of scientometric indicators and patent analysis. Excerpts of microbiological research papers published in Russia and worldwide are included. The data on researchers’ inventive work and publication activities are cited. The possibility for using patent landscapes in assessing research and industrial domains is examined. The author argues that building patent landscapes is a quality tool to identify the most promising vectors of development. He demonstrates that the most research and development activities are concentrated in the countries with the largest numbers of patent applications. In Russia, the government-funded organizations make the key driving force in the scientific studies and technologies in the national microbiology. In analyzing vast data volumes, patent landscapes enable to improve the quality of analysis visualization and get reliable data on the subject of research owing to multidimensional analytical representations. The author insists that building patent landscape services might become one of science libraries’ key functions.

Introduction. The growing interest and huge prospects for the development of blockchain technology have in dicated a high relevance of research on this ecosystem.Problem Statement. The priority development of patent analysis technologies is a result of rapid changes in the digital environment. In this regard, information support of the problems of innovative development of digital so ciety, which includes the formation of a patent monitoring system for the development of individual technological areas, in particular, blockchain.Purpose. The purpose of this research is to assess the problems of building a patent landscape for determining innovative attractiveness and identifying the development trends of blockchain technology.Materials and Methods. The study has been conducted with the use of international patent resource PATENTSCOPE. The citation of inventions of blockchain technology has been analyzed based on the Derwent database on the Web of Science platform.Results. The problems related to the creation of a patent landscape have been assessed; the modern development indicators and the world trends in the blockchain technology have been analyzed; the features of its development in leading economies and corporations of the world have been identified. The patent activity of firms in the world leading countries at the international and national level has been assessed. The blockchain technological segments have been positioned, with transactions and blockchain platforms found the most attractive ones. The inventions with the greatest number of references, which testifies to their innovative attractiveness have been identified.Conclusions. Patent analytics is a very powerful tool for assessing technological trends by building patent landscapes and monitoring them. Knowledge of the problems related to the study and the construction of patent landscape allows obtaining objective results and correctly interpreting the development trends of the R&D field under review.

The present review encompasses a patent landscape on bacteriophage as an antimicrobial agent and one of the alternatives to combat antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This study gives a perspective on use of bacteriophages in various industries such as healthcare, food safety and animal and plant protection. Patenting activity was noted for all the antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens listed in the ‘critical’ category by the WHO. Broadly, claims of the analyzed patents were directed toward bacteriophage, composition/formulation containing phage, phage proteins and various methods of using or producing phage. The challenges to approval of phage therapy in clinical use may be overcome with the help of focused research and modification of the regulatory guidelines for phage therapy.

Abstract BackgroundChinese Classical Formulas (經典名方, CCFs) are clinically employed formulas that have been documented in the literature since before the Ming era. In 2010, China began focusing on the development and product transformation of CCFs and issued a list of 100 CCFs as a reference. Patents are key components of the process for transferring technology to product; however, they are rarely employed in current CCF research. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the current situation of CCFs based on the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and provide a reference for researchers, investors, and policymakers to make relevant decisions. MethodsInformation on CCF publication numbers was obtained from the CNIPA, and data for patent applications made before June 30, 2021, on inventors, titles, and abstracts were searched in the patent database, Derwent Innovation. Duplicate application numbers were removed, applications were standardized, and inventors were categorized. The processed data were then used for subsequent analyses. ResultsA total of 287 patents were included in this analysis, and 61 CCFs were patented. Two major policies regarding CCFs in 2011 and 2019 greatly stimulated related patent applications, but lacked sustainability, followed by a relatively large decline in 2012 and 2020. Among the granted patents, 42.59% are analytical methods-related inventions and 24.07% for preparation methods. The percentage of core patents on substance basis and mechanism of action is relatively small. ConclusionPolicies have a significant impact on CCF R&D. The number of CCF patent applications is increasing every year and there is an increasing number of companies as patent applicants, which indicates that CCF is considered to have a good market potential. However, the lack of high quality patents may create difficulties for future development and this will be an important issue to be addressed. Keywords Chinese classical formulations, Chinese medicine, patent, product transformation
