EditorialRecently, Prof. Jianhua Jiang from Soochow University of China accepted an interview from Light: Science & Applications. Prof. Jiang works on topological photonics, topological phononics, and nonequilibrium physics. On this issue, he discusses the challenges and opportunities in topological photonics, topological phononics, and other topological synthetic systems. He also shares his experiences in cutting-edge research, the education of graduate students, and other challenges faced by junior researchers. Finally, he gives remarks and suggestions for Light: Science & Applications. Light People is a featured column of high-end interviews with outstanding scientists. It is our great honor to invite Prof. Jianhua Jiang, an outstanding young scientist, to showcase his research life and the story behind his success.

The article is devoted to the problem of application of digital services in scientific and pedagogical researches. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the importance and necessity of using digital services in scientific and pedagogical research. Research methods applied: theoretical (analysis of scientific and pedagogical sources, online services and platforms, generalization of results); empirical (presentation and generalization of pedagogical experience). The article analyzes the role of digital services in the development of science. It was found out that the sphere of informatization and digitalization is determined by the normative-legal base of Ukraine, which regulates its implementation. It should be noted that in recent years a number of bills, laws of Ukraine in the field of informatization and digitalization have been developed: The study substantiates the feasibility of studying the course «Digital Services in Research» by applicants of the third educational level, which is implemented at the Kharkiv National Pedagogical University named after GS Skovoroda. The importance and necessity of formation of digital literacy and information-digital competence of the citizens of Ukraine, as well as of the applicants of the third educational level are clarified. The importance of studying the discipline, the role and possibilities of using digital services in modern scientific research are substantiated. It is determined that the use of modern digital services is especially important in scientific activities, as scientific and pedagogical research uses scientific and metric databases and other relevant sources of information in academic / professional fields, and a young scientist must be able to determine the level of objectivity, factual basis in different types of sources, to assess its reliability and representativeness. The article presents the content of the discipline and the main aspects of its study. Among them are: creation of a scientific profile at Google Academy, creation of Google − questionnaires for surveying applicants of different levels, use of open electronic resources, Internet resources, scientific-metric databases, specialized information databases and information retrieval tools for scientific publications and regulations in the field scientific research. Prospects for further research are outlined, which are to conduct a study to determine the digital literacy of applicants at all levels of higher education.

The 13th International Scientific Conference of Civil and Environmental Engineering for the PhD. students and young scientists below 35 years - Young Scientists 2021 (YS21) under auspices of - assoc. prof. Peter Mésároš, the dean of the Civil Engineering Faculty of the Technical University of Košice, - Ing. Andrej Doležal, the Minister of Transport and Construction of the Slovak Republic, - Mgr. Branislav Gröhling, the Minister of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, and - Ján Budaj, the Minister of Environment of the Slovak Republic, was held in Štrbské Pleso, the High Tatras, Slovakia on 13th - 15th October 2021. The traditional meeting of PhD. students, their supervisors and young scientists working in the field of civil and environmental engineering was organised by the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Technical University of Košice, Slovakia. The Young Scientist 2021 offered an international platform for the dissemination of the original research results. It provides a pleasant environment to present a new, great ideas of young researchers and discovered advances in the field of civil and environmental engineering and related interdisciplinary topics. The conference provided an opportunity for PhD. students and young researchers to discussed scientific topics and research results, to share their knowledge and experiences, to collaborate in innovative designs and proposals. The VIII-th International Young Scientists Conference on Information Technologies, Telecommunications and Control Systems (ITTCS) will be held from 16th to 17th of December, 2021, at the Innopolis University. The Conference agenda will work as a competence platform, providing facilities for efficient communication to boost the IT science and engineering knowledge of young scientists and help them in their professional development. Young scientists will be given a unique chance not only to improve their presentation skills and public speaking abilities but to gain an experience of scientific publication. The importance of the project lies in the need to create conditions for the growth of recognition of a young scientist in world scientific circles and an increase in interest in his work, an increase in the level of scientific publications of students, postgraduate students and young scientists, and an increase in their quality. The exchange of experience in the field of professional interests with colleagues from foreign and Russian universities and scientific organizations will improve the qualifications of researchers and establish promising scientific contacts among young scientists. List of Programm Committee, General Chair are available in this pdf.

To cultivate STEM interest amongst high school students, a STEM carnival organized by PPST, UMS was conducted through Junior Innovator Competition (JIC) and Young Scientist Sci-Show Competition (YSSC). The competitions were participated by high school students from Sabah, Sarawak, and F.T Labuan. JIC requires a poster presentation for prototype innovation while YSSC requires a short video presentation about science knowledge learned in the school syllabus. The objective was to gauge JIC and YSSC effectiveness in students’ interest in STEM. A three-star rating Malaysia Research Assessment Instrument (MyRA) questionnaire resulted in 80% total feedback (Q1-Q6), as a principal in MyRA. The result indicated knowledge, attitude, skills, and aspiration (KASA) transformation amongst the students. Three main aspects were summarized from Q1-Q6: learning (Q1 & Q2), interpersonal skill (Q3 & Q4), and STEM interest (Q5 & Q6). Around 82% of students agreed that JIC and YSSC were able to increase their knowledge, interpersonal skills around 81%, as well as 84 - 88% in critical thinking. While 83.7% - 85.3% of students satisfactorily increased their STEM interest and 85% were willing to participate in future competitions. Interestingly, some ex-participants entered the PPST for Foundation in Science. Indeed, competitions such as JIC and YSSC have demonstrated an inclining STEM interest effect toward high school students.
