Abstract The unavoidable impact of roads on arboreal fauna in protected areas has received little attention. We investigated this impact on two gibbon species in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand: two groups had home ranges traversed by roads (roadside groups) and another two lived nearby roads (interior groups). Roads partially delineated the edges of home ranges of roadside groups, and gibbons crossed them only at a few locations. Gibbons’ space use decreased near roads for roadside groups and showed road reluctance as their crossing rates were smaller than those produced by a null movement model. Generalised linear models (GLMs) indicated that a long canopy gap reduced gibbons’ crossing probability, whereas forest cover had a positive effect. A large part of the road network had a low probability of being crossed by gibbons according to GLMs, especially at areas around park headquarters. Roads were still relatively permeable to gibbon movement with a mean 35% crossing probability. The relatively short and narrow road network in the park constitutes a positive assessment of the standards of how roads should be built in protected areas. Nonetheless, this assessment might be the consequence of the park being set in a mountainous region with difficulties of road development.

Increasing accuracy of the model prediction on business bankruptcy helps reduce substantial losses for owners, creditors, investors and workers, and, further, minimize an economic and social problem frequently. In this study, we propose a stochastic model of financial working capital and cashflow as a two-dimensional Brownian motion X(t) = (X1(t),X2(t)) on the business bankruptcy prediction. The probability of bankruptcy occurring in a time interval [0,T] is defined by the boundary crossing probability of the two-dimensional Brownian motion entering a predetermined threshold domain. Mathematically, we extend the result in Fu and Wu (2016) on the boundary crossing probability of a high dimensional Brownian motion to an unbounded convex hull. The proposed model is applied to a real data set of companies in US and the numerical results show the proposed method performs well.

Abstract A crossing probability for the critical four-state Potts model on an $L\times M$ rectangle on a square lattice is numerically studied. The crossing probability here denotes the probability that spin clusters cross from one side of the boundary to the other. First, by employing a Monte Carlo method, we calculate the fractal dimension of a spin cluster interface with a fluctuating boundary condition. By comparison of the fractal dimension with that of the Schramm–Loewner evolution (SLE), we numerically confirm that the interface can be described by the SLE with $\kappa=4$, as predicted in the scaling limit. Then, we compute the crossing probability of this spin cluster interface for various system sizes and aspect ratios. Furthermore, comparing with the analytical results for the scaling limit, which have been previously obtained by a combination of the SLE and conformal field theory, we numerically find that the crossing probability exhibits a logarithmic correction ${\sim} 1/\log(L M)$ to the finite-size scaling.

Information of legitimacy of oil palm progenies is important to guaranty the quality and to control commercial seeds procedures. A true and legitimate cross will produce progeny which has a combination of their parent's allele. The information could be obtained early in the nursery stage through DNA fingerprinting analysis. Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) is one of DNA markers used for DNA fingerprinting, since the marker system has advantages to acquire information of allele per individual in population and efficiency diverse allele of progeny and their parents. The aim of the research is to obtain legitimacy of 12 progenies analyzing in the oil palm nursery stage. Thirteen SSR markers were used to analyze 12 crossings number of oil palm. The genotypes data by alleles of SSR inferred and quantified using Gene Marker® Software version 2.4.0 Soft Genetics® LLC and analyzed based on Mendel's Law of Segregation. The result showed based on heredity pattern of progeny and their parent's allele that progenies H were indicated genetically derived from their known parents while progenies from A and G indicated as illegitimate crossing. Probability value for legitimacy of progenies of 9 other crosses has 0.031 and 0.5. Legitimacy analysis of progeny using SSR markers could be used to control the quality of crossing material and earlier selection in the oil palm nursery.
