There is variation in fixed prosthodontics practice and many studies have concluded that clinicians definitely deviate from the recommended clinical protocols. If this happens during treatment with fixed prosthesis, the quality of fixed prostheses is compromised which affects it’s long term survival. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the use of impression materials and techniques in fixed prosthodontics among Nepalese dentists and to compare the findings on the basis of educational level and years of experience. A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based online survey was done amongst the Nepalese Dentists through google forms. Data from the completed questionnaires were analysed using the SPSS version 16. All statistical analyses were carried out at a significance level of P < 0.05. Out of 129 participants, 68 (52.7%) dentists often made diagnostic impression for fabrication of study cast. 85(65.9%) dentists used Addition silicone, 11(8.5%) used Condensation silicone and 33(25.6%) used Alginate for final impression making. Most commonly used elastomeric impression technique was Putty Wash single stage (56.2%), 40.7% used Putty Wash two stage, 3.1% used Single mix (Monophase) technique. Regarding retraction cord, 63.5% of dentists used Plain gingival retraction cord and 35.7% of dentists used Chemical impregnated retraction cord. Conclusion: The study found that most of the responses on use of impression materials and techniques were significantly associated with the level of education and clinical experience.

Digitization has slowly become the new conventional technique today offering multiple advantages, its application in the field of implantology and fixed prosthodontics has been time tested, and its gradually being utilized in removable prosthodontics also. Digitization allows digital surveying, designing the framework with components, and obtaining a 3D printed resin framework, which can be tried intraorally and cast using conventional techniques. This technology is time-saving, highly accurate, also allows digital archiving of casts. This case report presents rehabilitation of a partially edentulous mandibular arch opposing completely edentulous maxillary arch using digital technology and casting using conventional technique.

Abstract Objective The purpose of this article was to analyze the effect of an instructional video on practical tutorial and to ascertain whether an instructional video improves students’ performance on practical performance and reduces the stress associated with learning. Materials and Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted on a group of 78 first-year students. A pretest was conducted by administering questionnaires to evaluate the interest in the use of videos as well as the level of stress. Students were randomly assigned into two groups: control and test. Students assigned to the control group received conventional teaching, while the experimental group received both conventional teaching and watched a video. Thereafter, a satisfaction questionnaire was distributed to each of the groups, and they were awarded a grade. Results A total of 98.7% of students wished to learn fixed prosthodontics through instructional videos, as they believed that the videos could reduce their worry and stress levels. At the end of the first tutorial, the total grade was significantly lower for the test group (p = 0.003). However, the subjective value of stress was significantly lower in the test group (p = 0.0007) as well as the subjective value of tutorial difficulty (p = 0.0004). Students felt that they better understood the objectives of the tutorial “thanks to the video” (p = 0.0001). Conclusion This study did not reveal any improvement in terms of performance when an instructional video was used for tutorials in comparison with the conventional teaching method. However, the results show a reduction in the level of stress.

Evidence based periodontics has made us understand that most of the patients having various dental or medical treatment requirements require multidisciplinary approach rather than personalised periodontal approach. Periodontal disease may be evident in the periodontal tissue but its onset and progression could be affected by systemic condition also. The intercommunication and liaison between periodontics and endodontics, fixed prosthodontics, implant dentistry, Orthodontics, oral pathology, Aesthetic dentistry, oral & maxillofacial surgery, Paediatric dentistry, gerodontology, radiology, special needs dentistry and general medicine needs to be discussed . Increasing life expectancy, higher quality of Biomaterials used in dentistry and rapid evolution of clinical procedures has led to more demanding patient requests & more complicated treatment choices. It requires holistic management. In this chapter we have made a conscious effort to touch upon various fields of medical science and its relation to periodontics, by which we wish to create a healthy referral protocol, benefiting the general population.

This study is aimed to provide an insight into the types of treatment carried out by postgraduate students in the past 10 years. A retrospective study was carried out between November 2019 and February 2020 by deriving data from postgraduate students’ clinical logbooks of three different cohorts of Master of Clinical Dentistry (Restorative Dentistry in Conservative Dentistry) in 2010, 2013 and 2016. This retrospective data was systematically extracted from the records and tabulated categorically using an Excel spreadsheet (Microsoft Office Excel 2019). A descriptive analysis was carried out to further evaluate the results. Overall, the types of treatment carried out in the field of endodontics and fixed prosthodontics has changed in the past 10 years. An increasing trend is seen in the placement of all ceramic crowns and primary root canal treatment procedures, while a decreasing pattern is evident for secondary root canal procedures and placement of dental bridges.

Fixed prosthodontics is a zestful and progressing branch because of the numerous advantages that it has over removable prosthesis. The oral cavity for each scenario has its own complications and hence every individual case has its own approach keeping in mind the comfort, function, and aesthetics of the patient. In some cases, we come across an edentulous space on both the sides, creating a lone free-standing tooth. This clinical scenario with a pier abutment needs to be taken into consideration during restoration of the arch as the masticatory forces applied on the abutment teeth at one end of fixed partial denture (FPD) can result in the pier abutment acting as a fulcrum resulting in ultimate failure of the FPD and trauma to the periodontium. To overcome this complication, use of non-rigid connectors is advised. Many innovative clinical designs with modifications to the conventional bridges have been proposed over the years to undertake such a scenario most diligently. Selection of the right type of connector is imperative for the success while undertaking such a case. This era is of digital dentistry; hence, an innovative, time saving, and cost-effective way of fabricating non-rigid connector using Exocad software and 3D printing of split pontic FPD is presented in this case report.
