BACKGROUND:Lung cancer is one of the most common cancer and cause of cancer related deaths in about 29% of males and 26% of females all over the world. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy has an excellent result in diagnosis of lung cancer when combined with brushing cytology and biopsy. The Aim of the study is to correlate AIM: cytological and histological ndings in diagnosing lung carcinomas. This study was done in Department of Pathology, Government General MATERIALS AND METHODS: and Chest Hospital, Erragada, Hyderabad, Telangana from June 2018 to May 2020. 240 clinically suspected cases of lung malignancies underwent both bronchial brush and bronchial biopsy and were included in this study.RESULTS: Out of 240 cases, malignancy was conrmed in 194 cases by histopathology of bronchial biopsy, in which 152 cases were well correlated with brush cytology. Bronchial brush cytology showed sensitivity of 78.35% , specicity of 100% and accuracy of 82.5%. Bronchial biopsy has better detection rate t CONCLUSION han bronchial brush cytology in this study. However combination of brush cytology and biopsy can be considered as the best procedures for the diagnosis of lung malignancies.

Objective False positive and negative results are associated with biliary tract cell brushing cytology during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The causes are uncertain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of diagnoses made via cell brushing in our center, and to explore the factors influencing diagnosis. Methods The clinical data of patients who underwent cell brushing at our center from January 2016 to August 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. These included age, gender, stricture location, thickness of the bile duct wall in the narrow segment, maximum diameter of the biliary duct above the stricture, number of cell brush smears, carbohydrate antigen 19-9, and carcinoembryonic antigen. Positive brush cytology results were compared with results of surgical histology or tumor biopsy as well as with the patient’s clinical course. Results Of the 48 patients who underwent cell brushing cytology, 27 (56.3%) had positive results. The sensitivity and specificity of biliary duct cell brushing was 79.4%, and 85.7%, respectively. None of the above-mentioned factors were associated with positive cytology brushing results. Conclusions Cell brushing cytology remains a reliable method for diagnosis of pancreaticobiliary malignancies.

Background: In 1960’s, flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope, was first used to give a better yield to diagnose pulmonary diseases. Bronchial brushing cytology (BBC) and Broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) are two important adjuncts done along with bronchoscopic biopsy. Bronchial brushings yield better diagnostic material than simple exfoliative cytology. Therefore, both techniques are of much diagnostic value and is widely accepted as it is safe, economical and evaluation requires much less time. Methods: All the bronchial brush and bronchoalveolar lavage smears obtained from January 2018 to December 2018 were assessed. Correlation was done with histopathology wherever was available. Result: BBC showed a sensitivity and specificity of   59.28% and 100%. The positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 100% and 47.62%. BAL showed a sensitivity and specificity of 51% and 100%. The positive predictive value and negative predictive value was 100% and 43.18%. The diagnostic accuracy of BBC and BAL were 70.27% and 64.86%. Conclusion: Universally bronchial washings and bronchial brushings should be considered important adjunct to bronchoscopic biopsies to diagnose pulmonary lesions as both are safe, economical and can will give better diagnostic yield if incorporated together.
