Abstract There has never been a greater need for reliable, truthful news to help citizens navigate and assess the veracity of what they are reading and viewing, especially on social media. Widespread concerns around ‘fake’ news demonstrate an enduring requirement for curated and trustworthy children’s news that addresses children as young citizens with certain rights. Drawing on recent UK events, we discuss the case for children’s news provision by public service broadcasting (PSB) from a communication rights perspective by analyzing the BBC’s 2019 plans to reduce the broadcast presence and originated hours of its flagship news service, Newsround, in favor of online distribution.

Canadian University Press (CUP) is a co-operative national student news group that produces a news service and unites student newspapers across the country. Since its establishment in 1938, CUP has brought campus newspapers from across the country together to share news and information as well as training with one another. From 1965 to 1991 CUP's policies stated that the major role of the student newspaper was to "act as an agent of social change." During this time CUP and its members took on an educative and active political role. Using CUP as a case study of a politically engaged press organization that saw its role as an active participant in the events it reported, this thesis illuminates the factors that can encourage a politically engaged press taking into consideration both theory and practice. This study examines the factors that made it possible for CUP to act as an agent of social change, how that role was interpreted, and the changes that resulted in the organization moving away from that role.

The goal of the article is to explore some linguistic means used in the British monarchical media discourse to describe the life of the Royal family. The research is carried out in the semiotic aspect with the help of contextual and distributive methods of analysis of the extensive language material taken from the authentic sources, such as: the Internet versions of British newspapers, the international news service BBC and the official website of the Windsors. The verbal signs that define the representatives of the British monarchy, their actions, relations, values and anti-values, tangible and intangible resources, quantitative characteristics, are used not only to inform the readers about the events in which the British Royals participate but also to enlarge the world picture of common citizens and to create the image of the contemporary monarchy. The results of the research show that the members of the Royal family are presented as approachable, amiable people, involved in charity, engaged in solving the urgent social issues and doing their best in popularization of monarchy, bringing it up to date. The article also contributes to the theory of discourse as it contains the definition of monarchical discourse and the characteristics of its personal, institutional and media subtypes from the point of view of their participants, the aims of the latter and the situations of communication.
