Researchers have shown that the development of a many-particle system of quantum spins can look surprisingly like the classical process of diffusion.

AbstractWe consider quantum spins with $$S\ge 1$$ S ≥ 1 , and two-body interactions with $$O(2S+1)$$ O ( 2 S + 1 ) symmetry. We discuss the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional system. We give a rigorous proof of dimerization for an open region of the phase diagram, for S sufficiently large. We also prove the existence of a gap for excitations.

AbstractA novel quantum–classical hybrid scheme is proposed to efficiently solve large-scale combinatorial optimization problems. The key concept is to introduce a Hamiltonian dynamics of the classical flux variables associated with the quantum spins of the transverse-field Ising model. Molecular dynamics of the classical fluxes can be used as a powerful preconditioner to sort out the frozen and ambivalent spins for quantum annealers. The performance and accuracy of our smooth hybridization in comparison to the standard classical algorithms (the tabu search and the simulated annealing) are demonstrated by employing the MAX-CUT and Ising spin-glass problems.

AbstractLocal spins coupled to superconductors give rise to several emerging phenomena directly linked to the competition between Cooper pair formation and magnetic exchange. These effects are generally scrutinized using a spectroscopic approach which relies on detecting the in-gap bound modes arising from Cooper pair breaking, the so-called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. However, the impact of local magnetic impurities on the superconducting order parameter remains largely unexplored. Here, we use scanning Josephson spectroscopy to directly visualize the effect of magnetic perturbations on Cooper pair tunneling between superconducting electrodes at the atomic scale. By increasing the magnetic impurity orbital occupation by adding one electron at a time, we reveal the existence of a direct correlation between Josephson supercurrent suppression and YSR states. Moreover, in the metallic regime, we detect zero bias anomalies which break the existing framework based on competing Kondo and Cooper pair singlet formation mechanisms. Based on first-principle calculations, these results are rationalized in terms of unconventional spin-excitations induced by the finite magnetic anisotropy energy. Our findings have far reaching implications for phenomena that rely on the interplay between quantum spins and superconductivity.

We introduce a notion of homogeneous topological order, which is obeyed by most, if not all, known examples of topological order including fracton phases on quantum spins (qudits). The notion is a condition on the ground state subspace, rather than on the Hamiltonian, and demands that given a collection of ball-like regions, any linear transformation on the ground space be realized by an operator that avoids the ball-like regions. We derive a bound on the ground state degeneracy \mathcal D𝒟 for systems with homogeneous topological order on an arbitrary closed Riemannian manifold of dimension dd, which reads [ D c (L/a)^{d-2}.] Here, LL is the diameter of the system, aa is the lattice spacing, and cc is a constant that only depends on the isometry class of the manifold, and \muμ is a constant that only depends on the density of degrees of freedom. If d=2d=2, the constant cc is the (demi)genus of the space manifold. This bound is saturated up to constants by known examples.examples.
