We present an exact two-component (X2C) ansatz for the EPR g-tensor using gauge-including atomic orbitals (GIAOs) and a magnetically balanced basis set expansion. In contrast to previous X2C and "fully" relativistic ansätze for the g-tensor, this implementation results in a gauge-origin invariant formalism. Furthermore, the derivatives of the relativistic decoupling matrix are considered to form the complete analytical derivative of the X2C Hamiltonian. To reduce the associated computational costs, we apply the diagonal local approximation to the unitary decoupling transformation (DLU) and the (multipole-accelerated) resolution of the identity approximation. The X2C ansatz is compared to Douglas-Kroll-Hess theory and the zeroth-order regular approximation for 11 diatomic molecules. The impact of the relativistic Hamiltonian, the basis set, and the density functional approximation is subsequently assessed for a set of 17 transition-metal complexes to complement our previous work on the hyperfine coupling constant [DOI: 10.33774/chemrxiv-2021-wnz1v-v2]. In total, 24 basis sets and 22 density functional approximations are considered. The quasi-relativistic X2C and DLU-X2C Hamiltonians accurately reproduce the results of the parent "fully" relativistic four-component theory when accounting for two-electron picture-change effects with the modified screened nuclear spin-orbit approximation in the respective one-electron integrals and integral derivatives. Generally, the uncontracted Dyall and segmented-contracted Karlsruhe x2c-type basis sets perform well when compared to large even-tempered basis sets. Moreover, (range-separated) hybrid density functional approximations are needed to match the experimental findings. Here, hybrids based on the meta -generalized gradient approximation are not an a priori improvement. Compared to the other computational parameters, the impact of the GIAOs and the magnetic balance on the actual results in standard calculations is less pronounced. Routine calculations of large molecules are possible with widely available and comparably low- cost hardware as demonstrated for [Pt(C6Cl5)4]− with 3360 basis functions and three spin-(1/2) La(II) and Lu(II) compounds. Both approaches based on a common gauge origin and GIAOs using triple- ζ basis sets lead to a good agreement with the experimental findings. The best agreement is found with hybrid functionals such as PBE0 and ωB97X-D.

We report on the reorientation dynamics of small spin probe 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO) in cis-1,4-poly(isoprene) (cis-1,4-PIP10k) from electron spin resonance (ESR) and the free volume of cis-1,4-PIP10k from positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) in relation to the high-frequency relaxations of cis-1,4-PIP10k using light scattering (LS) as well as to the slow and fast processes from broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and neutron scattering (NS). The hyperfine coupling constant, 2Azz′(T), and the correlation times, τc(T), of cis-1,4-PIP10k/TEMPO system as a function of temperature exhibit several regions of the distinct spin probe TEMPO dynamics over a wide temperature range from 100 K up to 350 K. The characteristic ESR temperatures of changes in the spin probe dynamics in cis-1,4-PIP10k/TEMPO system are closely related to the characteristic PALS ones reflecting changes in the free volume expansion from PALS measurement. Finally, the time scales of the slow and fast dynamics of TEMPO in cis-1,4-PIP10k are compared with all of the six known slow and fast relaxation modes from BDS, LS and NS techniques with the aim to discuss the controlling factors of the spin probe reorientation mobility in polymer, oligomer and small molecular organic glass-formers.

AbstractThe purpose of the present work was to study how chemical reactions and the electronic structure of atoms are affected by confinement at the sub-nanometer scale. To reach this goal, we studied the H atom in talc, a layered clay mineral. Talc is a highly 2D-confining material with the width of its interlayer space close to angstrom. We investigated talc with a particle accelerator-based spectroscopic method that uses elementary particles. This technique generates an exotic atom, muonium (Mu), which can be considered as an isotope of the H atom. Moreover, the technique allows us to probe a single atom (H atom) at any time and explore the effects of the layered clay on a single ion (proton) or atom. The cation/electron recombination happens in two time windows: one faster than a nanosecond and the other one at longer than microseconds. This result suggests that two types of electron transfer processes take place in these clay minerals. Calculations demonstrated that the interlayer space acts as a catalytic surface and is the primary location of cation/electron recombination in talc. Moreover, the studies of the temperature dependence of Mu decay rates, due to the formation of the surrogate of H2, is suggestive of an “H2” formation reaction that is thermally activated above 25 K, but governed by quantum diffusion below 25 K. The experimental and computational studies of the hyperfine coupling constant of Mu suggest that it is formed in the interlayer space of talc and that its electronic structure is extremely changed due to confinement. All these results imply that the chemistry could be strongly affected by confinement in the interlayer space of clays.

A computational analysis of the electronic structure, bonding and magnetic properties in the 5f1 U(C7H7)2− complex vs. 3d metallocenes is performed. Notably, it is shown that the proton hyperfine coupling constant in U(C7H7)2− is the same in sign and magnitude to that of the 3d7 cobaltocene, but the two systems do not share a similar covalent metal–ligand bonding.
