Ring nets are modified purse seines used for pelagic fishing along the Kenya coast. This method is however associated with potential negative environmental implications in inshore and shallow fishing grounds. Biological impacts on selected pelagic species caught in the marine waters of Kilifi were investigated during the Southeast Monsoon season (SEM) in April, May and September 2014, and the Northeast Monsoon season (NEM) in October and November 2014, and March 2015. Amblygaster sirm, Rastrelliger brachysoma, Sardinella gibbosa, Rastrelliger kanagurta, Hemiramphus far and Sphyraena obtusata were the most abundant species caught by the ring nets and comprised 68.9 % of fish catch composition. Analysis of ring net impacts on the fish sizes and maturity status were conducted for the NEM and SEM seasons. The catch composition for A. sirm in October comprised of 53.3 % juveniles and 53.4 % juveniles for S. obtusata in November. High percentages of H. far (78.3%) and S. obtusata (58.9 %) were captured in September. Incidences of undersize fish for A. sirm, S. gibbosa, R. kanagurta and R. brachysoma were observed across the seasons. Sex ratios for A. sirm, R. brachysoma, R. kanagurta and S. obtusata in the NEM season deviated from a normal ratio of 1:1 with more males observed. Females were dominant in the catch for H. far (1: 1.28) but the ratio was not different for S. gibbosa (χ² = 5.564, df = 1, p = 0.21). Males were dominant for A. sirm (1: 0.8) and S. gibbosa (1: 0.7) in the SEM season but the ratios were not different for H. far, S. obtusata, R. brachysoma and R. kanagurta. Differences in sex ratios were attributed to fish migrations and reproductive processes. Ring nets fished relatively offshore during the NEM season and targeted mainly spawning aggregations in stage IV. Immature fish in stage I and II which comprised of juveniles were harvested within sheltered inshore waters in the SEM season. Use of ring nets to target juveniles and spawning aggregations may disrupt recruitment processes. To enhance sustainable management of the ring net fishery, there is a need to develop harvesting strategies based on the information on stock status of the target fish.

Groundwater upwellings provide warmer, stable overwinter temperatures for developing salmon embryos, which may be particularly important in cold, braided, gravel-bed sub-Arctic rivers. We used a three-year time series of aerial counts and remote sensing to estimate the distribution of low and high aggregations of spawning fall chum salmon, classify approximately 0.5-km long river segments by geomorphic channel type, and map thermal variability along a 25.4 km stretch of the Teedriinjik River, Alaska. We used a dynamic multistate occupancy model to estimate detectability, occupancy, and the dynamics of spawning aggregations among river segments. Detectability was higher for large (>150) relative to smaller aggregations. Unoccupied segments were likely to remain so from year to year, low abundance spawning segments were dynamic and rarely remained in that state for multiple years, while ~20-35% of high abundance segments remained stable, indicating the presence of high-quality spawning habitat. Spawning habitat use was associated with warmer water temperatures likely caused by groundwater upwellings. We identified spawning habitat characteristics and trends in usage by fall chum salmon, which will inform land management decisions and assist in evaluating impacts of shifting climate conditions and resource management on Arctic salmon populations.

Understanding the anthropogenic impact of oyster farms is essential for the management and conservation of marine fishes. In Japan, Hiroshima Bay is the region with the most intense oyster farming and thus suitable to study the impact of these farms. Here, we surveyed spherical planktonic eggs of the black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii, one of the most abundant fish in the Bay. Our survey was performed at fourteen stations which included places with oyster farms and historical spawning grounds. We found the highest egg densities in four stations, one with historical spawning aggregations and three with major oyster farms. Besides, surveys at the innermost part of Hiroshima Bay, where two major rivers discharge, showed a low density of eggs indicating that black sea bream avoids spawning in low salinity areas. Our study suggests that oyster farms benefit spawners of black sea bream by providing more food sources than historical spawning grounds for efficient spawning. Yet, whether oyster farms represent a full advantage for the species remains unclear, particularly because they are known to host jellyfishes that prey on eggs and limit water flow that can influence the survival of fish eggs.

Management of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) off southern Newfoundland (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Subdivision 3Ps) entails allocated quotas and restrictions on fishing during late winter and springtime to protect presumed spawning aggregations. We present data collected from research trawls and handlines (1995–2014) indicating spawning inshore may occur near year-around with limited resting from December to February and with more contracted spring spawning possible offshore. A mixed general linear model with binomial error, using year as a random factor, recognized month and length as significant impacts on proportions of females spawning, but not gear or inshore–offshore location. Composite data indicated that females in spawning condition may be present inshore (∼10%–20% of adult females) from March to October. During 1997–1999, with 8–9 months sampled each year, protracted annual spawning schedules and interannual variability were evident. At present, the fishery primarily employs gillnets inshore and otter trawls offshore, with spring spawning closures offering only partial and inconsistent protection. Behavioural interference might be reduced by employing less intrusive longlines, as historically practiced in this fishery.

Characterizing the behavior of coral reef fishes at home reef sites can provide insight into the mechanisms of spatial ecology and provide a framework for spatial resource management. In the Caribbean, populations of Nassau grouper Epinephelus striatus have declined due to fishing impacts on spawning aggregations. Despite local and regional efforts by fisheries managers to implement regulations protecting spawning aggregations, few Nassau grouper populations appear to be recovering. In order to improve management strategies for this critically endangered species, it is necessary to understand the spatial ecology of the species across seasons and years. In the Cayman Islands, we used a multi-year, presence/absence, depth-coded acoustic tagging dataset of Nassau grouper to characterize patterns in the species’ behavior and vertical habitat use at home reef sites. Twenty acoustically tagged individuals (56-84 cm, 70.01 ± 7.40 cm; total length, mean ± SD) maintained consistent home reef sites, although some fish regularly shifted activity centers within the home site, often following a seasonal spawning migration. Seven fish with depth-coded tags showed a higher probability of vertical movement in the hours immediately following dawn and preceding dusk. We found evidence of a positive relationship between the fish condition factor and depth of home reef site. The finding of persistent home reef sites across years suggests that properly sized spatial reserves at home reef sites can be a useful complement to spawning aggregation protection when considering management strategies for Nassau grouper.
